  1. Played in a scramble this past weekend and on the second hole we were in the left rough with a 40yd pitch shot. A couple practice swings and we all had a face full of water and grass. A quick swipe with the hand was all I did, although I remembered some testing from here or TXG that showed what a wet face does to the spin. Needless to say, all four shots ran out further than we would have liked. This will definitely be on the top of the try out list when the current wedges are retired.
  2. When I was a caddy we were taught that you always stand on the right side of the tee. Ignoring the fact that a few lefties play the game, this puts everyone in the view of a right handed golfer so they don't have to be wondering if there is someone wandering around behind them while they are swinging. I am trying to think of preshot routines that I have seen, and I can only think of swings down the target line or swings while facing the target, which would be right at a group standing on the left side of the tee (unless the swinger is back from the tees far enough). Standing on the right should be out of the way for everyone, unless there is a lefty there to throw everything off. Now, if I was facing the target and there was a group on the left, I would make sure to move somewhere so I am not laying sod on the front of their new golf outfits (that is an admission that I might on "super rare" occasions have a practice swing that might have missed a ball entirely).

But my understanding is that it is easier to control turf interaction with a thin soled blade than a shovel sized SGI iron (theoretically). Now Matty looks pretty close to a human robot swinging, so his ability to work a ball is better than a good portion of golfers. And if turf interaction has anything to do with it, hitting off a mat isn't going to do anything to differentiate one iron from another. Their conclusion was that it IS a myth. Maybe the cavity back they used isnt so far into the SGI category to show much if a difference. Some iron are made to be alt-right, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were a little more difficult to co troll flight in every which direction.
  4. which ones are top right going for 749????????
  5. Didn't get to hit any balls into the water during a weekend camping, so I decided not to waste any more time with these in my possession and put them into play during our 3 club challenge in couples league. I was planning on 6i & PW with a putter for the executive course, but with seeing as I had a 6i and 9i in the PTx Pro, I thought, why not? The par 4's were no longer than 340 and the par 5 is only about 450yds so I could get to everything in regulation. I ended up shooting within one of my personal best. I had a 120yd par 3 that I stuck right in the middle with a super choked up open face 9i and I hit a green with a choked up open 6i that I haven't hit all year with a full 7 or 8. Of course I couldn't sink the birdie putts but had tap in pars. My only real issue was on the par 5. I was just over in 3 but had a "flop shot" out of the rooty rough to a very downhill green that I chunked with the 9i then afraid of another chunk I bladed it past the hole and two putted for a bogey. Nothing about ball flight seemed higher than with my PTx with the C-Taper Stiffs. Flight is still pretty low and I get some runout on the greens. It isn't terrible by any means, but some higher spin might be able to help me out. A recent launch monitor session with some questionable spin data showed most of my irons at about (Iron #)*1000-1000 for spin. My understanding is that I could raise the spin by 1000rpm and still be ok. Is the Tour 90 Stiff shaft the best option for this? The Lamkin Z5 Standard grips were nice. The butt end seemed a lot fatter than the ZGRIPS I have on mine. I will have to pull out the micrometer to check this. I wasn't lost without the ALIGN feature. In fact, on some of the choke down and open up shots I was probably better off without it. Am I in the market for these? Don't think so. I just potentially solved a putter problem during lunch hour, so any other new clubs are surely off the table for the rest of this season. But I do like them, and love the black finish.
  6. I just received a demo set of the PTx Pro. I had a short window when they were available with the KBS Tour V X shafts. They got to salt lake city 1am saturday morning but didn't show up at my door until 1hr before golf league tee time monday afternoon. So no use last weekend and we are camping from Wednesday to sunday this week. I snuck out during lunch on tuesday to hit a bucket. First impressions were good. If I hadn't seen specs beforehand, I would have guessed less offset than the ptx. I was also concerned about the thick topline. I didn't think it was as offensive as it looks to be in some of the stock photos. I THINK I was getting a slightly higher ball flight than with my C-tapers, but being in a rush and windy conditions I would hold off any judgement on that. I will post some address photos when I get back.
  7. This was my most frustrating average round in recent memory. My first putts on the front were leaving me with too many 5 ft comebacks (or still to get there's). For the most part I escaped and was pretty happy with how the front nine went. On #10 tee, I realized it was pretty hot out there. And I was walking on a course that must have 3 miles of green to tee paths. The putter quite clearly gave me two number one's (or was it one eleven?) right out of the gate after the turn. None of those too long second putts fell. An 81 shouldn't really feel that bad, but when the driver and irons are working that well, it is a shame to throw it all away putting like that. On the bright side, the ZGRIPS played really well in the heat. At no point did I wish for more traction in the sweaty heat. I still don't think I would have tried them if it weren't for the test for the forum, but I can't argue with how they are doing.
