Padreruf
Played Harbor Town last Friday as a retirement gift from one of my sons. It is in FANTASTIC shape as they are gearing up for the Heritage. Course is just flat beautiful...I love the Low Country and am moving there as soon as I sell my house...really! I played private courses for years...then became a Senior and love these prices. Discovered that there are plenty of public courses that are outstanding... If you come to Greensboro, play Bryan Park -- the Champions Course. Great layout and in great shape. Much better than Tanglewood in Winston-Salem where they held a PGA tourney for decades...condition has deteriorated. An unknown little gem is Holly Ridge in Archdale, NC...greens are some of the best around. "There is not such thing as a bad day on the golf course!" I played LPGA course annually on a trip to nearby Stetson U. Outstanding value and rarely crowded.... "There is not such thing as a bad day on the golf course!" hoganfan52
"Public" and "affordable/reasonable" have run so far afoul of each other, it's sickening. I struggle to call Pebble or Kiawah "public". But to actually answer the question, one of the best courses I've ever played/competed on, public or private, is Bedford Springs. Immaculately manicured place where you could easily be one of only 10 golfers on the course at any given time. mcurtin515
Agree 100% with Philly Golf Guy above on Pasatiempo and Rustic Canyon. Rustic is a must play for me every time I'm out in CA visiting the in-laws. It's a fantastic muni designed by Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford. Have to admit I'm a bit biased towards Gil's designs as my home track is one of his gems. Can't wait to get out on his Black design at Streamsong. Another fantastic muni is George Wright in Boston. One of the best muni's you can ever find.

Padreruf
SO....I just returned from a 4 day trip playing the RTJ Golf trail in Alabama -- Montgomery and Birmingham -- retirement gift from my sons who went with me. These courses are in excellent shape...some better designed than others...but on the whole a great bargain. The Ross Bridge course is outstanding...fantastic condition and layout. One issue with the RTJ courses is a critique from Pete Dye: "RTJ puts bunkers where the average golfer drives into them while the better golfer can carry them." He is exactly right. At 66 I drive the ball usually 235-250. That is not enough to carry the precisely placed fairway bunkers -- which were usually very full of sand. I played the courses at around 6200 to 6400. Wound up hitting a lot of 5 woods off the tee as a result. Anyway -- these courses were beautiful...lots of dramatic drops from tee box to the green. If you are looking for a really good deal check them out. I have played numerous courses in Pinehurst (not #2) and these are very much their equal...and much less expensive.
