@cburins I already know that I want this watch lol but something I’d like to see is how the shot tracking compares to the shot scope watches. I bought a shot scope X5 last year and really like it however it is exclusively a golf watch. Since I’m trying to be more health conscious I am trying to find something that does both really well.

Hey Coulter! Ive done some research on the X5 and here's my opinion on the comparison to the S70.

Both interfaces are extremely similar, I do prefer the aesthetic of the Garmin as it seems to be a bit more detailed. One feature the X5 doesn't have is the Virtual Caddy. If you're looking to also improve your game this is an extremely helpful tool to do so. The X5 also doesn't provide any info for the weather. The Garmin has a barometer that's also accounts for the weather during the round.

The shot tracking seems very similar and both phone apps seem to track the same data. In my opinion the Shotscope sensors seems a bit more sleek and fitting that the CT10 Sensors. Overall, I really think it comes down to whether or not you want the health tracking data. The X5 seems like an amazing golfing tool, not health.

Health wise, the X5 only tracks your steps. There are an insane amount of tracking features for the Garmin and apps are always being developed to improve the Garmin. The price difference is quite significant, but if you're looking for more health related features and golf improvement, I think the Garmin is your best bet.

If you have any other questions please let me know!

How did you play?

Meh. He's like a 50 handicap and we're playing in a 2 ball league (you both play the hole and your team takes the best score on the hole) so basically we're playing my score and I shot 49. I was a little aggravated by the lateness and lack of warmup and snapped my first two drives left, which is annoying because my miss is usually a slice. I started opening up the face of the club at address and managed to fix that after a couple of holes but it's hard to recover from 3 doubles to start out.

S70 is starting to respect my tendency to pull out the driver whenever possible and has stopped suggesting I take 4 iron off the tee, but truthfully the way I've been hitting that thing lately (a consistent 220-240) it's probably not a bad idea. I still miss with it though and there's not much more frustrating than trying to make the "smart" play and hitting a bad conservative shot.

Smoked one 299 over the water from here:

Hole10.jpg.90899637c492cd1664fa7401dbd8c4d1.jpg

And the latest in a continuing series of missed birdie putts. Hit a nice 6 iron and left my self 30 feet to the hole where I proceeded to throw up on myself with a 3 putt for bogie.

Well, the struggle continues for the putter sensor. For those of you not familiar, I use a SuperStroke Pistol 1.0 Grip and the CT10 Sensors are not compatible with that kind of grip.

I was able to get the insert off on one of the sensors, but now the tricky part is finding a way to attach it.

If anyone has some recommendations please let me know! I was thinking of using some double sided tape and seeing what happens. My only worry is with my putter rattling around in my bag it will fall off.

Not cordially great, but I used hockey stick tape to tape it to the end of my putter grip.  It worked.  The black tape colour wasn’t too bad either.

@GolfSpy_APH This question may have been covered, but has anyone tried pairing this with the new Z30 rangefinder and see if it works well as part of the Garmin eco system?

Will take a look.  The older Garmin rangefinder just took too long to give basic yardages, so hopefully they fixed that.

First Hypothesis: Does the Garmin S70 Body Battery Score Affect Golf Round Performance?

This post will only cover Body Battery VS Golf Performance and expectations about that. This article is only my first hypothesis and not a definitive conclusion at all. I'll propose new analysis during the nexts weeks and more intensive tests of the watch.

So, here is my initial answer after a golfing weekend in Bromont, QC, Canada.
To introduce this analyse, here is a bit of context: My week was marked by three distinct golf rounds:
1. Golf 9Chatel (9 holes)
   - Time: End of the day after work
   - Body Battery: 17/100
   - Course: Simple, short, and flat
   - Played alone

2. Chateau Bromont (18 holes)
   - Time: Early morning after a 2.5-hour drive
   - Body Battery: 39/100
   - Course: Complex and hilly with challenging greens
   - Played with my beginner wife (helping her throughout)

3. Royal Bromont (18 holes)
   - Time: Early morning after a good night's rest
   - Body Battery: 60/100
   - Course: Long with many water hazards, narrow fairways, and fast, deceptive greens
   - Played on foot with an experienced local player

Capturedecranle2024-06-02a18_02_58.png.33aa8ae10ec607cf6c8c66699ab7eee8.png

Body Battery vs. Course Difficulty
Based solely on my Body Battery, my performance ranking should have been:
1. Royal Bromont
2. Chateau Bromont
3. Golf 9Chatel
However, considering the difficulty of the courses, the ranking would be completely opposite.

