I want to know what driver is going to be in your bag (or the longest intended driver) for 2024?

Is it old faithful from years past? Did you just pick up a new one that is going to be your gamer?

Let's hear it! --- even better show us what driver is in your bag!?

I'm going to ride with the Callaway Rogue ST Max. Old faithful. I am planning to try the AI Smoke, but the Rogue has treated me well. 🙂

5 swings is the max you should take.  This plays out in a fitting as well;  fitters should only let you take 3 to a max of 5 swings with a club to prevent you from changing your swing to make the club work.   The Wilson fitting system; like the mizuno shaft optimizer, has you take a few swings and they measure aspects of your swing.  Those results are compared against what others were fit into to give you a starting point. Then you hit the recommendations and see of the work and feel.   One of the potential advantages is that it helps reduce the number of swings you need to take to get fit which means you are not fatigued when you get to the end of your session.   You like old fashion;  this means you have a fitter who sees you swing and gets numbers from a launch monitor or ball flight and then based on experience gives you something else to try which continues until you get to a good combination.   The Wilson system is no different except the knowledge is stored in a larger more comprehensive database and not in someone's head so you get to the good combinations faster.

Thanks, makes sense. Just something I need to try and see how it goes. I'm sure the confidence will change if it's a great experience. It certainly makes sense with the incredible amount of data that is available now with trackman, arccos and the like.

I have Srixon's and so many manufacturers leave us Lefties out of a lot of choices.  I wanted the Utility Iron in a 2 and they don't offer it.  Also was really interested in the Z forged II's and not available.

I will say it has gotten a lot better over the years but still a long ways off.  The Wilson Staff MB/CB look awesome but no left handed yet.  I'm hoping that changes.

It does seem crazy that at this point in time we still get left out on some items. I had to get a Cleveland Gap Wedge because Srixon doesn't make it in LH.

I got to hit a demo gen 1 zx5 and it was phenomenal. Going to do a fitting in a few weeks to try out a bunch of stuff but those are the leader in the clubhouse

I love the Srixon irons. I will say the Wilsons have caught my eye. I was fit for my Srixons in March of 22'. I was excited when I heard they were doing them in black, only to find out not for the lefties! 🙂 I'm eager to see if they do anything new in 2025. I have also considered a mix set with the ZX7 or even 4s. I didn't hit the others in 22'. Fell in love with the 5s instantly.

To me it seems like it would be a quick and accurate way to get a good fit based on your swing compared with zillions of other real people's swings and their ideal outcomes, and it has fantastic potential. I need to check for this at the place I want to visit. I don't know if they carry any Wilson.

I guess I was thinking 5 swings wasn't enough, but maybe with the 10s of 1000s of swings they have collected the AI is pretty good. I wouldn't rule out trying it. I am somewhat old fashion in my thinking. Want to see it fly and have someone tweaking things for me.

I’m intrigued in the process and going to try and get out to the local shops that have the ai fit. Like you I’m not necessarily in the market for new irons, but I’m also glancing at the Srixon Zx 5 mkii and now the dynapower forged are on my radar as well.

Put money on you loving the ZX5s.

  7. Just curious if anyone has had a set of irons coated. I found a place in Fort Mill, SC. I was thinking about having my ZX5s done, especially since Srixon won't do the black irons in lefties. The cost seems reasonable. My concern is what it might do to the performance. I am assuming that they have to take the heads off, coat them and then reassemble the clubs. They also offer resetting all of the lies and lofts, and cleaning up dings and scratches. Any experience out there? Thanks!

Wilson D9 forged, or CB.  Both made for those of us on the right side of the ball.  Price and performance all bundled together.   Ping and Srixon both are good about making lefty sticks too.  I've heard great things about i230 and ZX 5/7.

I have the ZX5 and they are so good! Cannot recommend them enough. I was fit for them and they stood out over everything I touched. Feel and performance were better than the rest.

Thanks for the review. I am looking at getting a range finder and not sure where to and what to get.  I have one I use now but its more for hunting than golf. I find my current one is really hard to catch the flag which makes sense to me as this isn't the purpose for the type I have. I am a GPS guy on the course but have come to find I am liking the range finder a bit more. One big reason is my eyesight has diminished that I need reading glasses to read my GPS. I don't like having to put them on and off for every shot especially for finding yardage to hazards or or just a random yardage to the middle of the fairway when I'm in the trees.

Thanks again, if you have an update on this unit, I'm interested in knowing how it's been with a few months use and durability.

Update - I used it all last fall and winter. Played several rounds already this year and it is still working like a champ! No issues. The other comments from the testers matches what I have seen.

