  1. Question for the group here:  do you guys rest at all between sets of swings?  I've been just banging them out one set after the other, just stopping to write down the numbers and grab the next club.  Now that I think about, I should probably take a minute or two between sets, like with any other exercise.

Slow day at work, so my brain is looking for something to think about...

Mike, thanks for the advice. The pain, at its worst, runs from just under my wrist, up through the hand following the crease toward my thumb. I suspect (based on no expertise at all) that is a kind of tendinitis. (One forum user, who is qualified to have an opinion, suggested something similar to me in a DM.)

I'm turning 40 this summer. I saw a comic one time make the joke that getting old just means that you stop healing: "Ah man, banging my shin against the coffee table. I guess that's just going to hurt for the rest of my life." Maybe this is one of those things 🙂

Sure thing!  Hope it heals up soon whatever it is.  It sounds similar to what I feel - at it's worst, I can feel it at my left elbow, then at the knobby bone on my wrist and all around the base of my thumb, but concentrated mainly at the joint there the thumb connects to the hand.

As someone who'll be 57 in March, I can confirm that not only is that comic right, but also things start to hurt for no apparent reason 😉

On consistency of speeds between swings or between days: I think one of the things that the radar has highlighted for me is the remarkable difficulty of being at peak performance day in and day out. The guys who do this for a living, in whatever sport, are doing something hard.

An update on me: I haven't done any SuperSpeed swings since my last update. I visited Topgolf last week, and I've been playing with my new SkyTrak, and the hand pain flares up every time. I hate the idea of totally shutting down golf swings for whatever length of time, but I'm starting to think that it might be necessary.

Have you had an orthopedist look at your hand?  I'm wondering it that might be tendinitis.  If it is, it's possible that the inflammation could be in your forearm.  You might be able to get some relief by massaging your forearm, especially if you notice some muscle knots or tender spots in there.

If it's any consolation, I've found that rest doesn't actually help my tendinitis, but on the flip side, playing through it doesn't generally bother me - my hand around the base of the thumb actually feels fine after a few swings, then bothers me a bit later.  Sometimes I take Advil before playing, that helps a bit.  I did some physical therapy a couple of years ago, but it didn't really help much.

On the other hand, if it's not tendinitis, probably best to address it sooner rather than later.

Echoing what several of you are saying, there are swings when I feel like I've cut through the air faster than ever, only to be surprised that the numbers were lower than I expected.  Other times, I'm amazed that that last swing that I took registered as high as it did.

I think a lot of that has to do with the tension in my arms and my hands.  Those swings that feel like a really killed it are usually when I'm trying to use my arms (and consequently my hands) to generate more speed.  The looser my arms and the lighter my grip usually produces higher numbers.

Same here on the feel of the swing speed versus the radar reading.  Good point on the arm tension, that's something I've been battling since I took up golf almost 3 years ago (along with starting my swing with a hip turn instead of my arms - I guess they are closely related).

My step swings are still a bit slower that my normal swings, I'm chalking that up to general un-coordination and not worrying about it. Another 64 weeks or so and I expect that to sort itself out.

Also, just wanted to mention that I hit 110 for the first time on one of my final 3 swings.  107 was my previous high.  Highest Blue swing is 98, highest Red 94, so I'm hopeful of cracking 100 on at least the Blue club pretty soon, and maybe even the Red in the not-to-distant future.

...my driver speed dropped a little... just like others have noticed. Curious.

In my opinion, I'd say it's a combination of the colder weather, natural variation in the short term (as opposed to the long term trend), and the expected plateau, and nothing to be too concerned about.  Calypso55 mentioned this being like Weight Watchers - I think that's exactly right.  I know if I step on the scale every day for two weeks, my weight might go up or down as much as 3 pounds from one day to the next, and the speeds I record on any given day do the same.  It's that long term gain that matters in the end.

I changed things up yesterday...normally I try to alternate the days I go to the gym with the speed training days, but couldn't get in the protocol Sunday, so I went to the gym yesterday morning before work (barbell squats, overhead press w/barbell, and deadlifts, so pretty beat after that, but the elliptical just doesn't seem to make me stronger 😉), then did the protocol after dinner, about 12 hours after the morning workout.  Definitely tired out a lot quicker than usual - I was feeling it by the time I got to the step-change swings (luckily I'm still on the first level, I would have been pretty gassed for the kneeling swings).  I guess the combo of working out the same day and swinging at the end of the day.  I thought that was pretty interesting to try out.

On Saturday, I did another 2 hours of indoor simulated golf, and felt more confident in swinging harder than I normally would, and definitely saw more virtual yardage that before I started the protocol, at least on the drives I hit well.  One drawback is using their tees, none of which let me set the ball to the height I'd use in the real world, so I was either getting  a little high or low on the ball on some swings as I tried several different tees.  Anyway, it's a fun couple of hours with the guys in my usual foursome.

