JBones
There are a group of guys locally that have been kicking it "old school". By "old school" I mean playing with pre-1935 equipment. They are starting to play local Hickory tournaments as well. I bought a 9 club mismatched set on EBay for $150. So far I have snapped 3 shafts, but have enlisted my master woodsman grandfather to make me some more and a little stiffer. For those of you who have never hit hickory clubs, they are a completely different beast. I currently only have a single wood that isn't tourney legal; the 2w head is legal, but the previous owner broke the hickory shaft and had it replaced with steel. Below are some pics of my equipment. The lot 2 iron "Pitcher" - looks like its 50°+, but need to check Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy Follow @GolfspyBones
BIG STU
There is a whole thread over on WRX where the guys play sell and trade hickory equipment. They also have a hickory golf association and go all over the place playing tournaments. Even Mr Tad Moore of Dunlop fame is remaking hickory equipment. I sorta keep up with it because some of my friends that play that also play what we call Vintage as in steel shafts and persimmon. I am of the steel shaft persimmon catagory. I am looking into getting into hickory myself but the equipment is real expensive for the remakes. Glad to see someone over on this site moving into hickory. I for one will be looking forward to future posts from you on this Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- 5W TM V-Steel Fubuki 60r--- 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R----- 9 W TM V Steel TM MAS stiff---- Irons 2015 TM TP CB Steel Fiber 95 R--- GW Callaway Mack Daddy 2 52* shaft unknown junk pile refugee. fozcycle
Now that is what I grew up with. At age 8, my Grandfather gave me his hickory shafted clubs to learn how to play. I played them fortwo years before I ever got some used irons. My Grandfather took his hickory clubs to the Gold Coast of Africa where he designed and built a sawmill to export mahaogany wood to the U.S. for office furniture. He was there for about 2 years in the 1940's and they carved out a 9 hole golf course from the jungle so they could have some recreation. I only have one club left, which is the putter. I have it hanging onthe wall in my office at home. ole gray
I've seen the old hickory shafted clubs back in the day however I never played them. I was into the persimmon head drivers with steel shafts back when I started. Cool thread! JBones
It is so much fun and really challenging. The putters are so light and thin, but the ball rockets off the face. My first putt ever with a hickory was from about 20' and I hit it 15' past the hole. Louisville Golf makes great equipment, but it's about $2,000 for a tourney set.......I'm saving my pennies. Sschaffer24
This is an awesome idea! I can't say that I've ever felt an insane pull to this, but as a poster said earlier in the thread, with enough talk I can see that changing for sure! Awesome idea/set bones! hckymeyer
I have one club in the basement, I've always felt it's pretty much a 7 iron. I actually did used to play it when I was younger. Once I got old enough that I worried about breaking the shaft I used it for bump and run chips around the green, I even played it in high school golf Now I'm just glad I didn't break it, it's a great wall hanger. I don't have any desire to go play with hickory though. The game is already hard enough, if I want a challenging round with different equipment I bring out the Maxfli Rev black dot set with 1i - GW. I'm curious how this plays out for you though. Will it have any effect on your regular game? It didn't take but one of those to get my attention! To make matters worse, my Mom would snip a switch off the plum tree. I would be running around her in circles trying to avoid that whupping. Kenny B
When I met my wife on the golf course 20 years ago, she was playing PowerBilt blades and persimmon woods. She also had an Otey Crisman hickory shaft putter that belonged to her grandfather, but the shaft was cracked. We all called her Bam Bam. Last year I sent it to the Hickory Golf Workshop and had it reshafted with a new leather grip. I wrapped it up and gave it to her for her birthday. Good luck Bones! I will be looking forward to your trials and tribulations!! “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