There are a few threads detailing individuals paths to getting better.  Some want to break into the 80s,  some want to be single digit, some are trying to achieve scratch golf,  I am trying to get to the low single digits.  I thought it might be a good idea to report on my progress and what I am doing to play better golf;  hopefully someone finds it interesting; if not it will just be my own blog that I can use as a reference.  🙂

    About me:

I have been playing golf on and off since I was in my early teens but stopped and started many times since then.  Finally started to play regularly in the 90s which happened to be roughly where I was scoring.  Took a bunch of lessons and worked my handicap down to a 4 in roughly the 05-10 timeframe and shot a personal best 70 and have about a dozen rounds of 71/72.   Over the last 5/6 years my game has been going the wrong direction and scores that were typically mid 70s are now low to mid 80s.   My short game was a big mess and after a lesson last year it has started to get better but still needs some improvement.

I play with a regular group weekly and play in my companies golf league.  My recent golf league results are what really set this journey forward.   We play 9 holes in league play and my last three rounds have been +15, +14 and +9 and I know I can play better golf.   As a result,  I reached out to my instructor and said I wanted to get better at the game.

    How I think:

For those reading these posts,  this is probably an important thing to understand.   I really like to understand the details and learn as much as I can about a subject.   I did this with putting;  I found a coach that helped me understand how the putting stroke works and how my decisions impact the stroke.  I learn the mechanics but move toward the feel side of the scale when actually playing.  Now,  my goal is to learn more about the golf swing and strategy to playing better

    Initial Goals:

    • Get my scoring average to 75
    • Break 70
    • Improve course strategy
    • Improve approach game (struggle with pull hooks, toe shots, and fat shots)
    • Improve short game (still isn't where I want it to be)
    • Improve distance wedges
    • Improve iron distance control (in between distances)

    Initial assessment:

I went for an initial swing assessment on the 20th.  The assessment we did is based on Mike Adams swing dynamics.   I learned about Mike Adams last year on an episode of the Golf Channels Swing Expedition with Chris Como.  Essentially you go through a series of tests and based on the results of those tests it determines how you should swing.  This assessment includes what your swing pivots around,  grip (strong/weak, over, under, side),  swing plane,  stance width,  etc.    For the way I process things,  it was ideal.   Based on this assessment, I am a front post, side-on grip and release, launch.spin golfer.    Once this was determined,  we went through a series of drills to help work on ingraining the feels and to work on ground impact location.

    Early results:

Since the assessment,  I have played 2 rounds and done a couple of most wanted testing sessions.  The approach seems to be working;  I have been making more centered contact, less fat shots, and narrowed shot dispersion.  It is interesting that my short game has shown significant improvement over the last two weeks as well.    Last two rounds have been 79 and 80 and the swing changes seem to be a step in the right direction.

    Future plans:

Obviously I will continue to work on the practice drills.   Since iron testing is getting under way at MGS,   I will be hitting lots of iron shots a couple of times a week.    From a lesson perspective,  it looks like I will be doing one in-person lesson a month and a couple of online lessons per month to answer questions, check on drills, and develop course strategy.

I know I am late to the party, but very interested to follow your journey. I have always thought the Mike Adams approach was intriguing. From time to time his stuff pops up, but you have ignited the interest again. I'm curious where you found someone to do the assessment on your swing. Thanks

You probably need to provide more info.   What are the distances between the mevo and the ball and the ball and the net?  Are the mevo and ball at the same level?   Maybe a picture of your setup.

I have it at 8' from the ball and maybe6-7' ball to net. I adjusted the height to what I thought would take into consideration the height of the mat. I can try to get a picture in the next day or so. Thanks

My contribution is to fess up to picking up a used Mevo from a fellow Spy.  I never had seen one in person and I was surprised how small the unit is.  Hit a few shots into the net before the thunderstorm rolled through and i can tell this will be fun!

So I’m thinking first step is to replace current 13.5 3W with a 16.5 (Titleist) or 17 (TM HL)

from there is gets dicey.  Thinking a 5 wood is likely dumb.

    7W?

2H and 5H?  Like to have something with a little better control into long par 3’s

My suggestion would be to work with a professional fitter on the gaps. In general the 5H should be easier to control - higher loft. Say a 25 degree versus the 21 or 19 degree hybrid. Same thinking as the 7W versus the 5. Regardless, the gapping is important and relates to what's the highest iron you want to carry.

The ball test in '19 is what drew me to MGS and I've loved going through the '21 data and discussing it on the Ball test thread. I wanted to start a new thread for everyone to share what they are going to do with the data they received.

So, what is your next move after reviewing the '21 ball test data??

For me, I'm going to try out some of the Vice Pro and Pro Plus. I fall right in between Mid and high swing and although my current gamer Snell MTBX faired well, it was not a standout like last year. Although I think ProV1x left dash would be a good fit, I'm not willing to pay the price at this point, so I like to look at the more premium budget (DTC) options. I've posted this elsewhere but this ball test showed that you really need to find the ball that is best for you, your equipment, and your game. I think Big Box stores should start offering ball fittings for a small price that can be applied when you buy 2 or more boxes of balls.

