Kuchar style putting

Recommended Posts

Last winter I started tinkering with my putting. Living in the Northeast, it was down my cellar, with putt lengths of 3,6, and 10 feet. I was never a great putter, nor was I a horrible putter. Consistent, no....Streaky, at best.I found I was always kind of wristy. I think I made that word up. My putting stroke would be forever changing. Not being able to find a repetitive groove. On a whim, surfing E bay, I started looking at Kuchar style arm lock putters by Bettinardi. Kuchar being my favorite player, I'm sure was some influence. The average price tag on E bay was  around $250.00. High water mark well into the 3's, low end around $175.00 ish. I you tubed this style of putting and thought it wouldn't be that hard to replicate. My only drawback, was do I invest $250 in a putter, which I'm not sure if I can putt. The company, Bettinardi, caused me no concern. I knew they produced a fine product, it was the method that scared me. Well, I took the plunge. I bid on a store used only Kuchar 2 arm lock putter. I got it for far less than than the average price, and even less than I was willing to go. I practiced all winter, watching videos and looking at Kuchar's grip, and started feeling very comfortable. When the season opened up, the main problem I found was speed. The line was running true. The stroke was the same every time. The wrists were out of the equation. After getting the speed somewhat under control, I started making more putts. Not saying, by any stretch, I am now a great putter, but I can say my confidence level is, I can make any putt from all reasonable distances and then some. This style, I'm sure is not for everyone, but for me it was a golfing Godsend. So to speak. :D

I get the concept and have always liked the stroke this putter produces. I just cannot tell where in the world I'm aimed with it. A combination of so much forward press and how I hold my eyes and head over the ball gives me the sweetest roll on putts going nowhere near the target lol.

Line vs speed!

Does this mean you're on the line train?

I tried an Odyssey Armlock 1W and it produced a very repeatable true rolling putt. But like you gaussman I had no idea where I was lined up. There is some merit to the style, and maybe with a different putter I would have been able to line it up better. Having tried it I'm even more surprised the USGA doesn't consider it anchoring because it definitely helped take the wrists out of the stroke.

Good Q Stud but no. I've always thought of myself as a speed putter. That said I do need to be able to start the putt where I want to and standing over these I can't tell where it's going to start.

Yeah I agree. According to the USGA language, since the top of the grip is still actually moving back and forth then this type of putter isn't anchored even though it is clamped to the arm. It's a weird hair they decided to split there

That's awesome! I'm working on a grip change right now to take the wrists out of the equation. I tried Spieth's grip two nights ago and I think I've found my new grip! He's left hand low like me, so it was in my ballpark right off the bat!

Glad it made an impression on your game! That's awesome!!! I bet your speed will be much better this year just having a year under your belt.

I putt with a similar grip to JS only in reverse my left hand is high and on the club first and my right hand is like how he puts it on the club. Works well for me.

I have been interested in the Kuchar style putting it seems to work with him. If it works for you that's awesome.

That's why I said it's not for everyone........it took me a while, for comfort to have my head almost directly over the ball......at first everything missed left but with a few minor adjustments and repetitions I got it....Winter in New England gives you a lot of time to tinker.....

Good luck on your new grip....I know Koooch's style is not for everyone...but if someone was a horrendous putter or totally unhappy with there putting, I thought it would be worth the try.

The reason is not considered anchoring reads something like this.....

3) FOREARM USE
YES: It's permissible to hold the club against the hand or forearm while making a stroke (like Matt Kuchar). The reason is that the hands and arms still swing without restriction.

NO: Once the shaft is braced against an arm at or above the elbow joint, it's directly anchored, rules-makers say. So be careful how you hold it against your arm.

This thread may save the Forward grip on my MLA. I gripped way down on it and it felt much better. I'll consider myself fickle on this decision since the new grip is en route anyway.

They're may be something to this counter balanced approach.

  • 3 months later...

Well, the season has started full swing. Things are going ok from tee to green. Putting has been atrocious. One 9 hole league match I 3 putted 6 times. Then following Wednesday I played my home course. No, strange environs for me. 3 putted 5 times. Started getting very mechanical , and maniacal with the putter. Missing from 3 feet, 6 feet, 12 feet. 3 putting from anything more than 15 feet. Scrapped the Kuchar arm length and headed for the putter graveyard in my cellar. Went back to a 30 year old putter I had, 35 inch length and not real pleasing to the eye, like me it's old.Played 3 rounds with it and 3 putted 2 times. Maybe, not good but better. Looked to trade in the Kuchar arm lock. Got a fair price, and shipped her off. Once, I get the trade confirmation and cash, looking for a new putter. I am not a $400 putter guy, economics and better judgement has me stray from that price range. Tried the Cleveland Huntington Beach 1. Like the style, looks and feel. Has anyone ever or still use one of these? What is your take? I know the spy and Golf digest gave it good reviews. Any input???????

It sucks that the experiment failed, but at least you can say you learned something.

I played with a claw grip for the better part of two seasons. I really, really liked the repeatability of the line, but my speed control beyond around 20 feet was terrible and I left myself way too many 5, 6, + foot putts to salvage a two putt. Fortunately, I made a fair amount of them, but they were stressful two putts.

Although I am by no means a great putter, one thing that helped me going back to traditional grip was the yard stick drill (making sure ball stays on a yard stick the entire length of it) and the ladder drill for distance. They have really helped with consistency of my stroke.

Going to give that yardstick drill a go.....sounds like a cheap reasonable drill, my new putter is in route, so excited to give it a whack!!!!!!!

3 years ago I was coming off of a bad putting round and saw Kuchar using the longish putter. I went to Golfsmith and found a 44” NIke Core Method putter marked down from $180 to $28. I decided it was worth the experiment and continue to ride this train. Consistency on distance and line have greatly improved. It seems like I make everything (maybe a bit of an exaggeration) inside of 8 feet. My crew now hates my putter and have tried numerous times to outlaw it and/or steal it from my bag. Love the Kuchar/SImpson style!

Good for you, I hope it lasts. For me it was instant success followed by a total meltdown. I'm back conventional with a brand new Cleveland Huntington 1, and I'm putting really well. Continued success with the Kuchar style.
