shailey got a reaction from puttnfool in what is the proper pace of play when it's packed?
If the course is packed, the pro shop just needs to tell people to keep up or you will sit out while others go by.  But if they don't, you just have to tell people, we can't go anywhere, look in front of us and there is a group in front of them.  I'm sorry, it isn't us.
But in my opinion, there is no reason for long rounds at the amateur level even though it happens constantly.  I am a member of 3 courses and one of them I have not played at in a long time because of this.   The last time I played it, there were 5 groups on one hole with a twosome leading it.  We were 1:40 minutes into the round and on the 5th hole.  I was on the tee box with 3 other groups watching them in the fairway.  We yelled at them to move aside, they just completely ignored us.  One of the guys was taking 6 practice swings on EVERY single shot.  We called the pro shop twice from the course and they said they did not have anyone to send out there, they would handle it at the turn.  My family was spending about $750 a month there and they have lost all of it along with a lot of others that were spending a lot of money there.  So they lost the golfers that spend money, not the once a month warrior that tears the course up.
Pace of play is subjective though.  If my 4some is first off, good luck keeping up.  Normal group can easily play under 2.5 hours while all shooting under 80.  I played Saturday with my dad who has leukemia and about to undergo his second round of chemo, an 11 year old child and a beginner (played less than a year) that is the pastor of my dad's church.  We were the first tee time on Saturday.  Those 3 played select shot against me, I played the tips and they played as far forward as they could go.  The longest hitter of those 3 would occasionally get one out there about 200.  We let two groups through (twosomes), stopped at the turn for drinks and still played in 3 hours and 25 minutes.  Every group behind us kept up with us leading it because the starter at that course told every group.  If you don't keep up, we will sit you out.  When I saw the rules, I just laughed and thought, "a lot of people are about to learn that you can play golf fast if they keep up with us".  Enjoy the round, have a beer, burger and enjoy stories and friendships after the round.
Individual tournament play is different, I expect longer times and mentally prepare for it.

    Depends.
Winter Rye or Bermuda - Anything 8 iron and longer, I hit off a tee. Shorter shots, I club up with no tee and try to reduce spin. So I will hit a 3/4 PW instead of 9, etc..
Zoysia - No tee regardless of the distance on a par 3.  We have two par 3s over 230 yards, so either a 4 iron or 4 hybrid.  Sometimes more with the right wind.  The ball sits up quite well on Zoysia and I will already hit it higher on the face and hit it higher.  If I am in between clubs, I always go with the longer one.

First off, I feel compelled to write this because I have never bought a Callaway club in my life.  Started playing in 1979 and have never bought a single Callaway club.  I have tried many.  My dad gave me a Callaway 5 wood and after reshafting it, it has stayed in my bag for nearly 20 years.  But I have never once found a Callaway club that performed well enough to make it into my bag. I hit Taylormade exclusively from 1989 until 2022.  Tried several, but never gamed anything else.
Fast forward to 2024!  After reading reviews, I went into a local store a couple of days ago to try the new Cobra and look at the new Ping.  The Darkspeed and my Aerojet LS were nearly identical in performance.  The Ping was huge and sounded a little odd.  The sales guy suggested the new Smoke Ai triple diamond.  Okay, I will try it, but I am pretty biased against Callaway.  He put a Mitsubishi Kaili White 60x in it and while setting it up, was telling me how you can hit it anywhere and you will not lose as much ball speed as you normally would for the same strike.  So my first swing I could tell was on the toe, but the sound was nice.  Looked up efficiency was 1.49, ball speed 167 and carry was 281 with a roll out of 304. Launch was a couple of degrees lower than normal.  But after all, it is winter and my swing speed is down and I've only played a few times this fall/winter.  Looked at the location of the strike and it was 6mm toward the toe. Swung the next one lined up toward the heel. Strike was 5mm toward the heel and it was 277/296 and 163 ball speed.  3rd shot, I lined up ON the heel and tried to make certain I hit it on the heel.  Strike was 17mm toward the heel and below center of the face.  Ball speed was 151!  Are you kidding me?  I just missed the center of the face toward the heel by 17mm and ball speed was 151?  The ball flew 22 yards off line.  4th shot was 1.5 efficiency, 167 ball speed but 27 yards offline, it started right and stayed on a dead straight line to the right.  Ahhhhhhhhh...my awesome block that sneaks in occasionally.  My 5th and final shot, I lined up normal, hit 1.50 efficiency and ball speed was 168 and a half yard offline with my baby cut that I love to play. Sold! This driver does what they say it does!  I want it! What do you mean you don't have this combo? Okie dokie....Go home find it on the internet.  GET IT HERE!!!!
Yesterday, it comes in. I put it on the scale and it was dead on D4.5 with this shaft at standard length. Ironically, D4.5 is exactly where I put all of my clubs. So I changed out the grip to my go to Tour Velvet Full Cord.  I measured the outside of the shaft and it was at .632, so I added 4 extra wraps of tape and re-weighed it.  It went down to D2.25, so I put a small strip of lead tape on the back to put it right back where it was when hitting it at the store. Bam, right back at D4.5.
This was all while set up on standard specs.  Today, I am going to the course to dial in my settings and trajectory and get a great comparison against my Cobra.  Congratulations Callaway!  After 40 years, I have finally bought a Callaway club.  I'm not selling my Cobra just yet, but we just may do that after today.

