  1. Well. I need updates on all my golf equipment and clothing.  I wonder how much equipment would improve my swing provided getting older and my equipment is from a decade ago. So I need to find a patient fitter than I can spend a couple hours and see if there is enough change to justify the cost.  Other than equipment, I could use lighter golf shoes.  Feet get tired in these skecher golf shoes.  Ideas?

@ZoonORama I’m fascinated by how much the Callaway Paradym in mint or new condition lost value (like $150-ish) once the Smoke was announced. I’m now toying with the idea of testing and spec-ing a Smoke and then waiting until next year to pick one up. Thoughts on this?

Yes, golf club manufacturers come out with something "new" every year and consumers must weigh the price to performance with the latest and greatest to the previous models. I am with you on this one.  Thank you for your comments.

  3. Hi members.  This a embarrassing.  I've been a member for over 5 years and I've always wondered how you attain a badge with your profile?  I have broken 70.  I have an ACE.  I have an albatross.  I won a club championship.  I have won long drive and chip/pitch contests.  Thank you in advance.

  4. OK. So I still use a titanium driver ie Cobra AMP from 2012/13.  I know the current drivers are more forgiving and probably offer more distance but I am struggling with the sound of the carbon fiber and naturally the cost of a new driver.  The latest technology has peaked my interest in that the face of these new drivers offer much more forgiveness.  I believe that Ping offered this a few years ago and others are catching up.   Digging deeper, I read an article that the difference between drivers are very minimal and that you must choose the one that looks the best and provides the most confidence when you take your stance.  I think that Taylormade and Callaway have accomplished this.. Cobra has as well with the new matte finish.   Let me know your thoughts and take the poll.

  5. Compared to other sports like tennis or basketball, golf is expensive.  The playing field for golf is larger than most other sports. To keep a golf course in decent shape, the operating costs are very high.  This cost is passed on to the golfers.  Also, many golf courses only want the "well-to-do" clientele so they raise their rates to discourage those of us that find it too expensive to play especially these higher end golf courses.

  6. Another good topic for a forum discussion.  Reading the responses and I would agree is that you have to weigh purchasing a brand new driver vs last year's model that can save you possibly a few hundred dollars. Personally, I have not test driven any of the 2023 models yet.  I have done some comparison of 2022 and older models to my current driver and still cannot justify the purchase especially with the cost of daily living going up.  For now, I will continue to try out the newer equipment at the stores and with permission, from my friends that do not care about personal budgets.

  7. My golf LIFE goal is to realize that it's a game and have fun no matter how frustrating this game can get.  Look at those wayward shots as opportunities.

Because I no longer have time or funds to play this game more than once per week, I don't have any game improvement goals.  If I were to pick something, it would be to average 32 putts or less for 18 holes and at same time hit more than 50% of greens in regulation.

This is a topic I feel passionately about. I was listening the to the "No Putts Given" podcast with Lou Stagner (data analyst at Arccos among other titles) and at the 31:00 mark he mentions a very simple formula for what courses to play:

Your 5 iron carry * 33 or 34 is the total course distance.

I love this idea. Mostly because I bet many people (mainly men) are playing courses longer than that. For me, I carry a 5 iron about 180 yds. So that is 180 * 33 = 5940 yds. I carry a driver 260 yds. I have no problem playing sub 6,000 yds. It is more fun and, guess what, I still don't shoot below par very often.

I would say if the majority of your golfing group is breaking 80 from the whites then they should stay there. If not, what are they afraid of? They might make more birdies? They might have more fun? The average second shot distance for a middle of the pack PGA tour player (distance-wise) is 140 yds on a par 4. That's probably a PW or soft 9 iron. If that is how we challenge a TOUR PRO then why should weekly golfers be subjecting themselves to stiffer test than that? Pride?

Good feedback on this topic.  However, I am surprised that you have a driver average carry distance of 260 yards and only 180 yards on a five iron.   With that driving length, you have many really short approach shots with course distance less than 6000 yards.
