Short Game Scenario - Shot Choice

Playing my Ping ChipR...less air, more ground time.  This past weekend, my second shot was from the right rough with a tree and low hanging branches between me and the green.  The green was also protected by a bunker from my approach and I was too close to the tree to go over it, so I decided to just punch it out with a 7-iron to the front of the green.  I ended up about 10 yards in front of the green with the pin on a top shelf.  I took my Ping ChipR which I swing with my putter grip and ended up less than a foot from the hole...saved par!  It was the only shot with my ChipR all day, but it was worth carrying.

I also have the Chipr, but I am not carrying it all the time with me.  Are you using it frequently, and did you take something out of the bag to keep that in the bag (the loft is similar to the 9 iron). Thank you

I don't carry a 3-wood, but I do have a 5-wood.  I have 14 clubs - Driver (10.5), 5W (18), 3H (20), 5H (24), 6i-9i, PW (45), GW (50), SW (54), LW (58), Putter (34”), ChipR.  For me,  the 5-wood is more versatile.  I hit it off the tee box and I have more confidence hitting it from the fairway than a 3-wood.  I’m 71+ and I don’t generate the club speed from my younger years!

Driver: Callaway Rogue ST Max 10.5, set to 10.5°, R Flex

Fairway: Callaway Rogue ST Max 5W, 18°, R Flex

Hybrid: Callaway Apex 21 Pro, 3H, 20°, R Flex; Apex 21, 5H, set to 24°, R Flex

Irons 6-9, PW, GW:  0311P, Gen3, Graphite, R Flex

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM8, 54° & 58°

Chipper: Ping ChipR, Black dot

Putter: Ping Heppler Fetch, set to 34"

Thank you sir.  How often are you using the Chipr, on average, in a round?  I could take the 5 wood out of my bag as I rarely use it, the Chipr is also good for long bump and runs when I used it given the heavier weight and 9i type loft. Are you using it often?

It depends on my GIR for a round.  My last round I hit 12 green, so I only had 2 opportunities near the green which called for my ChipR. The other 4 misses, I use a combo of GW, SW, & LW shots.  If a round of less GIR’s gives me more opportunities with my ball on the fringe or further off the green, I’ll use a combination of ChipR or Texas Wedge (putter) shots.  The ChipR is close to my 9i loft, 38 vs. 40, but its swing weight gives me more confidence in a better strike.  The ChipR club grooves even puts some bite to the ball on occasion.  I use my putter grip with the ChipR, too!

This is probably a 7i bump and run for me - get it up and out, then rolling up to the hole.

In my Big Max hybrid bag:

I would do what others have said in taking a 9i/PW/Gap wedge and do a bump and run, depends on speed of greens and such. It seems to provide you with the safest plan with the least amount of variables for what could go wrong.  Though higher lofted wedges are tempting, and the younger version of me would certainly have played it that way, a low bump and run takes the fairway out of play and then provides you with plenty of room for the ball to roll.

I would without a doubt use my 52* wedge and use a putting stroke to hit it low and get it running. 60 feet is too iffy for me to use a putter on.

Did that exact thing today. Was about 25 yards from the pin, it was tight grass. Used my 52* and got lucky. It stopped 3' from the pin and I 1 putted for a par. I'm happy with that result.