Capturedecranle2024-06-02a18_07_36.png.73fc1d9d065de21077eaf50f19fc3cd7.png

Body Battery vs. Performance Insights
After playing these three courses, it was the second scenario that turned out to reflect the weekend reality. I performed better on the 9-hole course (+4) with a very low Body Battery than on the other two courses (+18 / +20).

Capturedecranle2024-06-02a18_09_21.png.229eaf89121a1ea32896741311b074d1.png

Several factors could explain this discrepancy:
- Course Difficulty: The Course Rating/Slope between 9Chatel (32/110), Chateau Bromont (68/122), and Royal Bromont (70.4/130) are significantly different.
- Course Length: The distances varied: 9Chatel (2508y), Chateau Bromont (5778y), and Royal Bromont (6145y).
- Weather Conditions: Bromont had a temperature of 28ºC over the weekend compared to 22ºC at 9Chatel on Wednesday. Fatigue and lack of clarity were more noticeable on the course I walked at Royal Bromont.

Body Battery vs. Sport Condition
Mental Focus:
Golf demands a high level of concentration and mental clarity. Performing better on a weekday evening after a stressful day, compared to a weekend round, might be explained by the need to unwind after work versus the pressure to excel on more prestigious courses. Playing relaxed, for fun, as an average player might yield better results than trying to perform at a high level with inconsistent technique.

Physical Endurance: While the impact of the Body Battery on other aspects is less clear, there is a definite correlation between endurance and the Body Battery score. Although I played well on the 9-hole course on Wednesday, I would not have been able to maintain performance over an 18-hole round that evening.

Consistency: For an 18 handicap golfer, consistency is challenging to evaluate, as it is the most variable factor at this level, whether the Body Battery is at 80/100 or 5/100. However, it is evident that when fatigued, finding a rhythm and being competitive is more difficult.

Conclusion
Based on this weekend's experience, my preliminary answer to the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the Body Battery score and golf performance is "NO, the Body Battery score might not be a definitive predictor of golf performance".

However, this remains to be confirmed with future golf rounds because it stand to reason that maintaining a high Body Battery score through good sleep, stress management, and balanced physical activity should contribute to better overall performance on the golf course.

Body battery is almost entirely worked out using a combination of HRV, respiration rate, and resting heart rate. Golf is a bit of a funny one for Garmin because the majority of their algorithms are built around endurance sports like running, cycling, swimming. I think where it shines is when you're walking vs riding, as honestly you're not getting your heart rate up that much most of the time in golf unless you're climbing a big hill.

Dang! I was hoping there would be the option for manual club selection/alternative without tags. Thanks for answering!

The watch should still pick up a shot (the Garmin sensors rely on the impact of the left wrist as well as the sensor data) and you should be able to apply a club to any shot after the fact. I use mine without the CT10 sensors now (Arccos is way better for "what do I do next" data than the terrible Garmin golf app).

I do think the main place Garmin is falling way behind is in the analytics side of things. Only being able to compare yourself to "everyone" or else golfers of the same handicap isn't that useful for golfers who are trying to improve.

This is good to know, thank you! I think double sided tape will be the best move. I might have to sand it down so it's a bit more flush and that the full surface will stick.

Shot Scope has putter tags without the screw but with that double-sided tape stuff. So far I've not had any issues with it. When I put it on, I made sure the top of the putter grip was good and clean. Then after putting the sensor on with the tape, I set it on the sensor (turned the putter upside down) for the rest of the day to help "press" the tape into the putter grip. Not sure that works for everyone or every type of double sided tape, but so far it's worked for me.

FYI, I use the Super Stroke Pistol 2.0 grip.