Great thread. I have tried several balls out this summer and was looking forward to the latest testing. I did a Vice sample box, The Snell sample box and the maxfli tour. I bought more of the Vice Pro Soft after looking at my notes and seeing the test results. I like the Snell as well and realize they are very different. My swing speed would seem to fit with the Pro Soft or Pro. I'm in search of my ball 🙂 . I do think the testing helps direct you. I am also not interested in paying for the Pro Vs.

Circumstance is a little different in my location.  The fitter is a regional traveling fitter.  He has a rotation for his region.  One of the disadvantages of living in a smaller area of the state.  I have no doubt they will be more than helpful figuring the issue out.

I had the same situation. Regional fitter. Great guy and I have no doubt they will be happy to help. In my case it might mean a trip to Atlanta, but that's not a disaster. Good luck with the whole thing. You have inspired me to look into the same situation. I have been working on my swing plane and definitely making changes (hopefully for the better), so I know an adjustment will be needed.

  16. Thought I would share a quick review on the Precision Pro Golf NX7 Pro Rangefinder. I was looking to add a rangefinder this year but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on my first one. This one might be good enough to be my first and last. As a starter, I paid $179.99 for the rangefinder. This was with a $20 coupon or 10% off. I thought that was a pretty good price for what seemed to be a pretty good device (based on reviews). Here are some pictures of the device and the carrying case hanging on my golfbag. So, I also included a picture of the cards that came in the box. One to highlight that they give free battery replacements and two - I thought one othe other cards was cool. It was a little tutorial on the proper way to use the device. I know, seems obvious enough...... aim and click until it vibrates. All true, but it did mention scanning across the flag which seems to help. Anyway, to the point of the review......

I have used the rangefinder on my home course now for 5 rounds. The accuracy is there and it is very easy to use. You do simply align and push on a button on the top (green), it vibrates and gives you the yardage. If you have the slope on it gives you the adjusted yardage in the bottom right corner. The device itself appears to be robust yet light in weight. Not too light - meaning it is easy to hold steady and get a hit on any target. I shot it on bunkers, bushes, trees and even a bird house just checking it out early on. (We have bird houses at 150 yards from the greens on our course). The carrying case is legit and it comes with all you need to snap it on to your bag. I have played this course for close to 30 years, so it was very interesting to compare my learned knowledge on slope versus the actual measurement. It's amazing to see the actual number and know that even though a hole looked flat and you learned over the years to hit one extra club. Then to shoot it and realize it is about 8-10 yards uphill. Pretty cool. It does give you a lot of confidence to confirm some of that and then know you are pulling the correct stick. I'm eager to play with it on a course that I don't know very well.

The only negative I can think of is the lack of a magnet to allow for you to stick it on the cart. Easy enough to drop it in the cupholder though for an easy grab.

I hope if you are looking for an affordable rangefinder that you find this review helpful.

With another major on the calendar the contests are in full swing again. Lots of cool stuff currently up for grabs, but what is the one golf item you would most want to win? For me those Callaway Staff bags are the coolest thing going and of all the contests I enter that would be the one I would most want to win. How about you?

Wedges or a range finder. Nice bag though.

  18. Just wanted to add some pictures of the clubs. Sorry I haven't posted any other comments. I have been really working on my game. The clubs are fantastic and I have noticed a difference. There is obviously the adjustment period (I was playing Callaway Apex Pros that were 1" shorter than they needed to be). I still plan to get around to doing a side by side comparison with a launch monitor. Just might be early fall. IMG_1484.jpg.3f8bafb5c0b0776bb40c68a2903d3a5a.jpgIMG_1485.jpg.4060652ac65a003934a74b25b53ab840.jpgIMG_1486.jpg.61388cbe8d8973acb7d63c35da42ccf3.jpgIMG_1487.jpg.b4815e1c9292f5d49dd0e9cb2ba44d0f.jpgIMG_1488.jpg.3ca32cf8b5e2b155d00a9b298463f2e8.jpgIMG_1489.jpg.854df04059d116f6040c5ee7bbeff6da.jpgIMG_1490.jpg.14ce9657206d17e26f05ce7cf542de0f.jpg

If you have the ability, would you be willing to throw up some numbers from either your fitting or after you get the new setup? I think A LOT of people would be curious on the numbers from your old clubs vs. the new fit. Looks like in the mid-handicapper range, you would have a great example of the power of being fit for clubs! I'd also love to see a long term review to see what happens with your handicap as you use them as your gamers!

Absolutely, I don't have the fitting numbers, but I can do a comparison and will certainly share my results as the season moves along.