  8. How was Crater springs? I haven't played there yet. Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  9. I can't compare the XV to the Z Star, but I really like how the XV feels on the putter. I played the Snell MTB before and it felt like mush off my Elevado putter face. The XV feels soooooo much better. I reached into the bag and grabbed another Snell after a few rounds with the XV and putts were really short. I had a sample pack if the Mizunos and the X had the same feel off the putter. But I scarred the mizunos within a few shots. The Srixons last as long as I can keep them out of the bushes. 10. There have been comprehensive reviews on each of these on this forum. If you search for them, you could probably read for over an hour to see the pros and cons of each. Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  11. I like the upper grip of the ZGRIP and the lower of the UTx. So far the firm lower of the ZGRIP hasn’t bothered me. I am really curious how I like it once we hit 100deg where the hands will never quite dry off. Without knowing that for sure, and if you are saying the whole set MUST be the one grip, I would go with the UTx. I think the reminder on the SW and LW would be really annoying. 12. I love these tips @chisag!! How do we put in requests, or are these just spur of the moment? I have a friend that wants to play well so bad, is taking lessons, but has one of the worst reverse pivots I have ever seen that doesn't seem to be getting better one bit with the lessons. I want to help him so bad, but hate giving un-requested advice. I have asked what drills his coach is giving him, and all he can tell me is a ball under the outside of his right foot. If I were to describe this swing, it would be close to no shoulder turn but a massive hip slide back on the backswing and forward on the downswing. This results in a club sweeping across the ground for what seems like 3ft and a clubface that must be pointing at the right teebox marker by the time it gets to the ball. I don't know how he even gets the clubface on the ball. Tip of the day - 7???
  13. I will second Soldier Hollow. I have heard the Canyons is another quirky one. Its built right around the ski resorts and has some pretty wild elevation changes. Some of the holes I have seen look like they go back and forth on terraces cut into the side of the mountain. Mountain Dell won't break the bank and is close in Parley's Canyon. It might not be hosting the US Open soon, but is an interesting course. Don't plan on walking unless you run a half marathon every morning. There are quite a few great courses 30mins away in the valley. Most will be <$50 with a cart. I have the Utah Golf Association passbook that has discounts at many places. If you are going to play during the week, there are plenty of good deals using that. Let me know the dates you plan to play and I can look into what is available with the book.
  14. Thanks guys! I managed to get a 32 hour birthday, but most if it was crammed in sardine class. Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  15. If you can pronounce any of this in a yooper accent, then I might be in Marquette. At least three people in the family did mention that they paid a lot to fly halfway across the globe only to end up in the UP. Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  17. I'm in Helsinki right now. One of the first things I thought about after seeing the landscape around here is this golf course. It's no wonder the Finnish settled up there (or down there, I suppose). Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  18. How much would you say firmness plays into your rating of tackiness? I am trying to rate the ZGRIP vs the UTx in the Golf Pride review. I would say the ZGRIP is "grippier" but I think the firmness (with the ZGRIP being near the extreme side of firm) doesn't play in its favor when I rate tackiness. The UTx is just soft enough that I don't have to hold on for dear life to take advantage of the texture of the grip. I suppose these are all related with one another (like feel and sound of a golf ball). I had one Z5 plus (tour taper) that I was going to use in the comparison as well but it fell out of my bag at some point. Hopefully someone is enjoying that somewhere.
  19. It's two hours of coverage of the final day of arguably the biggest league of the inarguably most popular sport in the universe. So this conflicts with early fourth round coverage of a PGA tournament that most big names have skipped. Probably a good call by NBC. Sent from my SM-A600A using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  20. The writing on the blog has to be miles above any place else. There is not one writer where I see the name and think, "yeah, I'll skip it". 98% of every other news story about new gear is 98% copy and paste from the manufacturer website. The new release articles and the forum member reviews are what makes MGS so great, even if the Most Wanted tests are what garner the most attention. So well done Barbajo!
  21. There are Hogan branded balls all over their club photos and they don't appear to be 30 years old. I would think something would have to be coming out this year. We know who to ask to be sure, but he keeps secrets too well.
  22. Got my form, so I'll be rooting for Rory as well. Why does this promotion happen? The number of people that buy it and keep it anyways can't outnumber the people that will buy and return or get the form with no purchase. Did someone in the order chain accidentally add an extra zero somewhere so there is a warehouse somewhere full of these? I'd like to think I would win a $500 driver, but I am thinking it will be worth about 50 by the time the market is flooded with these. Are the chances of Rory winning really that low that TM would risk this?