In my opinion, you should get fitted once you know you want to continue to play. Most people don't actually practice and get much better. Hey may hit oodles of balls, but never improve much. So at least let the equipment work for you to improve a little and make the game more enjoyable.
If you know you are going to commit to lessons and get better, get a fitting. Buy cheaper used equipment that can be tweaked like forged irons for lie angle. Get steel shafts in all your irons and wedges so you can't over power them and can stay in the same flex for a while and get started with the right size grip. Once you are shooting mid 80s or lower, go get another fitting and buy something much newer OR brand new.

Which is exactly what my fitter did.  I asked about graphite shafts and he said roughly verbatim, “You are pretty young and won’t lose speed for quite a few years”.
which is good news as I just started speed training and since I’m in steel shafts, even with them being regular flex I’m still not overpowering them and I’m up already 14mph compared to my speed when I was getting fit.

He checked my impact for lie angle, measured me for club length.

here’s the actual screen from my stock 7i at the time.

Here’s my 8i at the range yesterday (ignore the 1W I just didn’t change it)

My best memory is simply a shot. I've shot under par many times, under 30 on 9, back to back eagles, hole in ones, played TPC courses, parred 17 from the pot bunker at Sawgrass, all kinds of stuff.
But my best memory HANDS DOWN was in the final round of a local tournament. The previous times I played this course I would hit a high fade over the trees to cut the corner of this short dogleg right par 5. It had a pond right in front of the green, so it was best to go at it with a short iron or you needed to lay up. I aimed just left of the corner to hit my high fade and I double crossed it....pull hook. So instead of having 135 left like the previous two rounds, I was 195 into the wind needing to go straight over the pond.
I pulled 5 iron, my opponent asked, "you going for it"? Yep. Knock down shot into the wind I can stop it.
He actually said, "it's not the wind that's going to get you" and pulled away.
I pulled the trigger and immediately thought it's either close or in the water. It bounced and dunk, right in for a double eagle. I won the tournament by 3. The amount of that single shot.
The course did something nice. Besides winning 1st in the tourney, 1st in the calcutta and a set of Titleist DCI irons, they got me this plaque. He called me a couple of weeks later and told me I forgot something. So a week or so later, I went up there and this plaque was what i "forgot".
That ball is the actual ball as I had put it back in my bag after the shot. It's a Titleist Professional 100.

This is a fun topic.  Enjoy reading everyone’s comments.  I’ll add my top 3:
    1)  My first Hole in One while golfing with my youngest son.  He was on the High School team and we were on the 16th hole of the evening, a par 3 of 158 yards.  Hit just above the hole and rolled ( I was always say spun) back in to the hole.  It was the first HOI either of us had experienced.
    2)  After my late wife passed, I met a lady for coffee and then went out to play a round.  I shot a 78 and was hitting shots even I couldn’t believe.  I thought she must be very special and we married 18 months later.

    3)  Playing Whistling Straits, Pinehurst and Cour d Laine golf courses.  I know that’s 3 courses, but they were wonderful experiences.

Why are you playing the ball you are?  For my game and swing speed, it is the most wind stable while still having great stopping power on the green
What drew you to it in the first place?  I had heard that it was a great wind ball from someone I know and trust.
What made you change from your previous ball?  Hitting them side by side dead into the wind.  I used the same 6 balls (3 of each brand).  Went to #12 tee box and hit them.  Then got in my cart and retrieved them writing down the distance the ball traveled and how far from center they were.  It won hands down.
Do you play a different ball depending on the season or weather conditions? No.  I don't change.
What/Why would make you change again?  Something that played better than what I currently have and had the same feel.
What ball will you never play, and why?  I won't ever discount any ball.  I would try any brand if I thought it would help.  However, I won't play a distance ball.

Here is a video of each club being hit so you can hear the sound. Driver is kind of unique.  I love how it just performs and doesn't draw a lot of attention to itself. Isn't too loud. First one is the 3 wood.