I’m going to try when I get home. Just played a quick 9 after church. Daisy challenged me to swing as hard as I could with driver. So I did. Here’s a sample:

    IMG_1570.JPG

This device is 3 mph slower than the radar we use so 97 on this is 100 on that. I averaged 88 on it before we started, 94.7 today. Just under 240 for my 6 drives on the old GPS.

    Pretty stoked!!!

I hope Daisy sees this. emoji41.png

That's tremendous!  I don't expect to be able to get out until early April, I'm really looking forward to see seeing my own speed then.  Seeing results like yours (and the other guys here) are a real incentive to stay committed.

Those 18 extra swings are tough!!  It was 39º when I did my 3rd session of Level 3 today.  I was sweating when I finished, and yes I'm out of shape.

The double step swings are a little better today than when I started on Monday, but still feel awkward.

Yikes, that is cold for golf!

I'm just starting to get less awkward on those single step swings, it's going to be pretty funny when I get to the doubles.

One more week before the kneeling swings for me, I think that will be interesting too.  I bookmarked for inspiration this instagram video that was posted about 10 pages back:

  8. Just finished week 5 - mostly an off week, but felt good today.  Saturday, I played virtual golf with a couple of buddies, first time I've swung at a ball since the end of October, so I was all over the place and it was hard to tell if there was any effect from the speed training, but I did hit a couple of drives about 20 yards longer than I normally hit in real life, so I'm going glass half full here.

Only got 2 sessions in (Wed & Fri) this week, last weekend turned out pretty busy - I was planning to get a session in Sunday after church, but ended up going to 11:30 Mass instead of my usual 9:30 (we had the neighbors over to watch football and stayed up later than usual), so that threw the day off...then Mondays I get up at 5 to go to the gym and got lazy when I got home after work...and Tuesday is bowling night...Excuses - if you don't like one, I've got plenty more 😉

Wednesday's session was the slowest speeds I've had since week 1, which was discouraging, but today I had a nice jump across the board, definitely my highest average across the 39 swings in the protocol.

When I first stumbled upon this forum, I happened to notice in the intros to the testers on the first page Kenny B linked to then new protocols and warm up that the testers were asked to use - these are updates to what is currently on the SuperSpeed site, and I believe it was mentioned here that these new versions will soon replace what's currently on the SS site:

An overview of the SuperSpeed Golf system protocols is provided here:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/8mxwr5vfa1ksvmf/Protocol Outline Packet.pdf?dl=0

The warmup routines are provided here:

    I've been following these protocols.

Thank you Mike! Keep working at it, you're off to a great start and it's nice to have you along for the ride as a fellow tester.

On Another note, I would recommend sitting your radar up on something, you only need about an inch or two. I've had problems with my non-dominant swings registering probably due to swinging it a bit above the radar. I use the kneeling pad I bought from Lowe's.

Now on to the good news. I did my final swing speed test today after finishing the second SuperSpeed protocol. Drum roll please......

My starting swing speed was 89 mph and my current swing speed is now 94.6 mph. That's a 6.4 percent increase over the 14 week test period and a 4.6 percent increase from week six till now.

I do a slightly modified SS warmup at the course, and it's worth it.  Instead of each arm, clockwise/counterclockwise and palm up and down, I do both arms together to speed it up a little.

LOL on the Cats & Dogs... at our Turkey tournament I was doing the Toe Touch RTT exercise and our teaching pro walked by and said:  "Praying to the golf gods?"  I said:  "Absolutely!  At my age I need everything I can get!"

That's great!  I'll definitely give the warm-up a try at the course, at least the parts my friends won't laugh too much at!

Not immediately after the protocol, but within an hour. I play most Monday mornings (walking).   I do the protocol at home, then drive to the course.  It takes me about 30 minutes to drive, setup my pushcart, spend a few minutes in the putting green, and catch the guys that I play with who are coming off the range.  I do not have a problem on the first tee; I actually hit my first tee shot better than I do other days that I don't do the protocol but hit balls on the range.  I get sore about hole 14.

I DO have a problem when I have to wait longer to tee off.  A couple of weeks ago on Monday I did the protocol and headed to the course like usual.  Frost delay.  I tried to stay loose, but we teed off 90 minutes late.  That did me in.  I was sore almost immediately.

After 30 minutes it seems like a warm-up would wear off, like you saw with the frost delay.  I generally car pool with 2 of the guys I play with since we live close together, so the drive time is about the same as yours.  What I've done is some stretching and some swings in the yard before leaving the house, but I usually feel like by the time we tee off, any benefit has worn off.

Looking forward to using the SS warm up protocol this spring when I start playing again...not sure if I'd be brave enough to do some Cats & Dogs next to the 1st tee while waiting our turn though 😉

I have to do the protocol outside; no place inside.  Knowing what I know now after testing for 14 weeks, I would be hard pressed to do this over the winter if it weren't for the test.  Don't get me wrong... I like the speed increase!  However, dragging myself outside in 30 degree weather at 71 years old every other day is really, really tough.  The group thing keeps pushing me, so any speed increases belong somewhat to the group!I  I am certainly glad that I am on the "dry side" of Washington.  Outside in the cold is one thing; outside in the cold and rain is another.

