  1. For the better part of 3 years, I have been gaming the Evnroll ER5 with the gravity grip.  Previous to that putter, I tried everything from the 2 Ball, Odyssey #7, Scotty SS 2.5.  The ER5 made me want to get away from a mallet putter. The mallets fit my eye, but I have always had an issue with distance control with mallets.  The ER5 varied so much in terms of distance.  I even tried changing to different grips as I believe in the Evnroll grove technology.

    Day 1

I took my new Ai-One to the practice green at my local course.  It has a good amount of slope and undulations to really test my putts.  It was a face off between my new Ai-One vs. ER5 vs. Scotty SS 2.5.  I tested the putters at 5 and 10 feet. Both uphill and downhill putts with minimal break.

The Scotty did the worst in terms of direction.  That is not to say it is a bad putter.  Just that the standard blade leaves little room for error for me.  Shots I intentionally off the toe and heel were punitive, as expected.  On well center hit shots, the distance was good. I was able to control the distance other than a few putts I hit up on too much.

The ER5 did the best on direction but the worst on distance control.  Putts a little off of center did not stray much from the center line, but then I would hit one in the middle and it should take off like a rocket.  Is it possible to hit a flyer when putting?  This putter has always felt heavy to me, and I am sure that contributes to my issues.  I had the notion that I would play this like one would a heavy putter.  Line it up, and let the weight take over.  Good in theory, but I found it hard to control/predict my putts speed.

Ai-One has a great feel.  Similar to a WhiteHot insert, but not as soft.  I like the blue head color with the white face.  It is a good looking putter.  I feel like the double wide is a good compromise between a mallet and blade. Single sight line is clean and easy to use.  One of the things I really like about this putter is that it sits square when I set it down behind the ball. I have had some putters that do not sit square, and that has always messed with my head when putting.  It puts the notion that the putter heard is weighted "strangely".  I have seen the advertisements and social media reviews, but I was not prepared for how good this putter performed.  All of the putts I put a good stroke on, were basically in the cup, or came to rest right next to each other.  I intentionally hit putts off the toe and heel (within with insert range) and they were all also within inches of each other.

    Day 2.

First full round with the putter.  I only had (1) 3 putt, and it was because I was a long way off and mishit the putt. My distance control was spot on and most of my putts went in, or left me with a tap in.  I had a couple of putts from the fringe that nestled up nicely near the hole.  With my ER5, I would have a couple of putts that I would blast 3-5 feet past the hole.  None of those today.  I found that I was much more relaxed when putting and I could just focus on direction.  Now, If only I could learn to properly line up a putt.  I would have shaved 7 strokes off of my round.  So many putts just skimmed the edge, or I did not read the break correctly.

I did try the DB 2 Ball and Seven putters at the store before deciding on the double wide.  For some reason those 2 did not sit well with me, and I struggled with direction control with those even more that usual.  I know I could do a proper putter fitting, but what is the fun in that?

The Ai-One is in the bag....for now.

  2. Round 2 with the RSX in the books. I played a windy Vegas course over the weekend (Siena). I played the RSX on the front 9 and ProV1x on the back 9.  I don't know if was due to the much warmer temp than when I first tested the Bridgestone balls, but they felt significantly softer then before. Almost mushy on all of my shots. Driver, irons, wedges.  Performance was still about the same as before.  Higher launch and spin with the driver and iron shots compared to the ProV.  I usually can check a ball pretty good when playing my ProV1Xs. With the Bridgestones, I had to play for a bit more release then I was used to, so a few chips ran long past the pin. On the back 9, I was getting 1 hop and stop with the ProV1X.  Such a night and day difference in feel between the 2.  Maybe I will try the RS or XS to compare the feel of the ball. I had a hard time feeling where I hit the ball on the club face.

There were a few times I was struggling during the round, and the MindSet logo reminded me to keep it simple and visualize and focus on the shot.  K.I.S.S.

Still a fan of the ball, and MindSet.  I will keep playing these until I lose them all, and I will update again if anything changes.

This may be a dumb question, but has anyone blown on MCC+4 grips? If so, how have you found them to be in terms of rotating or moving once they're in place?

I'm big on MCC+4's for my grips, but worried about any potential slippage or movement during or after the swing such that they become misaligned.

