You might just be learning about 23-year-old PGA Tour rookie Smylie Kaufman, who seemingly came out of nowhere to win the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open for his first PGA Tour victory. Kaufman opened with rounds of 67, 72 and 68 in Las Vegas, and started the final round seven shots off the lead before his final-round 61 – including a back-nine 29 – vaulted him to the title.

Kaufman got that victory in large part because of his driving. He averaged 327.7 yards per tee shot, putting him fifth in the field in Driving Distance, and hit 62.29 percent of his fairways, tying him for seventh in Fairways in Regulation. Put those two together, and he led the field in Total Driving.

Kaufman games a Cleveland Classic 290 driver, which gets its name from its weight – 290 grams. The club boasts one of the most distinctive looks in all of golf, with a pear-shaped head and a sole design and color scheme that give it the look of an old persimmon driver. Its large, deep clubface makes it easy to generate solid contact, while the variable thickness of its face helps improve off-center strikes. It is also Cleveland's first adjustable driver, with 12 different settings.

The Cleveland Classic 290 driver made its debut at retail in the spring of 2012 with a suggested retail price of $299.99. It currently has an estimated trade-in value of $16.64 and an estimated resale value of $36.98, according to the PGA.com Value Guide and Trade-in Network.

First adjustable driver?

Yeah, I think they missed that one.  Don't recall that one being adjustable

Right. It's non-adjustable. I talked a friend into buying one several years ago because I liked the looks of it. He never hit it that well and soon after parked it in the garage. Moral of the story.... never buy a club your buddy tells you to buy. LOL

I never hit it that well, but we had a gal who was a beginner buy one and she hit it 200y and in the fairway most of the time.  She was much shorter and sprayed it everywhere with her old driver (don't remember what it was).

So how much does technology matter in today's clubs?  Makes a strong case for the lack of difference between today's drivers and those 4 years ago.
