SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted February 28, 2014 SPY VIP Share Posted February 28, 2014 Pancakes: Yum Yum For The Tum Tum One of the things that has allowed me to lose thirty pounds during the past six months is my superhuman ability to deny myself the foods that are not good for me. I have stuck religiously to my daily calorie counts bt avoiding the delicious food bombs that in the past would have pushed my caloric intake into the stratosphere. There are a few foods that I really miss. One is the larger than-my-head burrito from Chipotle. That beast comes in at 1255 calories! That is very close to my whole day's worth. Another place where I miss the old diet is breakfast. The chicken fried steak, corned beef hash, and cheese-laden omelets are all gone. So too are all of the delicious baked goods like waffles, scones, and pancakes. I have come to terms with the fact that if I want to be a fit person, then I need to eat like a fit person. Still, I do admit a longing for the dietary decadence of old. FlapJacked: A Healthy Pancake Alternative? I have explored some of the supposed healthy alternatives/substitutes before. Maybe you have too. Has anyone else out there made cauliflower “mashed potatoes†before? Those are actually not that bad, but they are not mashed potatoes. All of the healthy substitutes seem to be hollow representations of the real food, and these pseudo-delights mainly just make me want the real thing more. It was with this cynical mindset that I opened the packages of FlapJacked Protein Pancake Mix. Basically, FlapJacked gives you a healthy, high protein alternative to the carb-loaded, nutritionally questionable pancakes of old. As a fan of pancakes, but not the calories and frequent carbo-nap that follows eating them, I really hoped that the FlapJacked formula would allow me to recapture some of that old breakfast decadence, without the decadence. GolfSpy Dave's Test Kitchen Without getting too much into my skill as a cook, let's just say that I am fantastic. No kidding, I'm pretty good in the kitchen. My joy of eating created my joy of cooking. I'm no slouch with the spatula. That being said, making the FlapJacked mix required zero skill. You mix it with water and pour it onto the pan or griddle. My secret tech though for these kind of operations is the blender bottle. It has liquid measurement guides on the side, the cool mixing ball that actually works for mixing, and a handy pour spout to pour perfect cakes. I had three different flavors to try: Cinnamon Apple Banana Hazelnut Buttermilk The first two mixed immediately, and cooked easily, but the buttermilk for some reason ended up thicker after adding the called-for single cup of water. You can see in the photos that they are a little thicker, and not quite as symmetrical. Overall though, the cooking was successful and I took my three stacks of griddle cakes to my testers. FlapJacked: The Taste Test In addition to myself, I enlisted my wife, kids, and one extra sleep-over kid to try the FlapJacked pancakes. Without building drama, I will tell you that the winner was the Cinnamon Apple by a nose over the Banana Hazelnut. The response to the Buttermilk was unenthusiastic. I'm glad I had the other two flavors, otherwise breakfast would have been a redo for the kids. I have since learned that the Buttermilk is excellent mixed with almond milk or spruced up a little bit in other ways. Un-supplemented Buttermilk just needs a little help. It just dosn't taste like pancake. I would have no problem going Cinnamon Apple again though, and my kids would welcome them as well. That version of the FlapJacked pancake achieves the mythical goal of being tasty, and healthy. The nutritional information is below. All in all, these are a solid healthy choice in the morning. What else ya got cooking?
