TaylorMade P-Series and Hi-Toe 4 Wedges - 2024 Forum Review

Byrnzee's TaylorMade P7CB First Impressions:

Hey all, I wanted to make a post about my first impressions of the new P7CBs. I'm going to keep this fairly high level, as I plan to delve more into the data side of things in future weeks. I've had my irons for exactly a week now, and have been fortunate to be able to play a full round of golf, hit them at a turf driving range, and hit them at the simulator.

IMG_8993.jpeg.f0b7a8315b624fc6c964e0605a9a48dc.jpeg

My very first strike with these beauties was on the driving range at a nearby course in Chicago. I wasn't expecting them to arrive in time to put them into play right away, but they arrived Friday, were unboxed Saturday evening, and put right in the back for a Sunday morning tee time.

Looks:

I think it's hard to argue that these aren't some of the best looking irons in the game right now. Everyone has different things that they like about the clubs that they use, but these stuck out to me immediately. They feel new, yet timeless. Cutting edge, yet classic. I love the nod to the old RAC irons with the raised design in the cavity, as well as the retro TM logo. In comparison to the line they replaced, the P7MCs, they went with a brushed steel coloring as opposed to chrome. I think that was a great choice to reduce glare and I also just think it looks better.

IMG_8992.jpeg.750c955ce9e26bb6e597afbdccc06f7e.jpeg

The top-line view is very clean as well. The top edge is a bit thinner than my Mizunos and also slightly rounded. Right away I could see that the faces of these clubs were smaller than my current gamers. For PW-7 iron, it didn't bother me too much. However, once you get to the 6-4 irons, that smaller face becomes quite intimidating...

As mentioned in a previous post I made in response to a YouTube review of these clubs, there is a bit of an indent in the hosel to leading edge transition. It didn't bother me much while playing, but it's something I made note of after watching that video. I'm sure some players would like to see more of a straighter leading edge transition, but everyone is different and it hasn't affected my personal experience with the clubs in any way at this point.

Feel:

I was incredibly surprised by the feel of these irons. When you're looking down at a thinner top line and a smaller face, it can be hard to feel confident. "Can I possibly hit these irons flush? And more importantly, if I don't, what's that going to feel like?" However, I noticed right away that these irons had a much better feel than I was expecting. I'm sure a big part of that is being fit into the right shaft during my fitting process.

I started on the range with a pitching wedge and then worked my way up to the 4-iron. We didn't have much time before my round, but I hit PW, 8-iron and 4-iron to get a good feel of the different clubs in the set. PW felt great right away - buttery feel off the face, great trajectory, and tight dispersion. 8-iron felt the same, with a really nice ball flight that's slightly higher than my old irons.

I did have some mishits with both the 8-iron and 4-iron and was expecting them to feel much worse than they did. I'm sure many of you can relate with different equipment throughout the years, but an off-center shot can occasionally reverberate throughout your hands, arms and core when you mishit an iron. I didn't find that to be the case at all with these irons. You could easily tell when you mishit one, but it was just a slight deviation from a "good" shot. No pain or discomfort, just a bit harder than the soft center of the clubface on a flush shot.

Forgiveness:

Building off of that comment above about mishits, I was interested to see how these irons might play out on the course. I will start by saying I was battling some bad swing tendencies to start this round. I hadn't been to the range in several days and had too many swing thoughts in my head. My goal for the round was to not worry about score, just focus on getting used to the new irons and seeing how they could navigate me around the track.

By the time we had gotten to the back nine, these irons really started to click for me. The swing was feeling much better and I could fully trust the irons to hit the targets I was aimed at. Even on mis-hits, the irons seemed to fly close to full distance. I would say my miss for the most part was a weak, high-right shot, but these irons still seemed to land close to pin high, if not slightly short. I was incredibly impressed with how well they kept me within my round and gave me very solid chances to recover from mistakes.

IMG_8997.jpeg.c928ae71c7820f25c2e2604bcae46115.jpeg

Had to include a picture of one of my most memorable shots of the day - a perfectly flush 6-iron shot on a long par 3. It was directly into the fan, but this shot came on hole 14 of the day and made me absolutely giddy. There aren't many feelings on a golf course that are better than striking a long-iron well! I'm still slightly intimidated when I pull those 4-6 irons out of the bag, but I was pleasantly surprised when hitting them that they're much more forgiving than they appear.

Conclusion:

If you've made it this far, I appreciate you taking the time to read this post. My first impressions of these irons have been nothing short of spectacular. From the look to the feel to the forgiveness, I have no doubt that these irons will continue to help me play better golf.

Next week I plan to dive into the data. I will be headed to the simulator to compare these irons to my old Mizunos to see how they hold up. I will be doing a head-to-head comparison with some accompanying data tables, charts and graphs (you're welcome, fellow data-nerds).

Thanks for reading and as always, feel free to reach out with any questions, comments or suggestions for how I can improve my testing to appeal to you!

Good to hear about the miss hits not feeling like complete stingers. There's nothing worse then that feeling of brisk morning.

If it’s any consolation, I never got a tracking label and they randomly appeared one day. Maybe today will be that day for you! Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Are they coming from the states or from TM Canada?

Couldn't contain my excitement tonight. Got a bunch of videos made to get a sort of "unboxing" like my fellow testers. Sun is fading fast here so I'm going to get to the range as soon as I can for some better outside shots. Here are a few I snapped this evening. 20241004_205517(1).jpg.330c58bd9b85fb796cca2ef98a6c23fa.jpg
