  1. ..and hence my self-assigned Handicap
  2. Played a Par 3 yesterday afternoon .. one that's great for wedges and short irons (most holes are PW, 9i or 8i for me) .. trying to focus on key things from my recent lessons, including better golf posture during the takeaway and better movement towards the target on the downswing. First swing was straight but short; next bunch of holes the tee shots (off of mats) were going the right distance but way left of where I thought I was aiming and lined up to... So I had lots of chances to practice my secondary objective = trying to get up and down more often. Chipping was pretty much on-line but too often further longer or shorter of the hole than 3 ft, and then too often did not sink the first putt (though they were all pretty close .. except one where the sprinklers had just been on so I'd thought the wet green would be slower and I ran the first putt waaay past the hole!). Last few holes was able to straighten out the shots though still was short or long of my intended targets. Overall feel like I'm making some progress in my game - despite not really scoring any better - but am (generally..) hitting the ball more solidly and feel like I'm starting to gain a bit of control over distance and direction
  3. Thx for that last update. It looks like an interesting glove, and my wife likes the mesh-backed ones so I got her one to try; she seems to be tough on gloves so we'll see how long hers holds up.
  4. Hey, sorry this reply is delayed just saw the post...... Briefly the Compact .. yes, can allow you to swing indoors .. but is more oriented towards simulating an iron swing vs a longer full swing like with a driver. I feel it's a great companion to the full length OW Trainer, and I use mine a lot as I'm currently focusing on improving my iron game. The Compact has the same construction and materials so it looks and reacts similarly to the longer trainer, and it can definitely help you work on tempo, timing, balance, positions/movements, etc. .. just, again, in a shorter swing arc vs a driver/wood type swing. But if it's that or nothing I'd say go for it!!
  5. Thx! And thx for reading .. yeah making progress .. but .. have to keep telling myself to be patient and to keep doing the drills. The golf swing is hard dammmmit! Pete's is a good suggestion, thx for that - will keep it mind for the future. I just .. literally in the last few days .. extended the GolfTec lessons as I'd accumulated some referral credits so wanted to use them. But def making a note of Kirk's name
  6. Thanks! ...but that's still just a practice swing .. we'll see over time how much I can translate all of it to the course...
  7. Visual comparative.... ..then... First GolfTec lesson 2019-11-05 ... too much movement, excess backswing and swaying off the ball... ..and now... Most recent lesson (to date) 2020-09-04 ... making some progress - the drill here is to bump into the black cylinder at the start of the transition... (..si la mascarilla es muy annoying )
  8. Wasn't me but I tell ya the winner better be able to drink a boatload of beer!!
  9. Going in later today for the second lesson with my new coach (the one I started with retired) ... and what was most interesting about our first lesson together was he quickly focused in on a few basic fundamentals, that either I'd not been properly taught before or had totally forgotten about / moved away from (the more likely scenario LOL!). For example, he showed me a still frame from the DTL vid cam showing my setup and asked me where my weight in my feet was -- and (even I could see LOL again!) it was clearly back in my heels, with too-straight knees plus a hunched-over back ... all in all a pretty bad combo for trying to make good contact with the ball. Showed me a good trick to use to help set up more consistently, too. We also worked for a bit with a rubber kickball between my arms (larger than a Tour Striker Smart Ball; which I have and am now practicing more with!) to get the feel of using the body relatively more to power the swing and to reduce the "hit" on the ball with (relatively more) arms, wrists and hands. Yes - they're important also but he wants me to get me to improve my transition and weight shift before even thinking about more power (Tim Allen har harr ). Had a good range session earlier in the week trying to focus on these things - setup, balance, better arm "structure" - and had some good results but I can see it's gonna take me a while and a lot more work to apply all this good stuff out on the course...........
  10. It's not #TBT but somehow the poll for this thread appeared... So, imho, anyone can publish a set of specs and some LM numbers. One of the main .. if not the .. highlight that drew me into this site is the real-person subjective reviews - that's what helps me understand if some new thing may be a good fit for me or not.
  11. Not well.... One of my higher scoring rounds in a looooong time. Put myself into trouble off the tee, had trouble on the second shots and most disappointingly had a lotta trouble putting. There was a bright spot, though -- had a few punch outs and recovery shots, and one short approach, with wedges that I hit pretty well. Have another lesson scheduled for tomorrow!