IMO shotscope is the better tracking system of the lot. Easiest to install and use. However the Garmin watch is more accurate in regards to distances.

Last day of our baseball trip today - we will have about 10 hours on the road depending upon Tampa traffic and weather. It’s been a great trip but no golf - I did bring an old 7 iron along and have done some drills - I’ve also tracked my health - sleep scores are getting better but still not great. Hoping that this really improves once I’m home in my own bed.

While it might have already been said here, how would something like this compare to Arccos from a stats/tracking perspective?  While I know it gives a lot of health related metrics, how does it do from just a pure golf perspective?

Hi @BradM

Yes it is the perfect "replicate" it gives you the same data displayed a bit differently but the output is really the same.
In terms of performance vs Arccos, I prefer using the Garmin watch than the Arccos' app on the phone or Apple Watch, however, my perception is that the Arccos tracking system (with the Link pro for example) is better.

In addition, the Arccos' sensors and the Arccos' mobile application are a better on every aspects.
I wrote a post about that:

Bunker Hill GC - Garmin Review (+9)

IMG_4536.jpg.d1069e995c2635714011bf061cc36992.jpg

Hey Spies, Happy belated Canada and Independence Day! I didn’t realize it was a long weekend and all the courses were booked up. I ended up booking a course Ive never played before because of it. This was a 12 hole Par 3 course! Very odd, but it was beautiful. We played the tips and there were many 200+ yard holes which made it quite the challenge.

To start the round my body battery was at 69 and to finish I was at a 54. I started the day off at a body battery rating of 100! Got a very restorative sleep as I didn’t have to work.

B1E81DCB-51D8-4191-90EC-3C208DFBCFC4.JPEG.2c144c7761b2f58530d8d037a927ab1e.JPEG

I want to start this review off with the Virtual Caddy Feature!

This feature is absolutely amazing as It tracks all your club distances and dispersions. Overtime its gets even more and more precise as it collects more data. On the first tee it was a 170 yard hole playing down to 158. Usually for me this would be a light 7iron (my 165-170 club), but the Garmin has a barometer that accommodates for wind. We had a back wind and that’s why it recommended my 8 iron.

IMG_4470.jpg.5914ea606137dce7169577993e60d80c.jpg

My shot ended up just short of the green as I caught it a bit fat. Good chip, lip out putt, then tap in to start me off with a bogey.

The Virtual Caddy also accommodates for hazards and will tell you to club down or up to avoid them. It also factors in your left and right misses which is extremely beneficial. Again, with more and more info/stats it really molds to your game.

(the holes had very interesting names!)

After a month of using the Garmin products I have nothing but good things to say about them. Sure, there are small things that can be said, but this watch is absolutely amazing and Is definitely benefiting my overall health and golf game. I have another Tournament on July 15 and I look forward to competing and having the help from the Garmin.

Had my best round of the season at University of Maryland today, a 92 that should have been lower. The GiR is slightly misleading, a couple of my 3 putt bogies were putts from off the green that the Garmin interprets incorrectly. Good day with the driver is always fun and made a 100 degree afternoon feel a little bit cooler. I did notice a slight mismatch with distances on the cart GPS and the Garmin as well.

I ran a little test on the health side of things. I didn't wear the watch for about 12 hours, in part because the kids kept trying to play with it (thank goodness for the lock device mode). I was curious how the body battery would reset and how it would calculate that over time without being used.

I had a normal day and normal rest and put the watch back on a little later and the body batter reset to 75. I want to run it again to check but it seemed pretty accurate. Although I don't normally start days that high I could see it.

I did have another anomaly where I had a 99 battery life a few days later which did not feel like that. I went to bed early, but was up early so maybe it was just telling me to go to bed earlier?

The HRV is something I have been paying closer attention to and while I always seem to be in range overnight, there are some nights where I dream and then it goes all over the place. Not something I would say off, just more interesting to take note of.

The last thing I have come to rely on and really enjoy is the alarm. No more phone alarms here, just the ones set on the watch and it is a much more pleasant way to wake up in the mornings and not nearly as disruptive to the family.

