For me the trick was practice as has been mentioned a ton. Specifically practicing the 40 yards and in wedge game. Being able to get up and down from 40 yards more often can reduce your score quick.  Think about it this way, if you know you can get up and down more often from that distance, you don’t worry about hitting greens because it’s essentially a 2-putt and now you have 40 yards each direction from the pin or 80 yards total.  Taking that pressure off has actually lead to hitting more GIR.

Remembering to take advil about an hour before teeing off.  And that only gets from below average to a little above average but its less painful which makes it more fun.

Half the bucket is inside 100 yards. My favorite drill is taking a 50 and 59 degree wedge and picking three targets with each club.

I’ll hit five balls to each target using different lengths of swings.

It’s a great way to get rhythm and trust your approach yardages.

When I’m short on time for my practice, I do this:
    Warm up first.

    Then I “play” the course.

If it calls for driver 7 iron to hit green on hole 1.  I hit driver then 7 iron.
Next hole a par 5? Driver, long iron, say 75 yard wedge shot… oh? I missed the green.  Hit a 25 yard pitch shot.
next is a long par 3?  4 iron.
    etc…

Maxfli Tour for me.  A couple of weeks ago they were on sale for $109.99 for four dozen.  Downloading the app gave me a $20 coupon.  4 dozen= $89.99.  Thank you very much.

I was surprised how much I like the Maxfli Tour x.  I think you would be hard pressed to find a better value.

Close all the golf course and make golf a simulator sport with only one course option 🤣

Thank you for the feedback, I ended up ordering the wedges from Sub 70 on the labor day sale. Thank you, again, for all your input!

That's certainly OK, Dave.   Reasonable people can disagree about things.

I think the Rules fit the recreational player just fine as they are.  Remember, all of those "unfair penalties" than many people would like to change don't do anything about the actual difficulty, they just increase the score.
Should everyone play the same course, the same distance?  The world's best, local scratch players, 20 handicappers, aging men (like myself), women of all levels, everyone plays the same tees?  I can't agree.

I think there should be just one set of rules,
and those rules should be determined with the recreational player in mind.
The USGA makes the rules for people like Bryson and expects us to play by them.
They should do the exact opposite and let the elite players play the game that we play,
    course length and difficulty included.
If our club champion and head pro both shoot around par, we need the world's best to threaten breaking sixty every time out to illustrate the real difference between them and scratch players.
Pro bowlers play on the same size lane.
Pro pool players play on the same size table.
Pro tennis players play on the same size court.
Let's see what the best players in the world can do with unrestricted grooves, unrestricted balls,
sixteen clubs, and 6000 yards of real estate.  They we'll see the real difference between them and our club champion and our club pro.  See how they'll respond when they have to shoot 57 or 58 on Sunday to win.
It they shoot 71 at 7500 yards, we really don't have a clue what they're doing.
    We have no relatable reference.

Agreed on divots! Seems like an unfair advantage for courses that don't keep them filled. Maybe a one-time lift and drop anywhere in the fairway per round?

That’s a great example of smart course management! Sometimes it’s all about putting pride aside and choosing the club that keeps you out of trouble, even if it means sacrificing the chance to get there in two. Your dad’s approach is exactly what this strategy is about—finding consistency and lowering scores by playing within your strengths. And you’re right, knowing when to take your medicine is crucial. It’s not always easy, but it definitely pays off in the long run! Thanks for sharing that story!

I have a couple of Sub 70 286 wedges in the satin finish.  They work well for me.  Good out of greenside bunkers and they will stop on a dime on full shots.  We have a sandy range and the faces have become pretty marked up in a few months but that doesn't affect their performance.  As a graphite user, I am really impressed with Sub 70's shaft choices.

I'm on the Shot Scope train as well. Up front cost. NO SUBSCRIPTION. New features continually being added. A decent price point. Not only is it a GPS golf watch but all of the data is there if you want to use it. I don't use all of the info right now, but it has definitely helped me drop strokes because I know the distance to the flag, and more importantly I know exactly how far each of my clubs go just based on the data it collects over time from each club. Those 2 pieces alone will get you on the right foot.

I'm currently using the PXG 0311 3x Forged 50° & sugar daddy 2 60°. These seem a bit more on the pricey side but fitting proccess alongside the actual quality of the clubs seem 2nd to none. Hit these with the confidence the ball is going to pretty much stop dead when needed. I'm now toying with the idea of a 54°/56° 3x Forged instead of the sand wedge I currently have in my bag

In the market for new wedges. I am gaming with Sub 70 699 Pro irons down through GW and now looking for new 54 & 58 wedges.
Anyone have experience with the wedges from the DTC Brands? Haywood, New Level, Takomo, Sub 70, ect.?
With these being such crucial clubs, not sure if it is worth going Vokey or possibly the new Hi Toe's from TM.
