Tubac Golf Resort (Tin Cup)

Recommended Posts

My wife and I spent Valentines Day visiting the town of Tubac, AZ (~45 miles south of Tucson) and decided to stay at the Tubac Resort.  It's golf course is where part of the movie Tin Cup was filmed.  Knowing my attention span for poking through an arts and crafts centric town is short, she thought staying at the resort and me getting a chance to play the course would be a good itinerary... whadda wife 😊.

Our room was located on Tin Cup Lane.

The resort is nice and has that throw back, late 60's mission style vibe.  In all honesty, we felt the room prices were a bit steep for the overall condition and appointments, but it is still a nice place. The now 27 hole course was started after Bing Crosby, Will Rogers and others purchased a stake in the property in the late 50's. I played the Otero/Rancho 18 which was a great draw as Rancho hole #4 is where one of the memorable scenes in the movie was filmed.

One of the threesome I played with lived there in winter and knew the course, so that was helpful.  My drive on this hole left me with no chance of making the green (245 yards out), so I just layed up short of the lake then hit my wedge to about 15 feet.  I made the putt and proclaimed "I don't care how the rest of this back nine goes, I just birdied the Tin Cup hole". Truthfully I did care because I had a great back nine going and wanted to finish strong - making up for the 41 on the front.

I shot a 41/37 from the B/W tee.  The course has a huge amount or very old, very big trees.  I was fortunate on a couple of drives that the ball found that "90% open space", aided by the fact the foilage had yet returned.  In full bloom, this course could become way more problematic. Overall it is a very picturesque and challenging layout. The course is well maintained and has tee lengths that fit all games.  The $99 peak season green fee while high, is pretty much in line with resort golf prices for this area.

I would definitely recommend staying and playing Tubac Golf Resort if your heading that way.  If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer.