IMG_0697.jpeg.c6fd0b0b4d62d18de2a0f57d80ac95e8.jpegHone from vacation and went to the range in anticipation of playing tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday.

Stretched, hit done pitch shots on the practice green, moved to the range and grabbed my wedge and 9 iron to make a dozen or so practice swing before hitting half a dozen 9 irons off a tee - my normal warm up ritual.

I was struggling hitting the ball thin with irons and blocks with driver and fairway woods the last time that I played.

Very little of that today, none with fairway wood in fact and only one driver - it was still a reasonable distance though - drives were between 220 and 230 - very nice result for me especially since only the one would have missed the fairway.

Some thin irons but generally thin to win not so thin as to be 140 line shot pitching wedge from 1118. 🙂

Wedges were meh - glad I worked on them for a bit.

Tike off definitely helped smooth my swing out.

What it didn’t help was the sensor issues that I’ve had since day one, the loose one pictured above was from the practice swings.

@BradM I would echo what Corentn wrote about the CT sensors v ARCOSS word for word. I will take the Garmin watch for yardages and course info all day. It’s very accurate and simple to use.

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, taylormade m1 irons (5-PW), Top Flite Gamer wedges (52,56,60), and odyssey white ice putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. When just getting a round in with friends or scrambling I play whatever I might find on the course or might find at the bottom of my bag.

After having the new watch for a couple of days and getting 9 holes in yesterday using this over my other gps watch I love it! So much more receptive and crisp! I love the health aspect of the watch which was the main reason I wanted something new (there is a lot that I need to learn here). Although I’m sacrificing the convenience of the automatic tracking (I won’t be buying the ct10 sensors or at least don’t plan to at this time), I do realize I can go back and edit in the garmin golf app which is awesome, I really enjoyed this over previous gps golf watches I’ve had.
Having this watch even makes me want to keep the garmin r10 that I had been planning to sell over my rapsodo mlm2 if nothing else than for the convenience of having everything in 1 app.

1 question though immediately comes to mind. I’m having trouble using the face it app to upload a picture of my family to use as a watch face. Did anyone else experience this problem?

Hey Coulter, did you updated the watch? I found once I updated to the latest firmware I was able to use the face it app. You then have to install the watch face you created to your watch, then hit the settings button and select watch face.

Garmin Breathwork Feature

Hey y’all, just wanted to post about a small feature that I really enjoy about the Garmin S70.

Breathwork is a meditation feature the Garmin has to offer. A unique perk this feature has to offer is when the watch reads you are experiencing high stress it will offer a breath work practice.

IMG_4360.jpg.7b6dba997dcf9e3a3934d62ea06ae18f.jpg

I had this happen the other day and is how I found out about it. I was experiencing high stress at work and I entertained the watches breath work prompt. It give you the 3:3:3:3 practice for 5 minutes then ups you to the 4:4:4:4 for 5 mins, and I believe it keeps going up? I haven’t done more than 5 mins of it as I was still working, but it definitely helped me lessen the stress.

IMG_4359.jpg.1148b95f4dce859a15f29d67b286ba6f.jpg

3 seconds breathe in, 3 second hold, 3 second breathe out, 3 second hold and repeat.

When I got the Garmin watch I downloaded the Meditation App from the Garmin Store. It’s free to use and tracks your HRV, BRPM and stress levels during the meditation. I try my best to meditate for 15-20 minutes before bed.

IMG_4573.jpg.33474f471e2673006b492312a05b8175.jpg

It also links to Garmin Connect and will affect your stress levels/body battery.

I highly recommend trying this out!

Mastering the Game: An In-Depth Review of the Mobile Garmin Golf App

Golf technology has evolved rapidly over the past few years, offering golfers more tools to improve their game. The Garmin Golf app, paired with the Garmin S70 watch, promises a comprehensive golf experience, but does it deliver?
Here, I'll share my insights after extensive use, focusing on the app's strengths and weaknesses, and areas where it could improve.

