Jumbo grips are definitely expensive, not sure if anyone offers any that are "affordable".  Iomic also makes a really nice grip, not the same as Pure but somewhat similar.  They are only $16 but may be out of stock...

I play Lamkin Crossline Oversize for years. PGA SuperStore has them for $6.59 a grip. They wear well, and just clean with warm water, and dishsoap. Wipe dry, no rinse. Good to go..Tacki-Mac has similar grip online, possibly cheaper. They offer sets for 13 clubs...

  2. I know this is a year old, but I bought a Cleveland HB Soft 11C. Never owned a center shafted putter, and so far I like it. Played with a Carbite ZH for 20 years, and it was still good to me, but it was time for a change, as I was upgrading my entire bag, from driver down, sans a few clubs that will never leave my bag. I like the way it feels, and I never see that ugly "hop" after the stroke, when I need to putt from long distance. I notice that my putts are more online, and when I miss, its really close. The black alignment line is the only thing I did not like, as it would kinda disappear when I would look down at the club, so I used a white paint pen for more visibilty. Also used the white paint pen in the crease where the "wings" or "fangs" meet the body of the putter. My old eyes see this much better, and my putting is much better. Speed is what I need to practice. Overall this putter will be in my bag for years to come.

Another thing that just came to mind...

As I'm getting older, only 48 but feel older some days... I find that I do have pain in the hands sometimes.  Early onset arthritis I'm sure.  Has anyone been in the same boat and considered larger grips or have specific grips that you find help with that sort of thing?

I do find the Midsized MCC's help a little bit as they are bigger, but still have some issues at time with that.  Has me thinking about if I shouldn't explore something a bit bigger and or softer to help with that sort of thing.

Just in case anyone had any thought's I was throwing that out for additional conversation.

I used Lamkin Crossline Oversize, with standard tape. Been using for at least 5-6 years now. Has helped with pain in my hands tremendously. Could not play nine without pain in my hands and forearms. All my clubs have oversize, except driver, which has a midsize grip. Grips hold up very well. Have not played much this year, so I'm good to go in that dept. for next year. Just clean them in warm soapy water, no rinse, dry with dry towel. Yes, name brand grips have gotten expensive, so you can look at Tacki-Mac grips(online). They have a crossline type grip(can not tell the difference), with a lower price. I have used them with the same success as Lamkin grips...

Love the Cally Supersoft Matte green!! Also have the red..you can see the green ball from all over the course.  I love the feel, and distance is not a problem(my swing speed is 80), and the SS has nice manners around the green. This ball is my gamer all year. When it gets cooler here in the Chicago area, I don't have to look for a softer ball. Have played the same sleeve for 3 rounds with no problem-got a little dirty. Ball washer cleaned them up no problem. Never thought about moisture absorption. Ball performs for me.

Looking forward to playing Maxfli Softfli matte green. Recently found a Maxfli Softfli matte white ball on the course while looking for my ball in the bushes. Never found mine, but put the Maxfli in play right there, 9th hole, played it till the 17th, where my tee shot found the water on the left. Finished the 9th with bogey. Parred the 10th par 3, just missed a 15 foot putt for birdie. Drove the green on 11, par 4 at 240 yards, made birdie. Actually played pretty well with the Maxfli ball, so I decided to pick up a box, matte green, for my next round. Possibility this weekend...want to see how it plays compared to the Cally Supersoft, which I have used since 2019. Anyone else play the Maxfli Softfli??

