Pulling it all together

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to compile a list a topics that I have posted in that cover a lot of aspects of the game. I'm probably missing a few things here but that's okay I'm sure someone else will post it for me "this one I enjoyed and helped me" or something like that. Feel free to add whatever you want or ask questions. Hope this helps people in some way.

Pre-shot Routine / Practice

I know that I have multiple posts that have this information in them but I'll write it up real fast again.

~ it is better to practice on the range only hitting 20-25 balls giving it your 110% focus and working through a pre-shot routine each time you make a swing. Mentally play the front 9 or back 9 of your home course. Put pressure on yourself to make a good shot somehow.

~ a pre-shot routine shouldn't be long 30seconds at most, here is an example and the one I use.

> get all analytical stuff without a club in your hand (distance, wind, elevation change, lie, etc)

> pull the club you need to make a shot for the situation and stand behind the ball with it visualizing the shot from ball to finish with as much detail as possible.

>> use a white, yellow, red tracer line if that helps you picture it, image the ball flight as best as possible.

> I make one or two practice swings behind the ball still visualizing the shot at 20 to 40% speed, to keep muscles lose and feel the motions i need to make the shot.

> I walk into the shot and I pick a spot on the ground 3feet in front of my ball on the target line I want the ball to start on, I set my right foot forward align the face only holding the club with my right hand to that spot.

> I take my grip and look up at the target I want the ball to start on, I waggle a little like Jason Dufner to keep my muscles lose as I let my feet naturally support my upper body.

> I look back down set the head behind the ball to double check it still points at my spot.

>> NOTE: if anything changes or I don't feel confident about something at any point I back off the shot and re-set / start over.

> Last thing to do is pull the trigger, my swing thought might be "smooth" if you have a swing thought the last thing that should go in your head is a FEEL thought.

Winter Golf: I have some tips that might help out everyone keep the rust off a little bit on an around the greens with never leaving your home or needing anything expensive. I have put together a little list of ideas to keep you all busy and fine tuning your games.

~ Strength / flexibility training over the winter, there are a couple good threads going currently about the topic.

~ Putting: put a coin down 6in to 1ft in front of the ball and practice rolling the ball over the coin with DIFFERENT LENGTH STROKES.

>> Yes that is a drill straight out of the Bruce Rearick's book of drills for putting, and probably his only drill that I can think of he has had me working on for a year now.

>> I have wood floors, it doesn't matter the goal is more to get the ball on line with different length strokes not where it goes.

~ Chipping: use some ping pong balls and if you have wood floors a door mat works fine as a buffer not to dint or scratch your floors.

>> You don't need to take big rips, really you just want to pull with the lead arm only with trailing arm passive it's almost like a putting stroke but hit down on the ball.

>> I personally just use my lead arm (left arm) to hit the chips and don't even use my right arm at all on the club.

~ The Basics and hard changes

>> A grip change is perfect for the winter, say you want to go from strong to neutral, now is the time to grip and re-grip the club while sitting and watching tv.

>> Posture, without a club you can practice getting into goo posture by bumping the hips back, leaving the back straight chin up a little, let arms hang in front of you. You can add the club in later grip down then head down towards the ground as you progress but always start from standing straight up and bending at the hips to bring you down to the ground / address position.

>> A pre-shot routine, you don't need a golf course to visualize and go through the motions of a pre-shot routine to groove one in before next season starts. If yours is too long learn to shorten it a little here

~ Swing changes

>> Start without a club and do the motions with a bunch of reps.

>> Start slowly making sure the motions are correct.

>> Once you get the motion at normal temp speed, then start the process over with the club in hand BUT grip towards the ground (hols the shaft just bellow the head)

>> Once you get the motions down with the grip down at normal tempo speed, then and only then put the club in normal position, start slow and build up to normal tempo speed.

>> Add a ball once you are confident in the movements and they happen correctly without you thinking about it.

A example would be me working on where to stop my backswing turn. I tend to over rotate / over-swing. So I did this exact drill from address to top position no club first, grip down second and now I am working with the club in normal position. Hopefully by time I get to the range in the spring it will be a no brainier. I turn and allow the left arm to restrict the turn i make sure it is not strapped across my chest and is straight out from my shoulder At the op of the backswing. The down swing from there is really the next step but you have to get into a good top position to set up a good downswing sequence.

Dude, one question.

You mean ta tell me that all the bullsh*t that I've posted, and I don't have one thread, I'm talkin one stinkin thread, that's worthy of your list?

I'm crushed B)

What about my Holiday Wishes thread? I mean, I know that there's no instructional value, though we got a Forum Bard outa it & got to see an exclusive pic of Santa's ass in a thong ;)

That's ok though, because I tend to use snuffs as a motivating factor & now I'm really gonna ramp it up!! B)

Have a good one Bro :)