Useful Features
Despite some drawbacks, the Garmin Golf app has several features that can significantly benefit a golfer's game. The shot tracking feature is quite useful, allowing you to record every shot on the course. This can help you analyze your performance over time. Additionally, the Virtual Caddie feature provides club recommendations based on your previous shots, which can be particularly helpful for those tricky approach shots.

virtual_caddie.jpeg.b456a0e333d9bdee8afa93efa93a35b2.jpeg

The app also offers detailed statistical analysis of your rounds, including average distances for each club and hit/miss percentages for fairways and greens. These insights can help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your game. Moreover, the health data integration from the Garmin S70 watch is a great addition, allowing you to monitor your physical condition and recovery, which is crucial for consistent performance.

golf_data.jpg.9c81c7b77a96c6814d285b80a19b3a27.jpg

User Interface and Experience
One of the most significant drawbacks of the Garmin Golf app is its user interface. It's not very user-friendly, making it challenging to navigate and manage your data. The app interface feels outdated, especially when compared to competitors like Arccos and GolfShot.

The course layout in the app looks old and relies on drawings rather than satellite images. This can make it difficult to accurately gauge distances and plan your shots. In contrast, competitors provide high-quality satellite imagery, giving a more realistic view of the course.

course_layout.jpg.5e209ef08fe099a0561da162b846ec7d.jpg

Setting up & Syncing Data
The set up of the app is straight forward as soon as you have created your account and logged into Garmin Connect. Syncing data between the Garmin S70 watch and the Garmin Golf app is relatively straightforward, but it can be time-consuming. The process involves connecting the watch to the app via Bluetooth and ensuring both devices are updated. While the synchronization usually works well, there have been instances where data transfer was slow or incomplete, which can be frustrating.

Challenges and Limitations
One of the major challenges with the Garmin Golf app is the post-round shot editing. Editing shots after a round is cumbersome and not intuitive. This process can be frustrating, especially if you need to correct multiple shots. Additionally, the app doesn't provide a detailed strokes-gained analysis, which many serious golfers find essential. Instead, it offers percentages that compare your performance to players of a similar handicap, which might not be as insightful.

shot_edition.jpg.51e23c9e23197d3831d92400510e3af6.jpg

Another limitation is the inability to compare performance with different handicaps. The app only allows comparisons with players of a similar handicap, which doesn't give a comprehensive picture of your progress or areas needing improvement.

strokes_gained.jpg.ec709874fd1cd365758e84c0c8fda49b.jpg

Contribution to golfing experience
Despite its shortcomings, the Garmin Golf app does contribute positively to the overall golfing experience. The detailed statistical analysis and health data integration can help golfers make more informed decisions on the course and improve their overall game strategy. However, the user experience is often marred by the app's outdated interface and cumbersome shot editing process.

Specific features for improvement
I have used the Virtual Caddie and shot tracking features extensively, which have helped me improve my club selection and understand my shot patterns better. However, these benefits are often overshadowed by the app's user interface issues and lack of detailed performance analysis.

Future evolution
I believe the Garmin Golf app has great potential, but it needs significant updates to compete with other golf apps. In future versions of the Garmin Golf app, I would be happy to see:

  1. An updated user interface that is more intuitive and user-friendly.
  2. Integration of satellite images for course layouts.
  3. Improved shot editing capabilities post-round.
  4. Detailed strokes-gained analysis.
  5. Ability to compare performance with players of different handicaps

Recommendation
Given the current state of the Garmin Golf app, I would be hesitant to recommend it to other golfers, especially those who prioritize ease of use and detailed performance analysis. While the app has useful features, its drawbacks can hinder the overall experience. With significant updates and enhancements, it has the potential to be a top contender in golf technology. Until then, golfers may find better value in competitors like Arccos and GolfShot.
However, the recommendation is only based on the mobile app and not the Garmin S70 watch even if they are paired

Pickering Glen - Garmin Review Tournament Scramble (-11)

Well Spies, what a round my group had as we won our yearly guys tournament by 3 Strokes!

IMG_5076.jpg.c7afa7614da2bb81b61674e97f6f8175.jpg

The Garmin definitely helped us achieve this score so let’s get into it.

