CARNOUSTIE SPORTSWEAR

Carnoustie is a premium golf apparel brand that has been around for about twenty years.  If you visit any of the upscale, daily-fee courses around the country, you are almost sure to find their offerings inside the proshop.  You're not going to find cutting edge trends or tailored fit profiles.  What you will find is a steady stream of timeless designs that are well constructed out of premium fabrics.

Carnoustie offers a full line of men's sportswear that could very well double as men's business casual wear.  Pumping gas or grabbing a coffee before the round, the onlooker won't be able to distinguish you from a guy heading to the golf course or office.  Which in fact, makes things easier for the Friday afternoon, undercover breakaway.

Like many other golf apparel brands, Carnoustie took some lessons from the ski and outerwear guys with a focus on layering.  Brands that offer a full line of golf apparel almost always have a range of layering options from the base to the last piece to adapt to the weather of the day.  In the past, function was at the sacrifice of fashion.  Today, this is no longer the case, and for 2016, Carnoustie has proven that in their Hogan outerwear collection.

One aspect of the Carnoustie line that is increasingly appealing to me as a husband and father to a daughter, is a corresponding women's line.  Although the woman's selection are not as vast as the menswear, they do a very nice job combining contemporary and elegant in this line.

Gingham Performance Polo (Blue)

The Gingham took the checked button down woven and turned it into a golf shift.  Made from 88% polyester and 12% spandex, it's a lightweight, moisture wicking easy care golf shirt.  The Gingham is sized generously so size down if you are in between sizes.  $88

Hogan Performance Pullover (White)

An essential layering piece for fall golf is the quarter-zip pullover.  The Hogan from Carnoustie is made from 88% polyester and 12% spandex which is a blend well-suited for the movement of the golf swing.  $105

WHET DESIGN

Whet Design was born in 2013 in Miami Beach, Florida.  They set out to build a lifestyle brand designed around materials and fit.   True to the spirit of brands that are billed as “lifestyle,” most Whet Design selections can function just as well off the golf course as they can on the golf course.  At present, they only offer a handful of short-sleeve polo shirt offerings. Their concise portfolio is nicely done accomplishing the difficult task of incorporating traditional as well as modern into the designs.

Their flagship offering, Luxe is at the heart of everything that is a perfect golf shirt.  There are very few brands that get this part correct and is essential when describing yourself as a lifestyle brand.  Blend.  The combination of cotton and technical fabric.  The Luxe from Whet Design in the perfect marriage of pima cotton and polyester.  The result is a cotton-soft feeling shirt with the durability and low maintenance (wrinkle free) properties of a tech fabric.

The fit of any golf apparel piece is probably the single most important design feature.  If it doesn't fit right, it won't look right.  No matter the brand or materials, it has to present well and if not, you might as well donate the item to someone else.  This is where things get a little tricky with Whet Design.

As a 5'11”, 185-pound lad, I usually wear a Large in most brands.  I could probably fit into the size of a medium but the length would be too short.  Whet Design describes themselves as a “tailored fit” cut.  The XL shirt fits like a tailored large or loose fit medium.  For this guy, it's a perfect match almost as if it were designed just for my particular body type.  However, I am not sure how their sizing will work for a variety of body shapes and sizes given their largest size is an XL.

Whet Design's offerings are unique.  The selections would work just as well for a variety of golfers.  Having said that, you would have to get that fit just right and I would like to meet the man that fits into the small.  Walking the strip on Miami Beach or into the pharmacy in The Villages, you can't go wrong with Whet Design.

That Gingham Performance Polo is sweet. $88 is too much for me to drop on a polo but damn, it's slick.