Yeah, 30 degrees is good for skiing, not golf!

I actually woke up thinking about this since I'm working on my Stage 2. I'm also lacking a place to be indoors while training and it's been tricky to get workouts in. I've only had a couple of weeks where the cold has been an issue, mostly it's about the rain. According to the TVA website we have had 14 inches of rain the last two months and I've had to work around it. It can be done, but it is sometimes difficult to get motivated. This forum sometimes becomes a place for workout therapy and I'm thankful for that. The members here are definitely encouraging and help me keep going.

One of the great things about this program is the fact that it's not overly time consuming. You can do most of the warm up indoors and the actual workout outdoors and only have to be outside for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Love the review everyone is doing and glad to see such positive results. I am really contemplating the purchase, my only concern is will I use it during the winter since I have to go outside to do the protocols. I don’t mind the winter golf rounds but would I have the discipline to go out into the backyard to do this every couple of days. That is the big question for me, wish I had a garage or really high ceilings.

I actually purchased my set last May, but only used the them 2 or 3 times, so I think you are right about the discipline part - I definitely didn't have it, it's really seeing what everyone on this forum is doing that's has me on track now.  Kind of an accountability I think.

Luckily I have a garage, although the ceiling is a little lower than I'd like, took me a few swings to convince myself that I wasn't going to hit it.  A bit too cold outside here in Massachusetts for doing this outside most days.

  17. Hey guys!  Glad to see some new people jumping on board like me as "unofficial" testers.  Also have to admit I'm a little jealous of some of the speeds I'm seeing here - some of those are numbers I'll only see on my meat thermometer when I leave a steak on the grill a little too long!  But that's my fault for waiting until I was 54 to start playing golf.

Finished my 4th week of the first level protocol this morning.  Still nursing the end of a headcold/sinus infection, but today the speed started to come back after dropping off for about 5 sessions - my final three swings with the green club were 102, 104, and 105, which is the first time I've had 3 swings in a row over 100, so things are heading in the right direction!

    2019-01-04_10-44-41.jpg.92fe673e9a8233a5ecdd0384312cf616.jpg

I kinda suspect that 107 the first week was really just a mistake by the radar, next highest swing that first week was 96.  Lefty swing (non-dominant) is starting to come along, but still feeling a bit awkward, and I'm also having some trouble getting the radar to pick up some swings (mostly on the left side), so I'll have to re-read those radar tips.

Tomorrow I'll be playing at the golf simulator, first time actually trying to hit a ball since I started the SS training, it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

My week 13 is completed.  Set a personal best with right and left-handed Red (heavy) swings.  I'm jealous of the guys that have been able to do these sessions outdoors.  Living in Wisconsin I've been forced to train in my basement almost the entire time.  Guess that's better than being outside when the temp is in the 30's and there's a rain/snow mixture like today.

    2104459943_week13results.JPG.c8ba7e0851fc55331ab175d636ef0208.JPG

I'm extremely excited to see where my driver speed ends up after the end of the 2nd level next week.  I was recently fitted for a new driver shaft to go along with my GBB Epic Sub Zero head, but I'm going to use my old shaft for the test to make sure any speed gains are from the program and not equipment related.  That being said I'm definitely going to test out the new shaft as well to see what my max gains are.

    Happy New Year everybody!

    That's awesome!

As I started my warm-up swings today, I heard something running through the woods, looked, and saw a deer. I've been living in my house for almost five years and it's the first one I've seen.

    Now that's cool!

Over the past 5 - 10 years, we've had a wild turkey population boom where I live, there are a couple of flocks of 10 or 15 turkeys that wander around the neighborhood, it's a pretty impressive sight.  When my dog got old and just liked laying in the sun in the front yard, one of the turkeys would sit on the front steps and keep her company once in a while.

We shall see.  We shall see.  Temps tomorrow... right at freezing most of the day until late afternoon, then rain.  I might have to use the patio; consists of moving furniture before and after though.

Been mostly like that in my neck of the woods since November 1st - when the temp manages to get warm enough to be outside, it's rainy.  Luckily I have a garage - I've only been able to do the SS protocol outdoor once and that'll probably continue until late March.  I have to admit I'm just a little jealous of the guys that can get out and play a round this time of year.

I got mine from Santa as well 🙂

I've done the first two days of the beginner protocol, did anyone else see what looked like a drastic rise in the numbers from day 1 to day 2?

    Excellent!

I didn't see much difference between days 1 and 2, but I did see a pretty big jump on day 3.  Week 2 was a about a 5 mph jump on average across the board.  Just finished week 3, and was back down a little, but I'm chalking that up to Christmas week.

  22. Just finished my second week, not bad considering I went out twice after work this week for a few beers, something I don't usually do.  Also feeling a little sore now, figure that will wear off in another week or so as I continue.  Final 3 swings today were 102, 104, and 105.

After some swings, I feel like maybe I held back just a little...as I get more conscious of that I think it will go away.   Kind of like that tee shot on the first hole, sometime there is one too may golf thought running around in my head ;-).