To start the round my body battery was at 51 and after the round dropped to 33.

5FEF3ADA-F7B9-4A95-889E-FB43C515B131.JPEG.001c5b52240256aaf7584e4f5e176103.JPEG

One thing I was slightly upset with is that I didn’t take score on the watch because I knew it would skew my handicap, but I didn’t know it wouldn’t save my data for the round. I had some really good shots including a 311 drive off the tee and a 250 3iron. It would have been nice to see this data, so beware that if you choose not to take score on the Garmin S70 it will not save the round on the watch and Golf App.

Maybe it was a good thing I didn’t save the score though because within a scramble I play way more aggressive and that would also skew my statistics?

Our front 9 was solid, only 1 hole that we had a little hiccup resulting in a bogey. We played from the tips, so yardages and hazards were really important and the Garmin definitely provided that. A feature I love about the Garmin is the layup up feature. It gives you the yardages to the 100, 150 and 200 layup. This was beneficial to my group and we were doing really well with our wedges and the 100yd shot seemed to be in or favour.

The back nine we really started to play well, as we shot 8 under! On hole 10 I sunk a 45ft putt for eagle and I think that really shifted the momentum for us. The next hole I hit my driving iron 250yds to the centre of the fairway. Having the distance to the end of the fairway from the Garmin definitely let me get a bit more aggressive than usual.

Then, I pulled out quite the crowd for my approach shot:

IMG_4553.jpg.07b0153c37a20dea56f1e09b5ead7d58.jpg

Everyone on my team played well Including myself. I’ve played this course many times, but this was the first with the Garmin. I can’t express how much I love the Virtual Caddy. I usually get the yardage and hit whatever club is in that range, but with the Virtual Caddies assistance I now play according to hazards and green lengths which Ive never done before. Also having the Pin Placement feature really dials in the yardages. The Garmin is definitely making me more confident in my game and I very much enjoy using these products.

On the 18th 3 groups were already finished and accompanied us on the fairway. I had a 127 shot approach and stuck it to inside 10ft, we ended up sinking the birdie putt to finish with a 61. Thank you Garmin for the help!

The watch knows!

My sleep score was very low the night before last. I had an intense work day that was nonstop engaged in meetings that I was leading it in a lead role from 9 to 4.  Arrived at the course at 430, paid and tee’d off no time for warm up what so ever - and I had only hit a few putts over the past two weeks dies to Sunday’s - rain/heat index cancellation.

Slahed it around the first 6 holes with two bogeys coming on theee putts and a variety of playable misses. And then the bottom fell out, block fade behind done teees leading to a double, block fade leading to bogey, block fade followed by a great 7 wood that I thought might creep up on the green only to leave me with this:

My body battery was at 5 walking up to the 16th (7th hole) green.

I got exactly what I deserved /

Question for all testers - @revkev @cburins @CorentinV @NubianRugby and @GolfSpy_APH.

Have you had any issues with the watch sensor rubbing your skin badly on the wrist?

I've had Garmin, Polar, Fitbit, among other watches that had the sensor stick out enough and eventually rub my wrist such that it caused redness and overall discomfort to the point I had to take it off for several days. I don't wear my watch super tight, just tight enough it doesn't flop around. Thanks.

Not a bit. I have worn mine basically 24/7 since (got the watch tan to prove it).

I would say I have to adjust the strap somewhat frequently but that's due to temp changes and my body changing making it tighter or looser.

Does the sensor have any "sharp" edges to it or is it a more smooth transition from where it sticks out?

I don't wear my watch super tight, just tight enough it doesn't flop around. Thanks.

I definitely have this issue too. I don't wear the band tight either and it leaves a ring where the sensor was on my wrist. I've recently be taking the watch off frequently throughout the day.

IMG_0720.jpeg.bbc7ec6931322235fd200cb5aba121fd.jpegI have extremely sensitive skin and do find that I will get a small bit of red marking if the band is not fastened tightly enough. Honestly it hasn’t really bothered me yet. I probably would not have even noticed this if it weren’t for your question. It did get me to tighten the band though. 🙂

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.