I have blown on MCC +4 with no issue. Just make sure you prep the shaft well to remove any oils etc.  I usually use acetone and then I torch it to burn off any residual oil or reside.  Just a quick once over with my little butane torch.

  4. I received my box a few days ago.  I received the Tour B RSX based on the questionnaire.  You all know by now what the box looks like. 🙂

I have played Bridgestone balls before. The last time I played them was the B330S years ago.

    First impressions:

The ball feels like it has a matte or textures feeling to it.  I am not sure if it is the dimples since they seem fairly flat with different size dimples. Nothing that would impact my game, but when I compare it to the smooth finish of my ProV1x it does stand out.  I like the Mindset logo on the ball. The colors and circles are not distracting, and you can always just turn the ball over so you do not see it at address.

    Performance:

Full shots - They feel softer than what I am used to compared to the ProV1x or TP5s that I play.

Chip/Pitch - These spin on par with the ProV1x, and most than the TP5. They are noticeably softer feeling and sounding than either ball which I did enjoy.  They gave met he impression that they would land softly and they did.  I was able to get them to check nicely on the green, even from thick rough.

Putting  - Same consistent soft feel and roll.  No issues with performance.  I was putting with my new Odyssey Ai double wide (review coming soon) and they all of my putts had a very tight grouping (on the putts I did not flub)

Mindset - Like I said before.  I like the look of the logo.  It is a nice reminder that helped me to minimize my swing thoughts while playing. I tend to have 10-15 thoughts from ball position, to wrist hinge, to weight transfer.  Even before getting these balls, I have been experimenting with cutting it all down to "just hit the ball".  For me it worked to help quiet my mind and simplify my swing.  I suppose anyone could draw 3 dots or circles on their ball of choice.  I felt like I was swinging more freely as I stopped trying to steer the ball.  Consequently the my shots tended to go farther and straighter than when I over-fixated on my path. The course is not where you want to try to fix your swing.  I did not find the logo to be a good alignment aid for putting for me.  I tend to like a single line drawn around the ball. When I tried to align the circles to my putt line I always seemed to miss to the right vs. when I use the drawn line. When just applying the Identify, Visualize, Focus methods to my putts they tended to go in or were closer to the hole.  This does make me be more intentional with my shots as oppposed to my usual overthinking each shot.  I am a fan.

  5. Nice that you got fit.  The Toulon putters are fantastic.  As everyone said before the performance is the most important thing. That being said, I get the allure of owning a Scotty.  Hey, if it makes you happy and it fits your budget, why not?  I have bought and sold a couple of Scottys over the years. There are some really beautiful putters, but they do not put the ball in the hole any more than others I have tried.    I just got the AiOne blade wide and the hype is real...so far.

  6. $400 (max) assuming the fitting was thorough, like with a Quintec or something similar.

    1.  Evnroll anything.  Love my ER5 but if I got fit for a blade or some other head hosel config, I would be down for that.

    2. Cleveland anything and have a really nice dinner with the savings.

    3. One of the Odyssey AI putters

    4. TM Spider

  7. I love the look of these irons.  I have a set of D7 Forged that rotate in and out of my bag. I do not mind the top line and they a do not look like a VW on a stick like some G.I. irons.  My D7s feel great, go far, and I get plenty of spin anyway so stopping power on the greens is usually not an issue.  You also can get move bang for your buck with Wilson equipment.  I am going to try their new wedges next.

  8. I like the +4 option in grips.  I wish my current grip had that as a option.  Instead, I build up the bottom of the grip with 4 layers of tape to get the same effect.  I find that I have better touch on delicate wedge shots and I less grip pressure in my right.  I wear an XL glove so the midsize +4 or built up option work will for me.

  9. That is going to be an amazing build.  You say you have everything, does that include tip weights?

I always dry fit everything first including blowing on the grips before gluing and taping anything down.  I also do not use the tour epoxy when building a set so I have more time to fiddle, and can mix a larger batch.  You will leave things to cure overnight anyway.

Good luck, and I am also looking forward to pics of the finished set.

