  1. Per a previous post I was pretty close to calling it quits with the MEZZ.1 as I was feeling like I was having to work to hard to get on with it. As a final stand I thought, I’ll not do anything special at all. No change at all to routine, ball placement, grip, nothing. The last couple of rounds, and especially a quick 9 hole outing this evening, and it actually feels like it might be coming together.

It’s always had a really nice role. But tonight especially the flow of the putter felt like it was natural. And most important, for me, is those 4 footers I felt like I could just step up and confidently knock them in.

Hopefully the tide has turned and the MEZZ.1 can stay in the bag long term. Sure does look like a sexy piece of equipment to complement the rest of the bag!

I hear you.   Based on my brief flirtation with other models today both today I can understand how they aren't for everyone.  Even for someone like myself who has fully bought into the technical aspects the forward press just felt a bit strange.  🤷‍♂️  I also just do not like thicker putter grips...

I will say this though, I do have a friend who did not get along with his Mez for a while.  He spoke to another friend who is an instructor did some work with him and now is completely sold in the Mez Max he has.   I think it's a process for anyone who was a decent putter beforehand.  Like I mentioned im my review it took a lot of time and putts for me to fully adjust.  Hundreds and hundreds of putts.   Food for thought.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve hit hundreds of puts now as well. Both on course and around the house. Messing with different holds/grips and all. The last two rounds I thought “screw it” and decided to just revert to what has been natural for me with any other putter. That was actually better.

The thing that decides it for me is walking up to a 4 foot putt. I want to feel like I can not even take a normal stance and just casually knock that thing in the centre of the hole. If I don’t have that confidence with a putter, bottom line it’s probably not my thing.

What I’ve also found “interesting” is that generally I’d say I have quite a strong arc stroke (though put best with face balance - go figure). With the MEZZ I feel like on short puts I have a tendency to take the putter away on an outside-in sort of path.

I will keep trying for a while longer as I desperately want for this thing and I to be friends LOL

  3. With my L.A.B. experiment I'm evidence that something isn't necessarily for everyone. I've played several rounds now with the MEZZ.1, trying many different grip methods and other things. Also watching all the drills to help etc. And I've still not arrived at a point where I feel like the putter is completely natural and working for me.

Putting has always been a strength for me. But like many on here I'm a gear nerd and had to experience it for myself anyway. But really where I'm at now is a checkpoint moment, where you have to think if you're having to work at all hard to accomodate something it's probably not your thing. To prove that to myself I took out the previous Phantom X 5.5 and confidence was immediately higher, and also statistically based up with Arccos data.

Love the look, the feel, the bag appeal. But it's days in my possession may be numbered.

  4. Had my first time over the weekend where the MEZZ.1 felt as stable for me as I’d been hoping for. Think I’d posted before where I was thinking about having to try different grips etc to find that special thing that works for the individual.

With my previous putter I’d gotten in the habit of pointing my index fingers down the shaft. With the MEZZ.1 I tucked them back in and felt so much better. Now just to have to train myself for that to be the new normal.

Have had multiple people comment on how nice of a roll it puts on the ball, and it is visibly better than my previous putter.

Can't remember.  Did you buy a Link?

It took me a bit longer.   It worked great but I had fits and starts for about a month until I figured out how to sole it properly and get my hands out of the equation.  It was a fair bit of trial and error using a putter mirror.  Like you I struggled from shorter range because I have a penchant for trying to guide those putts to the hole with my hands.   I'd highly recommend some Sam's no thumbs drill.  To help.

I find that I barely have any thumb pressure on the grip anymore.   There's a couple more videos they have (one hand lags) that are also great.

The moment I got comfortable and stopped thinking about the stroke I started knocking them down.  Don't get me wrong I still occasionally miss a short nervy one, but that's mostly because I misread or don't commit.

Pre-putt I do a couple rhythmic swings back and forth to get a smooth feel for the stroke then I lign to my start line, focus on trying to hit a specific part of the cup(  Blade of grass, pin, mark on the back etc) and let it go.  The best way I can describe how I putt with it is that the more I trust the tech to do what it's supposed to the better I putt with it.

Thanks for the share! I’d not seen that one (yet) and there were a couple things in there which was interesting. Obviously the thumbs off. But also having the ball further forward, and having the hands more under.

All good things to experiment with.

Well it's still taking me time to adjust. I may fall into the camp of doesn't work but I did find confidence in the 5 footers but having the DF2.1 which takes up half the distance to the hole (sarcasm). Which model are you using?

I would say it took me about that same amount of time to start to figure it out. That being said, I also spent a decent amount of time on the practice green outside of my normal rounds. I still had moments after the “learning” period where I struggled.

Recently, I’ve been trying to adjust my grip to be much lighter so to let the putter do the work, much like you said. That seems to be helping tremendously!

