Yes, it is fairly common, and I don't think it's the 3* loft difference either.  I think on a "good" strike, the yardages are there, us mere mortals just are not as good a striking it as the club gets longer.
6 iron seems to be a good spot for a lot of golfers to consider the switch to a hybrid, depending on how you use that slot in the bag.

    ExPutt Match Play Outing 9.18.24
Last evening @pozzit @AverageSizedDog and myself embarked on a few ExPutt matches, We played 3 matches with All of us winning or tying a match.
I won the first match, 2nd match Pozzit and myself tied for first place and the 3rd match Pozzit and Averagesizedog tied for the first place honors.
Overall my putting in the matches was dialed in, distance, breaks and speed were on display, on the few holes where I carded a big number it was due to lip outs with in 6ft or less.
I did miss read a couple downhill and uphill putts that I either blew it by or came up short. I have made some slight adjustments to my grip that has me hitting my intended line more efficiently and also my speed control has improve, especially after I completed practice from 10,20,30,40 and 50 footers, I got a lot of feedback from the ExPutt data collection on these tests, I reduced the stroke line by almost 2* and my face angle has been consistent at 0.67 open.
This combination has worked to improve my overall performance, but I'm still improving and taking the data and graphs the ExPutt is producing and making adjustments as needed.
ExPutt has definitely helped me improve my putting and continues to have my arrow pointing in the upward direction.
Here are a few screen shots from last nights 2nd and 3rd matches,

See that’s what I’m loving about the 5 and 6 in the 300’s as well I’m getting 204 from the 6 and 213 from the 5 on my last trackman range session. And the 6 iron I hit on Sunday carry all of 200 per the gps. I’m happily in a full 300 set but the 5 & 6 are really nice

I'm digging those gaps from 6i down. I have noticed that many of us, when we get to the top of our irons have a gapping issue. I'm not even sure I'll keep a 5i in the bag going forward next year due to it being almost the same as my 6i at this point (similarly to you). Plus, I'm far more consistent with my hybrids than my 5i on strike, direction, and distance. Maybe it's just me, but it's something I've noticed on the forum and read in articles - mid/high handicap gap issues with long irons. *shrug*

Managed to sneak an hour at our new indoor hitting facility today with the new Full Swing overhead launch monitor.  I forgot to charge my phone before I left for my lunch break and ended up with a paper weight for a phone so unfortunately no photos.  The Full Swing system wouldn't send an email today either so I am going off of mental notes.
My focus and goal today was get a better idea of the yardage gap through out the Ai200 set. Also played a quick virtual 9 holes to work on hitting some golf shots.
    Main observations today:
10-12yds between every club from PW-6i 20 yard gap from AW-PW 5-7 yard gap at very best from 6i to 5i Low toe strikes offered noticable forgiveness I expected a little more seperation but I am very happy with very consistent 10-12 yards through the bag.  AW-PW gap may have been from getting warmed up, no worry there yet. More testing needed with 5 iron.  Decent strikes were struggling to get to/past 200 yards with the best topping out around 205-207 today.  That number should be much closer to 215 for optimum yardage gaps.
    Bonus thoughts/observations:
Ai200s feel a little bit heavy compared to my Wilson CB w/ DG 120 S300.   Wonder if swing weight or overall weight is different? Wilson 7 iron (34*) vs Callaway Ai200 7 iron (30*) is about a 1 club difference in distance Wilson 7 iron (34*) vs Callaway Ai200 8 iron (34*), Wilson was a couple of yards longer than Callaway Callaway AW does perform nicely when opening the face on tight artificial turf lie Ai200's performance (subjective & quantitative) improves when tee'd up Overall fun day, with some decent data collected.  I won't quite say trends are developing just yet, but some ideas are forming.

I just got in from playing a quick 9. I ended up walking with another guy i see out here playing all the time. I handed him the Opus 54 to hit and compare against his pretty old Tour edge 56. It's fun watching other people put some zip on the ball when they normally wouldn't! After a couple shots his eyes were wide, looked at me and said "these have to be fake!"
I assured him they're new and legit! However he wasn't a fan of the $180 price point which I understand, but premium clubs are worth the $$$
After we got done i went back to the green close to my property and hit some random shots with both 54 and 58. Throw out the couple outliers and these wedges continue to impress! I enjoy flying the ball to the hole just to see it hit the brakes and halt! I absolutely love these wedges, and plan on getting to the good driving range here which has a nice short game area. The plan is to take my camera and mic so I can record some stuff. To be continued....

Club Testing at PGA Super Store
The ol'lady and I decided to make a trip to the Tucson area and utilize a hitting bay at the PGA Super Store in Tucson last week. While there, I wanted to grab a few of the demo and used wedges available to see if there are any glaring differences in both performance and feel. I needed to do this since my current gamers are nowhere near the caliber the Opus Platinum and other higher end OEM offerings.

I got one hour in a practice bay outfitted with a GC3 launch monitor. I also utilized a trio of fresh ProV1 golf balls I had at home. In this test, I decided to stick to my 53º Opus Platinum as there were more options available in the 50-54º range to test against. Along with the Opus and in-store offerings, I had my 52º current gamer tag along for a baseline of what I had been using prior. For all swings, I decided to go with a 1/2 swing to simulate a pitch from approximately 40 yards out, as I feel this is my most utilized shot with my wedges.
    The Data and Opinions

    Final Thoughts
I am sad I really struggled with the Vokey offering. I really wanted to see how the Opus's most often compared rival performed and I just could not make it happen. Maybe that club is "too good" for a noob like me? Outside of that 💩show, I really enjoyed getting a feel of how the other higher tier wedges looked and felt in hand. The Opus Platinum absolutely outperformed the offerings through both data and feel. I just absolutely love how this club works and feel even stronger in its abilities seeing just how consistent I am with it. Other notables were the sheer power felt with the Mizuno S23 and just how EASY and FORGIVING the Callaway CB wedge is. IF, I were testing all of these clubs to purchase then and there, Opus Platinum included, I do not think the spin numbers would have won me over when I am almost as consistent with the Callaway CB offering. I loved the ease of which I could swing that club and feel a 50º with just over 5k spin average would be perfect for the $159.99 MSRP per club. Opus Platinum at $239.99 MSRP? Tough sell for me in this go-round.

The mallet cover may never be a gamer cover, but it looks nice behind as decor in my office.

Playing some catchup to get some good data in.  But early impressions from the course are interesting.
Feel is top notch for hollow-bodied irons I am hitting shots a little more thin than normal, Ai200's forgiveness seems to be a little lacking low on the face On the other hand, forgiveness higher on the face seems to be great Early impressions from the 5,6,7 irons are pointing to a gapping problem

I'm digging the look of this putter, I like a mallet shape and this is the best looking one L.A.B. has designed to date.
