Best or Most Memorable Round

HighFade

Recommended Posts

We just talked about pet peeves and irritants on a round, but let's take the high road - what happened recently, or not-so-recently that made you come away better off, happy, or just really made the round for you?

Here's mine:

A buddy and I were playing our usual Saturday morning round.  On the 6th hole, he was lining up his putt when I noticed I was directly in his eye line (and not because I was holding the flag for him). I took a couple paces to the left to get out of the way.  Something simple, and what I thought was proper etiquette.  He went out of his way to say thanks, and reminded me that's why he liked playing golf with me - I got it. To this day, that is the best compliment on a course I've ever gotten.

I really named this wrong.  It should be more like "Something cool happened to me on this round"

For a few years now, I've had a foursome in a golf outing that benefits a local organization that funds group homes and other activities for the disabled; a relative of mine is a resident in one of their group homes and they've been a blessing to our family.  It's by far my favorite round of golf each year.  It's held at a nice CC; a Tillinghast designed course, and it's a first class operation all the way from the brunch through to the dinner.

My foursome is not particularly talented; we have an 8 HCer, an 11, and a couple of mid-teens, but we manage to play quite well together - I think we've had one bogey in the last two years.  Last year we made nine birdies in a row, this year we had six birdies and an eagle. Anyway, maybe it's because we're really relaxed, participating for the charity, but we play really loose, have a great time, and one of us always manages to make a decent shot.

I can't wait until next year!

I guess the most memorable on I played as far as pure memory and not score was the last 2 I played with my old man about a year before he died. He wanted to play and had not played in about 10 years or so. step mom said when he got it in his head to play he hit 20 or so balls in the field by his house. So I went down and played with him. Now Mom told me the night before to take it easy on him and do not steam roll him. I was playing competitively some at the time so I was pretty sharp. I played from the tips and he insisted on playing from the mids even though he was 80 years old. I did take it easy on him and he got livid after the round. He knew I was dogging it on him. Made me play the next day and I opened up the can of whoopass on him. He said that was more like it. that was the only 2 rounds we ever played that we did not argue and he did not make any comments about my swing or methods. We went to the house that night and I asked if he wanted his clubs in the trunk of his car or the house. He replied to me keep them in your car I have played my last round. He passed on Memorial Day weekend that next year

Recently I played in an unofficial competition run by a couple of Indian guys in my club that they call "The Curry Cup" for obvious reasons.  I also entered the "all day club competition" to make sure the round would be handicapped as I do with every round I play good or bad.

On the 15th Hole a par three and our clubs signature hole I selected an 8 iron for my shot.  I put a good swing on it and made beautiful contact.  Mizuno owners will know what I mean when I say it felt like warm butter.  I watched the ball's trajectory up into the sky arcing toward the flag inexorably and I thought that should be close.  Right as the ball pitched a big drip of sweat dropped into my eye and I cant say I saw the ball drop into the hole.  Thinking it had bounced over the green into the back bunker I hurriedly asked the boys in the group if they saw it and they replied that they had thought it went in the hole but didn't seem convinced.  Sure enough it was and a small happy dance ensued as well as a bit of whooping and hollering.

The most satisfying thing about it was all the know it all members back at the club house who happily informed me that my name wouldn't go on the hole in one board because it was an unofficial competition.  The happy part was informing them that I had entered the daily competition and it would and of course the chance to ring the bell and the club shouted the bar.

A happy day all round.  The competition organiser has a trophy business and made the trophy in the pic for me.

Years ago when I first started I played at an executive course that was about 5000 yards. It had some teeth. I got the chance to play with a guy I forget how old he was but he was easily in the 80's. Still walked. He said he couldn't play 18 because of his age, but still plays 9 regularly. Never once slowed me down. The amazing and sad part was when he confessed he only recently couldn't play 18, he wondered how long until he couldn't play at all because of his physical health. IT wasn't a pity statement but rather one of him trying to convey that he loved the game and wanted to spend as much time golfing as he could.

The other was my dad's hole in one. The events were nuts, we thought he hit the trees, and let a group play through. They found the ball in the hole and everyone at the turn said congrats and shook his hand. That hotdog at the turn was amazing, because he was so shocked at it. Never got the scorecard that day. The golfball has since been lost somewhere, but the memory of him being so shocked and happy is what lives on.