Thanks very much for the replies. I have the MEZZ.1 model. I’ve tried the light grip pressure and sometimes that feels better, but also sometimes feels like the club is a bit wild.

one thing I was thinking last night is. I usually apply a little forward press just before the takeaway. Due to the shaft already leaning, and the Press grip I’d stopped doing that. Rolling a few inside last night reapplying the forward press felt decent. So might try that on course next time.

  7. How long has it taken for people to get in sync with their new L.A.B putters? I’ve played probably the equivalent of 3 18 hole rounds now and I must say that I don’t (yet) have that feeling of total confidence knocking in a 4 foot put like I’m never going to miss.

I’m consciously trying to be very neutral within my hands to not influence the putters natural inclination to flow towards the target. Guess like all other equipment it might not be for everyone. But interested in what other owners/users might have experienced as an adjustment period.

Do you use a ferrule turning arm? I'm in the same boat with the 1x30 belt and struggle with ferrules. I do use the blue felt belt, but any other tips?

I have a 42” belt so guess it turns just that little bit slower, and therefore easier to not burn the ferrule.

But, yes, I do also have an arm on the machine (Golf Mechanix shaft cutter and ferrule machine) that you can rest the club in. Only modification is that I put some felt in the guides as I found it left marks on steel shafts.

    Technique wise:

    1) You need to keep the ferrule turnng at all times. I use the club head as a leaver to rotate the club at a constant rotation.

    2) I press in a little bit more firmly at the beginning to get the ferrule down flush to the size of the hosel.

    3) Finally I’ll back the ferrule off so that it’s just ever so slightly touching the belt and rotate the club a little quicker. This will usually make the ferrule quite a bit smoother, like a finer sandpaper sort of thing.

    4) Finally use acetone up and down the ferrule, 90º opposed to the way the belt would have been running. This will give the ferrule that high-gloss finish. I use a soft cloth and get it wet and then brush it against the ferrule, with basically no pressure at all. Like you’re lightly dusting it.

You need to let them set for a few seconds for the plastic to re-harden. In the final club cleanup phase I’ll use another soft cloth and rotate the ferrule in it again.

After all that they look significantly better than any ferrule I’ve seen on an OEM finished product.

    Hope that helps.

I recall LAB saying that the Shaft plays a huge role in sound. To my knowledge, myself and all the other testers went with the Accra shaft.

When you do the custom option with LAB both the Steel and Accra are $100 so I don't know why (if you go custom... and given the options I think it is worth it) anyone wouldnt want to go with the Accra shaft.

As for length, I play 35 and that is what it is spec'd for and I would actually say the opposite that it feels longer (which is a nice thing for me)

I would expect that it felt short due to the lie angle. The lie angle is crazy important for these and what makes them tick and work for each individual as a golfer.

The one I saw and tried definitely looked/felt like cost was the primary objective. I mean they’re on the more expensive side to begin with. But even the head cover looked like the cheapest option they have.

I would also 100% go with an upcharge shaft, most likely even the LA Golf option.

And completely agree on the absolute necessity to get fitted for this putter, more so that any other. I mean, bottom line, if the lie angle is wrong for the player then the whole premise of the putter is undermined.

If you send in the fitting video, aside from lie angle, can they also look to recommend the length based on angles?

  10. Wasn’t lucky enough to get selected for this, but came across a person that had one (MEZZ.1) on course and they let me roll a few on the practice green, cause naturally I asked about it 🙂

Couple of things I noticed, and would be interested in peoples comments who have spent time with them.

The length was 34” but it felt shorter, like maybe an inch shorter. Perhaps because of the preset shaft lean due to grip?

The biggest surprise though was it sounded super clicky, like crazy clicky. The putter had the stock steel shaft so would be interested in any confirmation of that from others. But also those that might have optioned more exotic graphite shaft options what their feels and impressions are?

Torden Golf -- I'm pretty impressed with how nice the ferrules look on your set.  I make clubs and struggle to finsih the ferrules, so much so, that I leave them unfinished much of the time.  I use a 32" in belt sander with a linen belt but is takes the ferrule down way too fast, so I just leave them unturned.  A 42" inch belt sander is said to be better for this job but is hard to find, except for Maltby Golf Works, and even then they are expensive as heck for a hobbiest.  Oh well, I just wanted to say how impressed I was with your job.

Thanks very much or the compliment, much appreciated. I do have a 42 inch belt machine, and I guess that just does make it go that bit slower. I also have used the white linen belts and they turn the ferrule down very fast. And also found that little frayed bits form and actually leave a “strike” on the ferrule as well.

I actually use a firm linen belt, just purchased from GolfWorks, and for me I find that to work best. Then a bit of acetone to make them shine.

So if you had the white linen belt I would definitely recommend trying the firm one: https://www.golfworks.com/durabrite-felt-ferrule-turning-belt/p/gm1083/
