Date 10/10/2023 Course Name Sulphur Springs Country Club Gross Score 76 Course Handicap 9 Gross Strokes over/under par 4 Net Score to Par -5 Net Score 67 Net Birdies or better 11 Longest Drive 267 A rare Monday round this week. Since today was a holiday, the club was open. There were 19 players in our group yesterday, and there was a lot of talk about playing early. I was all for it since I had a meeting today, but it was at 9 pm. So we set up 4 tee times starting at 8 am. Only 2 of us showed up. We were the first players of the day so we finished our round in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

We played match play, and I had a rollercoaster of a round, but so did my opponent.  -11 net birdies or better. I had 6 actual birdies while in the same round had 4 bogies and 3 doubles. A double on 9 left me -$5 at the turn in a seesaw match. We went in to hole 14 I was 2 down, but a birdie there brought it back to 1 down. I hit a horrible drive on 15 that went off the toe and went further right than it did forward and caught a lot of flack, until his tee shot was worse than mine. Then on the last three holes I had  2 incredible up and downs and a finishing hole birdie meant I had a $10 bill extra in my pocket when it was all over. It was a lot of fun.

I will say that on 18, after driving through the fairway and into the water on Sunday and earlier on 12 I went through the fairway and into the water again, so I decided to lay up with a hybrid. I hit a horrible shot that duck hooked about 60 yards and then miraculously bounced and rolled another 150 yards down the cart path leaving me in a great position to hit the next shot to 15’ and sank the putt.

Anyway felt good playing instead of hitting into my net, greens had been rolling well after aeration. made some good recoveries and also a few bad shots. A good day over all.

That’s a really good point. If you don’t use one there is no reason you must use it. You might find a GPS watch like a Garmin or something more helpful for simply getting yardages rather than fussing with “aiming” a rangefinder. You’ll get front/middle/back distances and other good stuff much more easily.

I've been playing on and off for that long and have adapted to embrace some of the technology.   Others,  I just find too distracting;  I don't like playing with my phone but a GPS or rangefinder isn't bad.

I guess playing 43yrs has a lot to do with it, I feel more comfortable going old school than high tech. I will probably eventually move forward, but right now my game is where I want it to be, possibly once I start declining and double guessing myself then yes will put my rangefinder to work.

I been playing for 43yrs and find that I play my best when I don't use any modern technology, to many times I see younger players whip out a rangefinder or their phone to get a yardage.
What do you think? Does it actually help you in the grand scheme of things?

I can use my eyes as a general guide and do okay. However there is little doubt in my mind that taking the 10 seconds to shoot the flag or front or back of the green has helped my game immensely. The course I play are decent with marker placement, but due to angles and large greens distances can be off as much as 20 yards with how things are playing. That's a pretty big guess and the rangefinder eliminates that.
I will say I am practice and more than half the time I shoot the flag and my Ball ahead of time do I am walking up to the ball with the club I need in hand.

I wear a Garmin GPS watch and refer to it for distances to the front, middle and back of the greens as well as to hazards, bunkers, etc. There is a PrecisionPro laser rangefinder in one of the pockets of my push cart bag, but I rarely (and I mean EXTREMELY rarely) pull it out to shoot a distance on the golf course. In my last six to eight rounds of golf over the last month or so, I don’t think that I have pulled out the rangefinder one time.
The only time that I find it necessary to use the rangefinder is when there is a severe elevation change or a semi-blind shot where I can only see the top of the flag, or when I want to get a distance to a tree or the edge of a water hazard that is not clearly shown on my GPS watch.
Since the use of the slope function is strictly prohibited in competitive play, I think that it is much better to be able to estimate accurately how much of an effect that the elevation change between you and your target will have on your shot and select your club accordingly. Add or subtract from this (or add to to it) the effect that a front or back pin will have on your shot, and you are good to go.
I absolutely hate it when a golfer finds it necessary to shoot every distance with his rangefinder two or three times (not just to flags and hazards, but also to every tree, bunker, bush, etc.). This is one of the primary reasons for agonizingly slow pace of play in golf.