  10. I think I would be a great tester for MSG for three main reasons.

    1. I am an absolute gear head.  I love everything that is golf related. Clubs, balls, shows, electronics, bags, carts.  You name it, I love learning about it.  I am interested in the material something is made out of, the manufacturing process, as well as researching the marketing claims vs. actual performance.  I have started building my own clubs years ago so I could experiment with different shafts, grips, swing weights etc.
    2. I live in SoCal near a dozen courses so I have access to courses and ranges mostly year round.
    3. I just really really love golf and would represent the "average" golfer well.  The opportunity to share some of my experiences with others would be amazing.

  11. I don't play too often so it does not bother me to pay for a premium ball.

My preference is the Prov1x.  It has a consistent spin and approach distance that is the go to part of my game.  That being said, I have also mixed it up with the TP5x balls I have been gifted this year.  The TP5 balls are comparable but I just like the feel performance of the ProVs.  If I start to play more, I would likely play the Vice Pro Plus. They are the closest, less expensive, alternative to the ProVs I have found.

  12. I had a test iron I built with one of he Nicklus Secret Grips, and I hit it great.  I put a 20g weight in my irons, but it is not working out in my gamer set. The club overall feels heavier, and I lose the feel of the head.  I may pull the grips and give up on the experiment. They are now at a C6-7 swing weight now.  Golfworks sells these kits as well. https://www.golfworks.com/tour-lock-pro-weights/p/tl0026/

  13. Looks like Finchey is trying to pop the face off of another driver. 🙂  I have accidentally done the same thing.  Luckily the cart had a steel cage.  Now I just try to land one into the basket when it drives by, regardless of the distance.

  14. I just walked my round yesterday.  It is good exercise, usually cheaper, and you don't go any faster since you usually have others in your group.  The only times I ride are mostly when I play with friends who are all also riding, to be sociable, or if I am trying to squeeze a round in first thing in the morning with limited time and will skip a few holes.

  15. I am a little late to the party, but I agree with the lack of overall value in the packages.  I have had an executive package for a year now, and there have been some good pieces, but also a lot of duds.  For every Penguin or Travis Matthew item, there are 5 house brands or items I would not wear.  Also, how many pairs of black golf pants can one person reasonably own. 🙂  I find myself returning about half of the packages due to sizing or just not vibing with the products.  I also do not go through clothing as much and now find myself with an abundance of golf clothing that I do not wear very often due to putting stuff in the rotation.  A lot of the time, there are ShortPar4 tshirts and hats that I end up donating.  If you can get a trial code or a discount, it is worth the gamble to try and get something different, but it is not worth a reoccurring subscription.

Heads are in great shape with one small ding at the bottom of the 4 iron.  There is a bit of rash on the shaft of the 7 iron.  I tried to get solid pictures of the issues.

Lead tape on the back of the heads to get the swing weight to my liking.  I can remove them if you want.

Priced to move to account for them not being perfect.

5 iron measures 38.25 tip to grip with 0.5" increments between the irons.1065019345_IMG_7366(Medium).JPG.6a6ab84ff5d558441f6475f75f75312b.JPG.52d364248a2dac320c0e0a05a19f600a.JPG1134544270_IMG_7365(Medium).JPG.e2bbd6d1e6e20e5938982c95088903fb.JPG.4c203f995cef44feb45818c48aa4a72c.JPG1699990207_IMG_7368(Medium).JPG.7d186fba5b4cdfa21bb2466369d4b83c.JPG.9f75041ea939d9493f7d921c05ef6052.JPG15071906_IMG_7367(Medium).JPG.020473b3f4307b868929a23a358b4d5b-2.JPG.6ee4019385eac7b6e67a83ca6e02c995.JPG541654322_IMG_7369(Medium).JPG.11fcc299fb362e40f4fb6430668b9731.JPG.297b8349916b04e4502c15fa4f022ff2.JPG

Hello everyone.  I have been a lurker for a few years, and finally figured I would complete my profile and be more active here.

    1. I have been playing golf for about an 15 years and play to a 15 hdcp
    2. I love ... and hate ... how challenging this game is.  Perfection is unattainable.
    3. I have been reading the review and articles for years.  The level of testing of golf equipment is unmatched anywhere.
    4. I am in the LA area so I don't really have a home course.  I play where it's cheep and I can get a tee time.
    5. The best thing about golf in my area is that I can play year round. The worst thing is that it is expensive and rounds can take 5 hours.
    6. I work in tech support
    7. My user name is super original.  I live in CA, and I'm a GOLFER.  🙂
