Eric K
I currently play a combo set of Mizuno MP-20’s. 4-7 HMB, 8-PW MMC WITH PX Precision Rifle 5.5 shafts. I absolutely love these clubs and play to a 7.8 hcp. I happened to pull a Big Bertha 2i from my son’s set and tried it the the simulator. A little tough to hit but when hit well, it goes! So I managed to find an MP-20 HMB 2i recently. It came with a Recoil 95 F4 shaft. Hit it today and it really took a while to settle in. Felt very clunky initially but eventually I hit it well. My question to the shaft gurus and fitters is this- would I be better off putting a PX 5.5 to match my set or would I be better off going in a different direction, or keeping the Recoil? And before anyone says get a hybrid, I have a Mizuno CLK 3H and hit it pretty well. This was a bit of an impulse purchase to have a similar club that flights a bit lower for windy conditions. Thanks! Thanks! ... There is not an easy answer and advice from a stranger that hasn't seen your swing is difficult at best. I will say unless you are just looking for max distance off the tee using the same shaft you have in you irons is always a good bet. A Hy shaft designed for a Utility iron will usually produce a higher flight and more distance. Your F4 and 5.5 may or may not produce similar results so trial and error should answer that for you. A completely different shaft can work well but it depends on how you load the shaft, what kind of trajectory you want and how much does feel effect performance for you. Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Eric K
I realize there's a number of variables and there is no specific answer. Just figured maybe guys have gone thru a similar situation and could shed some light on this. Thanks! funkyjudge
Just now, Eric K said: I realize there's a number of variables and there is no specific answer. Just figured maybe guys have gone thru a similar situation and could shed some light on this. Thanks! I was just going to respond in a similar fashion to what chisag posted. A utility iron shaft in the 80 to 105 gram weight range is often a good fit in a 2 or 3 iron or driving iron. As a Professional Clubfitter, I have become a fan of the Mitsubishi Diamana “Thump” driving iron shafts, as well as the heavier Fujikura Ventus hybrid shafts (80 Series and above) for long iron and strong-lofted “player’s hybrid” installations. GolfSpy_APH
Altho have to echo all the above. I can day I have used a Evenflow Black in mine with good success. It is a ping crossover which don't label as driving iron, but that is in reality what it is. I would add length of shaft should be a priority. Ping make the settle shafted crossovers shorter and in the newest version all the shafts are shorter than they were and I do feel mine is a little on the long side. Coming from a different angle I did the exact opposite. I was rotating a 19* DHy and a Sim2 3 hybrid and because they were very similar in distance, I re-shafted my DHy with a VS Proto 85 iron shaft at a 3 iron length. It replaces my 4 iron but is more versatile. GolfSpy_APH 1 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... AutoFlex Dream 7 SF405 Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Kai'Li Blue 70r Hybrids: G430 Hybrid 22*... MWL_9
I had an impulse buy of the TaylorMade Stealth 2 UDI over the summer and just got it with the same shaft as the rest of my irons. I didn't hit it a ton, but was pretty inconsistent. Through my fitting at Club Champion over the weekend, I found it definitely wasn't the best shaft. A hybrid shaft was the much, much better fit (for me). chisag 1 Quote Bag: Big Max Dri Lite Summit Black/Red Driver: Callaway GBB Epic - Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green Small Batch "Hulk" 3 Wood: Callaway Epix Max - Aldila Ascent Red 5 Wood: Titleist TSR3 4-AW Irons: TaylorMade P790 - KBS Tour 120g Stiff (1/4" long, 2* upright) 54* Wedge: Callaway Jaws MD5 58* Wedge: Vokey SM9 Putter: Odyssey AI-One Milled Eight T Ball: Vice Pro Plus
GolfSpy_APH
Missed this, but I ended up with a Evenflow Black in mine. Hindsight I wish I had gone with the Tour CB from Ping in the crossover. I think it would have been a better fit, but no doubt that the black allows you to really go after it and not have any hesitation! chisag 1 Quote as of Oct 5, 2024 (Past WITB) Driver: GT2 with Graphite Design AD CQ - check out the Driver Shootout!
