Had a chance to play the Air Force Academy’s silver course, aka the Eisenhower course.  AFA has two courses, blue & silver.  Blue, I’m told, is more wide open but longer.  Silver is shorter but tighter & more technical.
My first time to play either so I can’t compare but the silver course does appear to live up to its description.  One par 4 was only 315yds yet it wasn’t an easy hole.
Beautiful course set against the foothills just north of Pikes Peak, great weather, what fun.
Thankfully I had a partner who plays there a lot and could guide me around, otherwise I’d have wasted a bunch of shots.
Played pretty well although the par 3’s ate me up.  Greens have a lot of slope which made putting difficult, still only 33 putts though.

I got up to play a round with @Tom the Golf Nut today and he set me up with the PGA pro at his course, Bob Ward. Bob was great, we started out talking about my game and questioned me on what I was looking to improve in my game.
I explained to him that I have a problem with shifting to my lead side causing lots of chunks with my irons and topping fairway woods.
He watched me swing for a while and told me it wasn't as bad as I was thinking and set me up with a couple of drills.
We started out with me trying to hit a ball and lift my right foot on the follow through. Well, I'll just say my coordination isn't that great.
The next drill Bob wanted me to do was to feel like I was pulling the club through with my left shoulder and not pushing the club with my right arm. That was it, I started hitting better shots than I had all round. He also wanted me to get the shaft pointing up to the sky a bit more and the combination was money.
We moved on to fairway woods where he marveled at my ability to consistently up the ball. A little change in set-up position and getting the shaft of the club aligned with my left arm worked wonders.
Driver was all about shoulder tilt at address mixed with the other drills and I was hitting nice draws.
Tom then took me to the chipping green and had me working on using my set gap wedge and 52 on greenside chips. He showed me the technique he uses and offered advice on landing spot. I had plenty of good opportunities at thinking most of them with one putt.
We worked on both uphill and downhill chips, where Tom chipped one closer than any I'd hit. I then proceeded to hit one that had a chance to go in, but hit his ball and sunk it.
I'll be working on this in the coming weeks and seeing how it'll work out. Right now I'm feeling more confident than I have in a long time.

The sunburn actually isn't too bad, I'm gong to rub a little aloe on it just as a precaution. It was worth it. I guess that 50 degree weather duped me into not wearing sunblock.
The pain is a good one, I'm going to feel it tomorrow but that'll be alright.
The directions you gave me were spot on, I got back to the interstate pretty fast and I'd say it saved me a good fifteen minutes or more.
Have a safe trip this week and wish your wife a happy birthday for me.

It was my pleasure. I had a great time as well. Hope you didnt get to sunburned. Between playing 18, lesson with the Pro, practicing what he showed you on the range after the lesson, and a chipping lesson you were out in the sun for about 7 hours.
Tomorrow will be a good pain though. Some sore muscles for sure.
Now you can see why I say my course doesn't have a flat hole anywhere.
Glad you made it home safe and sound.

I want to send a special thank you to @Tom the Golf Nut for hosting me today at his golf course. We've been talking about getting together again, and he messaged me saying the weather was going to be beautiful. I made the trip to NE Tennessee and had a great time playing a beautiful course.

I didn't keep score, and that was the plan. Getting a practice round in with Tom was both fun and educational. We spent time after the round on his course's chipping green and he helped work on my short game.
I will say that the course boasted one of my favorite tee shots of all time, a tight, hilly par 5 that requires pin point accuracy to get off of.

I don't have that in my arsenal, but it was so pretty to look at.
I can't say I played my best, but it was fun just going around the course with Tom and talking golf and life. I told him he's my lucky charm, as each of the rounds we've played together I've had the only two chip ins I've had this year.
After the round, Tom was kind enough to set me up with his local pro for my first ever lesson! A couple of tweaks to set-up and initiating the downswing and he had me hitting better shots than I've seen all year. I'll cover this on more detail on my swing quest thread.

Tom, thank you again for having me up. Watching you maneuver a course is a master class in golf strategy.

This is correct, I've used manual putting since i started using SS because my putter had a weight in the grip and no clean way to attach a tag.
Whenever you hit the count putt button it flags that GPS location as where you hit it from.
Don't Putt out then hit the button "2 times" to say you hit it twice, that will give you bad data. I make hitting the "putt" button part of my marking the ball routine. I also make sure I've been in the right spot for a few seconds before hitting it to give the unit time to catch up and give it a good mark.

@ejgaudetteand @Larryw - thanks for the replies.  They are going to drive me back to the docs, I need to read up on manual inputs for putting.  I have been under the impression that if I use the top right button to count the number of putts and then the bottom right button for recording that selection, GPS was not being used.
Methinks I need to get a little more educated 🤔

After today’s round I checked my stats and surprised by one of the strokes gained stats.  Putting.
I had 33 putts in the round but the SG ranking shows a -9+ when compared to a 10hcp.  Does that sound right?  33 putts will put me at a 9 shot deficit against a 10?  Maybe I just don’t understand SG well enough.

And played another round today without any drama.  The course I was playing when it flaked out must have been corrupted cause all seems good now 👍

I’m using manual entry for putting so does that mean I will never be able to rely on SG for putting?  I could be wrong but with manual entry the distance is not being recorded.

I use manual putt mode as well and as @Larryw mentions it’s only as accurate as the GPS which can be off on free lined courses and such so I always double check the distances when I can. Just takes some editing to make the data accurate and usable.

    Not certain about that.
My understanding is that when you click the 1 button to record the putt - standing over the ball - that SS marks the GPS position and then when you click the pin location - when standing over the hole - SS also marks that GPS position and will then compute all the putt distances from the GPS locations.
So it should be accurate - at least as accurate as the GPS system allows. So definitely should check in editing that the distances look OK to you. Of course that requires a very good memory or jotting down distances to refresh your memory. That accuracy is not critical to me - so I just try to remember exceptional putts and check them during edit. As luck would have it - there are usually not a lot of them.
Requiring close accuracy can get quite time consuming - unless you just trust SS and GPS. I am hoping that errors if they occur, will even out over the season since I play a lot of rounds.
