  1. I have always liked the ale, but until today I didn't know they made spirits. I must say it is quite tasty. I am not much of a connoisseur and the orange aroma and vanilla finish were lost on me, but the malt and oak is certainly there. I'm not sure what it is, but I thought it had one initial taste followed by something slightly different after it went down. Quite unusual. Enjoyable.
  2. Nice day today so I was going to play golf. I was on the putting green when my phone alarm went off reminding me of a Dr. appt. Crap! No golf! The Dr. says the same thing every visit: Lose weight, do your stretches. So then I went to the store for booze. I said to myself... Self, try something new. What?? Then I saw it. Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey. I am fond of Rogue Dead Guy Ale, so why not? Tasting notes: Dead Guy Whiskey has a fresh orange citrus aroma with a delicately sweet, rich malt complex. Medium-bodied, flavors of oak and honey give way to a clean vanilla finish. I'll let you know.
  3. Most any course can be tough if you are not playing well. Even if you are playing well, the course designers have a habit of making you look bad if you play from the wrong set of tees. Heed PJ advice and move up if you are unfamiliar with the course. More fun. With that said, I find any course that has a lot of elevation change and strong influence on breaks on greens to be extremely difficult. If you are unfamiliar with the course, club selection is hard, and the designer probably gave you a bad area to land in if you used the wrong club. On the greens putting is nearly impossible unless you are familiar with the amount of break inherent in the prevailing slope. Think of the Indio effect in Palm Springs. Mountain courses are really tough. We have a bunch of them here in the Northwest. However, the absolute toughest course for me to play was the Plantation Course at Kapalua. It's a mountain course on steroids, and I will go back!!
  4. Not the Ping. While I was at the Ping fitting in AZ, I determined that their hybrid was not for me. I am currently playing the original TM RBZ hybrids in 3H and 5H. The 5H is fine; the 3H not so much, but it has been better than most other hybrids I've tried, but it's been a year or so. I spent a lot of time with the Ben Hogan hybrids during the forum test, and they weren't for me either. Last year at Demo Days I tried the Cobra (forget which model); it was OK, but not as good as my RBZ. I will certainly try TaylorMade again and maybe Callaway but I have never found a Callaway club that felt good to me since the original Big Bertha driver. I am also considering ordering the Bobby Jones hybrid just to give it a try. I also think that a 21* may be a better option than my 19*. That would allow me to look at adding a 17 or 18 degree fairway wood. I took my 3W out of my bag because I was not hitting it consistently better than the RBZ 3H. I think it is time to re-evaluate the top end of my bag.
  5. I can understand the better accuracy but not more clubhead speed. Put your club in the palm like he says and take it to the top of your backswing and stop. Then while still at the top of your backswing, reposition the club into your fingers of your lead hand. You will notice that you have more leverage angle when the club is in the fingers, and that leads to more clubhead speed. I went to large grips many years ago. I gained accuracy but lost distance. I settled on midsize for feel.
  6. I don't know yet. Headed to the store after golf, so I'll see what I come home with.
  7. Auditions being taken for a 3H. I'm in luck... local Demo Day is March 25.
  8. There is no other reason to play!
  9. The i200 irons are nice. I went through a fitting at Ping HQ in AZ last month and they felt really good. However, they weren't significantly different than my i20's. Not worth the upgrade, but if I needed irons, they would be on my short list.
  10. Seems like it's always cold in Florida, at least when I'm there. It's not my fault this time!! I'm playing at 10am today. Temperature in low 50's sunshine, no wind. Perfect!
  11. There is no way I could ever "drive my right elbow past my belt buckle"!! I think I would hurt myself. At my age if I can get it inside my right hip, I'm happy!
  12. Yeah, that why I said I wonder how many strokes this practice will be worth. I think we all expect that if we practice and practice that we will get up 'n down nearly 100% of the time, and are disappointed that we don't. However, I have seen over the last year that I am flubbing less shots, getting shots a little closer to the pin, and have made a few. Some days are really good; others maybe not so good, but overall I think I'm better. But it's golf... that is the way it's supposed to be!
  13. I really like short game practice. I could probably chip/pitch putt all day long. I think it's because I can be a little creative with different shots. It's kind of odd for an engineer, I know. I only go to the range if I need to work on a specific aspect of my swing. Today I did not hit my driver. Don't really need to and hitting driver more than a few times wears me out. My short game has really improved since I moved to this club last year. My old club did not have good practice areas, and the course conditions were unlike any other course in the STATE!! Didn't do much good to practice there anyway.
  14. Have the cats tried to kill it yet? Ours would!!
  15. I hung around 18-25 for the first few years when I took up golf. I had three big issues. Big slice; bad pitching/chipping, and putting with "hands of stone". I fixed the slice by going to a golf school; I treated it like a vacation. Then short game issues I fixed with lots of practice. I actually like short game work, but hate the driving range. As I got better from 100 yards and in, my handicap dropped quickly. As PlaidJacket said... it's fairly easy to get to 14-18, but all parts of the game have to come together to get down below 10, and I don't think I have the game to get to low digits; just too old. But the process of getting lower keeps me going because I love it.
  16. This morning was pretty nice at 56* and very little wind but rain was forecasted for early afternoon. So I went to the club to practice. I started on the pitching green and hit a variety of shots from 25 and 50 yards; high, low with my 54 and 58 SCORs. I hadn't done this since last fall, but I was happy with the results. Next, I went to the range (I hate range work!) and worked on getting a bigger backswing. I shot my best round on Sunday by focusing on a good turn, and I thought that the winter caused a shorter turn, so let's stretch it out! Hit some nice shots, but had a few mishits. I will be doing this more over the coming weeks. Then I went to the chipping/putting green. First I worked on chip shots with my 54, 50, and 46 SCORs varying shots to different pins. This part of my game was solid last weekend, and today I was still sticking them close. I'll keep riding that horse as long as I can. Finally, I worked on putting from the MGS putting test distance of 5, 10, and 20 feet. The grounds crew mowed the greens early today, and they were pretty quick; just like I like them. Yesterday, the grass was too wet and the greens didn't get mowed. No bunker practice; maybe next time. Overall, I spent 2 hours practicing. It's supposed to be a nice sunny day tomorrow so I'll be playing with the guys at the club. I wonder how many strokes today's practice will be worth??
  17. The dues for GHIN at my club include membership in our Men's and Ladies Clubs. To play in our local weekly events we have to have a validated handicap. Yes, my wife and I could do it by other means, but I find it easy to post scores on the GHIN computer at the club, and my wife and I use it to keep track of our progress throughout the year.
  18. It's time to resurrect this thread since most GHIN scores should be able to be posted again. The Washington State Golf Association opened for posting on March 1. It's been a tough two weeks for me with cold, wet, windy weather and my index jumped to 9.0. I'm hoping the warmer weather will make this old body work better by the end of the month!!
  19. I didn't particularly care for the Mountain course. The Stadium and Nicklaus courses were much better.
  20. It's finally warming up out west. The LOW today is 51 with a high of 67. Now if would stop raining! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
  21. That's why I lived in Bethesda and commuted to Germantown.
  22. So, you listen to "both kinds of music... country and western."