  12. An FYI update, re: Practice Summary Screen ... Here's a good example of one of the things that bothered me in Practice mode - after you're done rolling putts, you can exit to the main menu or click the "Menu" button on the remote to access the Practice Settings then arrow down to "Finish" and click OK to get to the Practice Summary screen..... Here I hit a total of 75 putts (that number does not show anywhere) with a lot of makes in the "0-10" range (it's actually = 5-10 feet; but the makes number does not show anywhere) and you can see moving to the right more misses / fewer makes at each longer distance category ... and a corresponding larger dispersion of misses (yeah had a string of real short misses in there...). In the accompanying text on the left of the screenshot you can see they suggest .. "Focus practicing on the weak targeted distance" .. which in this example looking at the dispersion plots appears to be the "20-30" distance, yet -- the system's calculated "Distance Deviation" for the "20-30" distance category is actually a smaller value (in absolute terms) vs the "10-20" category which has a smaller dispersion pattern. So ... what is this "Deviation" number telling us...???* *PS: as a former math geek I know the technical answer but my question is oriented towards common-sense, easy to understand, "actionable intelligence" for all golfers.
  13. Hah, thx! But (and dare I admit here within this thread!) the real magic bullet for me is more lessons ... next one is this coming Friday!
  14. NICE!!! Use it in good health Looks like the bag sits really upright in there - that's a nice feature!
  15. And in a classic club 'ho move... ordered a new set of irons during a summer sale - untested and .. yes .. unfitted-for (..i know, i know .. maybe next season...) ... and to top it off, put 'em into the bag and started playing them - no range preview, no side by side test vs the incumbents. I've been liking the new irons, but wasn't 100% confident in my impulsiveness, and finally got both sets to the range yesterday - and quickly decided that I'd actually made a good equipment decision for once! Old: Apex CF16 New: PXG 0211 Interestingly, the stock specs (L-L-L) are identical (offsets differ slightly) but the 0211s are a little more GI which is what I need. Yes, I saw a little more distance with them but the biggest positive comparison was the dispersion - the 0211s with the MMT shaft (stabilized tip) seem to be way, way better for me. Also feel like I have a little more confidence with the 0211's 6i, so we'll see if I can start hitting that one effectively out on the course.
  16. The not subtle/direct approach: ..email or text her a link My wife still insists on getting me some "cute" (she thinks) golf gadget for Christmas but now knows that I'm particular about the hard goods .. so we started the same she does with her kids is we send her a link to the desired (coveted ) item.................
  17. Sadly had a similar round the end of last week... Behind a group of 4 middle-aged men - LOTTA very serious practice swings on every tee box, which they insisted on standing at the very back of every time even though several times one or more of them did not clear the forward tees, LOTTA time standing over each and every shot and then....... And then... ..then they get to the putting green.
  18. Glad you mentioned all that - in a funny coincidence, I was going to post something similar... Practicing with the ExPutt has helped me correlate stroke lengths with putt distances .. a thing I could not easily work on before (at least not for anything over 8ft! - the length of my putting mat) .. and have started doing the same method of pacing off everything that looks longer than 10 feet and rehearsing the appropriate length stroke. The results are definitely showing the last several rounds - more first putts, from any distance, are finishing closer to the hole leaving more "easy" second putts; and so the incidence of 3-putts is dropping .. from an average of 1.4 per 9 holes (before ExPutt) to an average of 1.125 over the last 8 x 9-hole rounds.
  19. Played 9 this afternoon; a little slow .. 2:45 round time .. but a fun course haven't been on in a few years and we were paired with a nice older couple. So typical golf for me, I guess - some good shots, some silly errors... Putting was not as sharp as prior round - had 2 3-putts where I got fooled by a change up in speed .. to slower .. and left the first one way short on a very sloped sidehill break both times.... Finished with 2 pars but 2 doubles (the 3-putts) and rest bogeys for a bogey average, with 19 putts.
  20. ^^ Nice!! Played 9 this afternoon and while overall my distance control is really improved - and I'm also more confident over all my putts - plenty of aalllmooost first putts and short easy seconds ... I blew it on holes #1 and #9 where the speed changed (#1 from the practice green) to much slooower... So I left the first one way short on a very sloped sidehill both times..... So I take back my previous no more three putts brag
  21. That's a great thing to coach him on, especially at a young enough age - I took up golf way too late and still don't trust my swing .. I still tense up and try to guide the ball to the target (which fails every time so you'd think I might learn something from that ).
  22. Ha ha, yes in a roundabout way .. you caught me! But, yes, it has helped with my lag putting - something I never really had a good way to practice before. And thanks! (..and thanks, too, for not asking about the rest of the round or how I scored... )
  23. Played 18 at a new to me course - nice, but not sure we'll go back... the routing was a little weird, play was slooow (5 hrs) and the finishing hole was not good .. a big departure visually and architecturally from every other hole and it looked and felt as if it had just been squeejed (technical term) into an otherwise unusable corner of the property that builders decided they couldn't place any houses on... The deck outside the clubhouse sure was nice afterwards, though - good cold beer and wine and tasty food Anyway, on the plus side I took along my old XR hybrid and am now wondering why I ever took it out of the bag!?! And... my putting was on point! Was 2-putting everything .. including two 50 footers (one bounced off the flagstick!) .. dropped a few 1-putts (whoo hoo!) ... and ... ZERO 3-putts all afternoon! That's a first, and yeah I sure hope it continues!