  5. Hello to all MGS bloggers!!

Been playing regularly since 1998. Basically self taught, with a few lessons thrown in, when I can't hit the side of a barn. For the most part, 95-100 is my usual score. There was some time when I first started playing, 125 was my number. Playing about 5 years, I spent a lot of time at the range working on everything. But, began to notice if I kept it in the fairway off the tee, much better hole, much better scores at the end of the round, something like 87-95. Life kinda got in the way with small children and all, did not play as much as I had before. Now, kids are grown with kids of their own, so I play a little more now. Had to kind of start over, bought all new equipment, so the learning starts over. Been playing a little more than usual this year, and my game is coming around. Looking to break 90 by the end of the season. When I retire in 2 years, will be playing a lot more..UPDATE July 4th 2022 to the original post. Have not played as much as I would like over the past 2 years. Been updating equipment such as my driver: Ping g410 SFT, dumped the stock Alta 55g R shaft for a Graffaloy ProLaunch 65g R, which I spend more time in the fairway. Still playing a Callaway Diablo Octane 3 wood(15*), but looking for something newer, with tech. 2 Snake Eyes hybrids (18*, 21*), GigaGolf hybrid irons(24*-46*),(not a conventional iron in my bag), added new wedges, Cleveland CBX2's(50*,54*,58*), which I just love to use. My game has gotten better just with these alone. And my putter is a Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 11c, c for center shafted, which I really like.

Golf is a constant challenge, with different courses, comes different challenges. Nothing like a nice day on the course, with people who also enjoy the game.

Found MGS through a link, and was immediately impressed with their mission, and their dedication to that mission. Lots of great info to be found here...

I live in the Northwest burbs of Chicago, and my home course is Villa Olivia in Bartlett, IL. Holes 15, 16, 17 are my favorites, as they have just about everything a course can throw at you.

The season is too short, and we have quite a lot of courses in this area.

Professional truck driver over 30 years, have a local driving job, with no weekend work, unless I want to work.

Part of my domain name..basically my initials, with the year I was born.

  6. Have the g410 SFT, and it came with the Alta 55. Felt a little whippy to me, and my SS is only 80 mph. Got me an Graffaloy ProLaunch 65 reg. flex, and I love it. Butt trimmed it to 43.5", glued on the shaft adapter, put on a new grip, and headed to the range. I have kept the 55, as I am a senior, and if my swing gets slower, I will put the 55 back in.

  7. Try the Ping g410 SFT. Its a real slice buster. I mean you will still slice, if your swing is that bad, but this driver has kept me in the fairway a lot more than I give it credit for. My swing is a little inconsistent, but I am on the fairway a lot more. It will give you good distance too. I'm an 80 mph swinger, but I drove a par 4, 240 yds. to 11 ft. from the pin today with a Maxfli Softfli on the tee.. Get the right shaft for you on this driver, and you should be good to go...also, find you a ball that doesn't spin so much off the driver. The spin that helps around the green rears it ugly head off the tee when you least expect it.

The difference between tour balls off the driver at high swing speeds is generally pretty negligible, when comparing like models (i.e. ZStar vs ProV1 and ZStar XV vs ProV1x, Vice Pro vs ProV1 and Vice Pro Plus vs ProV1x, etc) and in general, the slower the swing speed, the less difference there is. Now, you mention Supersoft, which is an interesting wrinkle. Since many ionomer balls spin less than urethane balls (all Tour balls are urethane), high launch/low spin is a recipe for distance off the tee.

In this paradigm, I'd be really interested to see ionomer/low spin balls vs Tour-level low spin balls (TP5x, ProV1x Left Dash, etc). I don't know of many of these comparisons, but TXG did test the TaylorMade lineup (albeit at 120 mph) and found the Tour Response to be longer in the irons than either of the TP5 models. Off the tee, 120mph was too much juice, but at 85-90mph? I bet you could pickup a few yards...

Never played the TP5's, but recently tried the Tour Response, as I have never played a urethane covered ball. Played a couple of rounds with it, and on a couple holes played both TR and Supersoft, alternating each off the tee. The SS was always longer, if even only 2 yards. The TR just did not feel like I was making good contact, even though the ball was getting out there 210+. Can't say I really liked the feel of the TR, and short game off the wedges was just ok to me. Not any better than a 2 piece ball. With that being said, I will take a pass on the Tour Response...

  9. Not sure what they did to the cover, but, for me the '21 ball is definitely "quieter" off my driver(Ping g410 SFT). Distance, to me, is the same as the 2019 version which is when I switched to the Supersoft. Chose the red matte, as it stood out, but switched to the matte green, which I think is even easier to spot in the grass. I play both green matte versions intermittently, but the alignment aid is a lot thicker on the '21 version. I love the feel off the tee, and though my swing speed is only 80 mph, I drive about 210-230, which is the ball doing a lot of the work. Short game off the wedges with the '21 seems to spin just a little more for me, and my CBX2's help with that. I still try other balls for a few rounds, but still come back to the Supersoft. The '21 version is still the SS ball that we know and love, just a little better...

