  1. His putting isn't great lately, so how he putts is of no consequence to me
  2. That is interesting that you bring up height. Watching many tall tour players hit driver it seems that they are able to stand more upright naturally. With the woods being the longest clubs in the bag it would make sense the natural stance is easier for them to hit it. I have a wrist to floor that is about the same as someone who is 6-3 to 6-5, but I am only 5-11. I have always liked the longer clubs from woods, hybrids, and long irons which I can only attribute to feeling more natural at address. 8i length is about my favorite short club. Anything shorter feels too short, and I have to consciously focus on staying down through the shot for 9i-wedges. My irons are 2° up and it still feels a bit manufactured in the short irons. Since the thread is about 3w - I have a gamer that I will bring out of moth balls when I play a course that is exceptionally long. I usually give up a short club like a Gap. My 3w is an Aldilla xstiff SLDR TS at 14° that I might turn down to 13° or from up to 15° depending on my desired flight and wind conditions. I have hit this club 293 yards at most, but usually around 240-250 is my target (5w 220-230). Driver for me is about 260 average with some getting out to 300+ when conditions allow. The tight gapping is why I usually just carry the 5w and D.
  3. I don't game a 3w lately. However, it is for a different reason than not hitting it will. My reason is hitting it too well. The gap from my driver to 3w was only 10-15 yards. I do go Driver - 5w - 4H - 4i... I love my 5w.
  4. When I tried the max I was getting 3300rpm spin. I can only attribute that to the rear COG that the Max has. I am leaning more towards forward COG and/or a stiffer tip shaft than what I have now to lower launch and spin. I'm not an X flex when I look at my averages. But, the few X flex clubs I have do seem to work well with my "best" swings - usually in the faster range. I'm still leaning to the G400 LST, Maltby TC, or even a Taylormade M1/3/5 - probably the M3 due to cost. I can't wrap my head around Srixon, Mizuno, Wilson, or Cobra drivers for whatever mental block I have. Titleist seems to hold value well, so I am not sure which 3-5 year old model is the low spin option? I have a local big box that I can usually find lots of used options in stock to try before I buy... Just trying to narrow down the options. Who knows, I may end up with a std G400 in X flex at 10.5° turned down to 9.5°? I'm open to playing with it to figure it out.
  5. It makes me wonder, if a golfer can't hit a straight putt, or the optimal speed, then would a green book really matter? Or knowing Aimpoint Express? For excellent golfers/putters it makes sense to have the best tools and especially when you are competing. But, the amateur golfer would probably benefit more from less option paralysis and more practice/time playing?
  6. Hey gentlemen, I am a poor golfer (oxymoron). Looking into a new-ish big stick, but can't afford anything much over 2 bills (~$200). I am currently gaming a Callaway XR16 9.0 with a Project X LZ stiff shaft at stated neutral settings. I struggle with consistently finding the center of the face in part due to droop and in part L.O.F.T. (lack of friggin talent). I have hit some bombs over 300+ yards total, but I flare a few out to the right and high more than I would like. My swing speed is close to 100 +/- 8 mph depending on the day. Also, I think I would benefit from less spin overall because I hover in the 2700rpm range +/- 600rpm (you can laugh). I have heard good things about the Maltby KE4 TC and Tour Edge EXS which both seem somewhat affordable new. However, the Ping G400 LST used seems also in my budget. I am planning on a fitting either way to narrow down some specs, so which driver would you like me to check out?
  7. I was in great position off the tee with a 7 iron in hand that did not go well on the par 4. I miss-hit the 7i into the trees right of the green. Gap wedge in hand, trying to keep it under the branches from about 20 yards, I was about 25 feet from the pin and just off the green by about 6 feet. Another person in our group continued to mark his shot by sticking his divot tool vertically in the ground behind his ball. It was right on my line and about 4 feet from the cup. I said, "can you mark it with something flat or finish out?" He replied, in a gripe, "you think you're that good?!? I'll mark it, but you probably won't even come close to my mark or making it!" I thought to myself, 'I can make this!' I still had my Gap in hand. I setup, make good contact, and the ball is on the way... The second bounce hits his coin, hops again, and goes in for par. He then proceeded to say, "I'll keep my mouth shut." - the best part Making par was great. Making a point was even better. The next tee I hit my longest drive ever (315 yards). Confidence does make a difference.
  8. Costco does prints on glass, canvas & metal that I have seen come out very nice.
  9. It would be neat to make it retractable like a movie screen.
  10. I hear you on that. Made me think that they really only talk about what they can sell - kinda their job - so, I don't fault them for it. TXG seems to do the best they can at showing what is available and how it can be optimized, so I really appreciate them for that.
  11. That is a loaded question My experience is that my gaps from club to club do not drastically change with range balls (in good condition). Range balls may not fly as far, but they usually remain relatively consistent from club to club. People who struggle with longer irons not flying much farther than mid irons are usually having a combination of issues from poor impact (off-center), not enough club head speed, poor attack angle (too steep), thin strikes (trying to lift), and fat shots, etc. Hybrids help some golfers with those issues by increasing club head speed (lighter graphite shafts that are longer than irons), oversized face compared irons have larger sweet spots, lower center of gravity helps get the ball airborne more easily (all in theory based on getting fit or finding the right club for you). I wouldn't blame range balls for not being able to carry your 5-6 irons unless you experience no problem with those clubs and your normal game ball???
  12. Love it! Add some flare to your bag. What putter is going in there?
  13. It could be his setup more than the putter? It could be a flinch, take away, or stroke issue? If it is a breaking putt then it could be a misread? The putter is only a tool in the puzzle that is golf.
  14. I know I don't swing the same when it's freezing and when it's warm due to the clothes I am wearing and stiffness in the cold. The cold range ball will feel harder too
  15. There is a range rat at a nearby course who weighs about 145 at 5'6" tall, and he loves his longer drivers. But, he can hit pretty much hit any Driver, left or right handed, to about 3 bills. The longest drives he hits are at 47-48"
  16. I spotted Kirkland wedges at Costco - you could buy them while you wait
  17. Is there a forgiving iron design (slightly oversized, somewhat wider sole, pre-worn front edge), but without a hot, thin, trampoline face? I want some forgiveness without the odd chance of launching a ball too far. I'd rather my miss be a little short with some feedback from the club than long ever. The clubs I have been looking at are Maltby KE4 Tour+ & PTM, Ping i500, and Cobra Forged but there might be others I am looking for?
  18. I picked up this beauty! It's a putter called "the original" and has Arnold Palmer in script on the sole. What is this worth? I think I got a good enough deal.
  19. Seeing that gator reminds me, "Daddy needs a new pair of shoes!"
  20. I can look at all the shots on GolfPad after the round and I have all my rounds on it since I started playing golf in 2017. My experience with theGrint app was less interactive, but it did record fairways hit and bunkers without extra work. Pluses and minuses to both I guess. I get a link like this to share my round: Scored 92 at Mountain Meadows Golf Course http://www.golfpadgps.com/round/RUV2D823 #GolfPadGPS
  21. I also use thegrint.com for my hdcp. You can use the app or the website. I use the app 'golfpad gps' to record my rounds, so I enter my scores online hole by hole with putts and penalties on thegrint.com
  22. I know your pain! My last round I found myself in great position off the tee and also did not have great approach shots or good putts for bird. A friend of mine says, "That's Golf." I say, "Hitting a round ball, with a crooked stick, at over 100mph from uneven terrain - never goes to plan."
