RookieBlue7
Blast it firrst. Otherwise you'll be blasting the color change and could alter it or remove it. To get the honey/wheat color it won't take near as long. Make sure to stop as soon as you see the color change start to happen because it goes from the wheat color through to the blues and purples fairly quickly at that point. McaseyM
Thanks for the info! That whiskey finish on the bellum winmore is what I'm after. Do you usually torch or bake and if bake, what do you recommend for temp and time? The head is carbon steel. silver & black
A also have a question. I have a Rife Aussie putter. I want to torch finish it to the rainbow hue finish. If I glass bead the black finish off, will it torch okay or do I need to chemical strip it? It is 303 stainless.
RookieBlue7
MCasey, if you've got a gas over, you could possibly get it hot enough in it. It takes right at 500 degrees to get it there. That's metal temp (485 degrees to be exact). And that's the average to get the wheats. I've gotten it very light wheat in an electric oven and my gas oven has gotten a little darker. S&B, that putter is stainless under the black. Long as you get the black off you can torch it. The more you polish it, the more colors you'll get and the better they'll show up and look. To get the rainbow effect though you'll have to torch In The BagDriver: TaylorMade M2 (2017) w/ Project X T1100 HZRDUS Handcrafted 65x Strong 3 wood: Taylormade M1 15* w/ ProjectX T1100 HZRDUS handcrafted 75x3 Hybrid: Adams PRO 18* w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4 Hybrid: Adams PRO 20* (bent to 21*) w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4-AW: TaylorMade P770 w/ Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Black Onyx S400 SW: 56* Scratch Tour Dept(CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerLW: 60* Scratch Tour Department (CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerXW: 64* Cally XForged Vintage w/ DG X100 8 iron tiger steppedPutter: Nike Method Prototype 006 at 34"Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Chris O.
So I have a question on refinishing...a buddy of mine wants to refinish his irons. He has the Tour Preferred MB's with the satin nickle chrome finish. When stripping that finish off will it affect the club head? Weight? Any damage that could happen? Then he wants the smoke black finish like the rac tp MB's had. Is this all possible to do? RookieBlue7
You can strip it, it'll lose several grams in head weight. They'll also rust if a new finish isn't a plated finish of some type. If he wants the smoke black, that was done via PVD (physical vapor disposition). Not many places offer PVD finishes and it's also not cheap if you find one. But it can be done In The BagDriver: TaylorMade M2 (2017) w/ Project X T1100 HZRDUS Handcrafted 65x Strong 3 wood: Taylormade M1 15* w/ ProjectX T1100 HZRDUS handcrafted 75x3 Hybrid: Adams PRO 18* w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4 Hybrid: Adams PRO 20* (bent to 21*) w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4-AW: TaylorMade P770 w/ Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Black Onyx S400 SW: 56* Scratch Tour Dept(CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerLW: 60* Scratch Tour Department (CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerXW: 64* Cally XForged Vintage w/ DG X100 8 iron tiger steppedPutter: Nike Method Prototype 006 at 34"Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. McaseyM
Looks fantastic, man. You do the blasting yourself too? Thanks, I've redone each of these TPM 12s 2-3 x each to get it right, or if they get scratched. The gun bluing is nice because if something gets messed up, you can polish the area and reply the blue, if the heated head gets scratched, it's back to square one so the color stays uniform. I never actually got a chance to blast it, I have access to a very high speed polisher at the orthotics shop at my work, so I was able to use that to get the heavy polishing done, then did the rest by hand, 100, 400, 1000ish grit.