The tour response also has a significantly low compression at 48

The "core" is quoted in their website to be 40 compression, with an overall compression of 70, which I found on Dicks site, when looking for a place to purchase. Have not played this ball yet-looking forward to a round, after reading most of the reviews...

  11. Don't have a coventional iron in my set. Driver, 3 wood, all hybrids from 18* to PW 46*. Bought a set from GigaGolf. Had 2 hybrids in my bag-18* and a 21*, with a set of Cally x-20's, but have been replaced with a set of Reva's from GigaGolf. They play straighter than the x-20s, and get up easier than any iron I ever played. Great feel, good distance, and they look good, for a very, very, reasonable price. And, you can customize with different shafts, length, and grips of your choice.  Added 2 CBX2's, hit the links...

  12. Got the g410 SFT, and every once in a while, the dreaded slice shows up. I think it is my swing mechanics, but for the most part, my big miss is the duck hook left. It shows up when I get to fast with my hands. My 410 came with a 12 gram fixed weight. Trying to get a heavier weight was frustrating   and costly, so at this time, I bought some stick on tungsten weights, to bring up the draw weight to 18 grams, which gives me confidence off the tee that I will be in the fairway, probably at least 95 % of the time. I also put a heavier 65 gram shaft(butt trimmed to 43.5"), as the factory shaft, a 55g, was a little too whippy for me. The 65g helped a lot with that, as my swing speed is only 80 mph. I play the Callaway SuperSoft ball, as I love the feel, and the sound off the club is very pleasant. I love my g410, and it will be it my bag for a long time.

  13. I have played the SS matte green for the last couple of seasons, and I love this ball. Straight off the tee, chips and pitches feel good, and putting is like butter. What's not to like. If you have a slow swing speed like mine(80 mph), it's a good ball to play. Good distance off the tee, at least for me(210-230), works well around the green. I don't lose many of these. Reasonable price for this ball.

  14. Was playing Cleveland RTG 900's since 2002(52* 56* 60*), till I replaced them this past fall 2020, with Cleveland CBX2's(52* 58*). I started to think the metal was getting fatigued, not so said an instore pro at PGA. I just needed to upgrade to new tech, and these wedges are the bomb! So easy to get up and down around the green. With the matte finish ball I play, does not run to far past the hole, if at all. Distance control is really not a problem. They give me great confidence that I can execute the shot I want!! Scores should be comming down...

  16. I have played Cally Supersoft Matte balls for the last couple of years, and with a <80 mph swing speed, its right up my alley. I get good distance, its straight, and has nice manners on, and around the green. I don't fear coming out of a green side bunker, or a 30 yard chip. Love the feel off the putter! I am 64, and never had a very fast SS, so this ball helps me out, and keeps me in the fairway. I have played quite a lot of golf balls, 3piece, 4 piece, 2 piece, with different compressions. Some were better than others for me, but the Supersoft fills the bill for my game, as I am a 20+ handicapper, that does not play enough. I played a total of 5 rounds last year(2020) before the cold weather set in around the Chicago area. I feel confident when I hit this ball off the tee, and I think that counts for a lot. I am in the fairway a lot more with this ball, and to me distance is not the end game for me, accuracy is. If someone feels good about their game playing a soft ball, go for it!!

  17. Club head speed is everything. If you hit a Cally Supersoft with a 100 mph swing speed, of course you will lose distance. For those of us that swing a lot slower, all those lower compression balls work just fine to "somewhat level" the playing field. I have played 90 comp down to the 29 compression of the Duo. Duo got marshmallowy in the hot summer sun. The Cally Supersoft that I now play, with an 80 mph swing speed does not do that. And, I am always out in front of my playing partners with the driver most if the time, and we are all high handicappers. Its all subject to the FEEL YOU WANT, and not always how far you can hit the ball.
