2021 event #2 is in the books with an encouraging outcome.

We played at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville. A favorite among the league's players, but it's a tough Pete Dye course with a lot of elevation change, and those tricky Pete Dye greens to deal with.

It was an interesting round. While I didn't hit my intended line, or my best shots off the tees, I didn't miss a fairway until the 11th hole. So it was poor short game play that kept me from making par until the 8th hole. I rallied a bit but did tally a couple of penalties on the back 9, and made a birdie on the 15th hole. Altogether it came out to 47/43 - 90 for a net of 73. Good enough for B-Flight 5th, and 8th place overall on the day. Not bad considering I felt like I left a bunch of strokes out there.

The good: I played well tee to green. The bad: short game cost me several strokes - four 3-putts (three of those bogeys). The ugly: one missed green was two chips and a putt from the fringe to finally be putting 🤬.

To feel like I didn't play a great round I do have some good takeaways. I had better control of my tee shots so I kept myself in play most of the day. Even with the two penalties, I had no score higher than double bogey, which is rare for league play. And, even that 'meh' round was a top-10 finish and I should move up the standings boards a bit.

We've got two weeks to the next event so I guess it's time to focus on short game again at the practice range.

You played better than your score (I thought you were killing me so when I found out what I shot I was as shocked as anyone!!!) and I feel your pain on the short game... I couldn't figure out the greens for chipping/pitching as they checked when I didn't want them too and refused to check when I hit the ball perfect...

  2. I'm still gonna kick your ass again this year (just kidding.... or am I???)! HEHEHEHEHE! Looks like a good schedule this year and should be lots of fun! What adjustments did you make for the long game? I'm looking to swap drivers myself but haven't gotten the right fit just yet (took a RadSpeed 9 degee with the HZRDS Smoke Blue RDX out to the course 2 weeks ago and could get it to launch enough (confirmed on Trackman later that day that launch and spin were wayyyyyyy too low and also discovered that the real loft is 8.2 and not 9)...

MPR I know you said originally that you were on the high side of the handicap range for these irons....how do you feel these will play for a higher handicap player?

I’m playing to a 16-17 at this point but these really have me intrigued.

A few years ago I played a set of Bridgestone J40 DPC’s which I think lean more towards players irons than GI irons.

I’m so close to pulling the trigger on these!

Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy

I was a 19.7 when I ordered my 699 Pro's and currently down to 17.2 (dropping quickly) and the reason I'm dropping quickly is because these irons are both predictable and forgiving! Predictable in that they want to go high and straight... yes, I can turn one over left (normal for me) but I have to get "handsy" and forgiving in that shots out towards the toe are not losing huge amounts of distance nor going offline! The suggested handicap for the 699 Pro's is 3-13 (of which I'm not) but it's just making the assumption that players in that range "tend" to strike the ball better... I am/was a 19 because I duck hook off the tee into trouble, couldn't control the draw on my old irons, short game is a nightmare because I'm frazzled by the time I have to use it (working on refining it), and putting is very hit miss (grainy greens or slow ones kill me). I say all this because if your ball striking is reasonably sound, there should not be much concern but only under the assumption you don't need help getting the ball airborne (the reason there is offset on irons and more so with game improvement ones - use the 699's for that)!

Will your sub70s be in the bag this Saturday? That will make our group  pairing fun if each of us has new irons in play 🤪

YEP! I got range time in Wednesday night and got 18 in yesterday (I was supposed to play with you & Brian on Wednesday But I had to wait on furniture delivery)! Brian said you hit the new sticks really well... I took lots of notes from yesterday’s round and will use those and notes from Saturday to do an “unofficial review” but for the moment I can say OMFG!

I didn't get mine in time for this weekend, but UPS says they will be here tomorrow. Already cleared my schedule for afternoon golf.

LOL.... yep! Mine get here tomorrow! I've cleared Wednesday & Friday to spend plenty of time before my tournament Saturday!

Oh sure, wait until I order the 699 Pros to have them as a testing club! I was even going to do a review on them, and now... I'll just have to enjoy them and stuff.

I'll probably still do a review... And maybe pictures... Okay, pictures too.

But ummm I'd like to file an official complaint @Golfspy_CG2 I'm putting you on notice buddy! Staying all quite and stuff. I'm on to you. 👀

That said, I hope they arrive today so I can use them in a club tournament this weekend. If not, I can always blame poor play on my current set and let everyone know they are lucky my new clubs haven't arrived yet.

I saw that as well... I’m calling them first thing Monday morning to upgrade my shipping to 2 day! Like you, I want some range time and at least a 9 hole round in for some course testing for a tournament next Saturday. I missed my tournament at Copperhead this weekend as the wife had surgery on Tuesday and tending to her was more important... but this coming weekend she’s just gonna have to do without me for a few hours!!!

We can always do an “unofficial” review!

  7. The pain and agony of being a “mental midget” during a round! I try to do course management but many times to my detriment... couple of years ago I played tournament at OCN in Orlando where I shot 56 on the front 9 and 32 on the back! I was trying on the front 9 to put my ball into spots on the course that gave me the best/safest approach to playing/scoring and nothing worked. Making the turn I just didn’t care anymore and just started being aggressive for no other reason than it didn’t matter at that point (even hitting shots I had zero chance of pulling off and did)... key lesson I learned... stop trying to make something happen and just play the swing you brought that day!

I decided not to wait any longer, ordered a 699 pro 639 CB spilt set today.

I put my order in for the 699 Pro's today as well... I spoke with Jason on Tuesday and he basically removed any doubts I had. I would have ordered them yesterday but got hung up at work and couldn't slip away long enough to call my order in!

Thanks for checking us out Don.  I hope they got to you before the holiday weekend!  If you have any questions please let us know.  Thanks again!

Demo's arrived a few minutes ago! I'll hit the range with them in a few hours but the real test will be Saturday when I play a tournament at Innisbrook Copperhead... this time of the year the greens will be "firm-ish" so holding greens will be at a premium... traditionally, my 6 iron has be required to put in work at this course so I won't need to manage my way around it to get some quality looks at the performance. Initial impressions are as follows:

Looks - Sub70 for the WIN! That "traditional look" is very welcomed and I have to say sorely missed!

     Compare.jpg.c74dfbae4d0208a365b79c955d35f55d.jpg

Top Line - ummmmm very noticeable and once again Sub70 for the win!

    1304172727_TopLine.jpg.a6465bef9f7563165ed5fe47e1163b25.jpg

Soles - slightly slimmer sole on the Sub70 and this COULD be a welcomed change for turf action. I'm not a digger and there have been times where I think the RSi's sole tried to "help" where it wasn't needed and possibly has contributed to my getting steeper (or more downward attack angle) to reproduce that "ball striking" feeling I had with my Ping i10's that I miss so very much... for the moment let's call it a draw based on aesthetics alone because honestly I couldn't really care what it looks like sitting on the ground (can't see it) but more concerned with how it interacts with the turf! More to come later...

  10. I’m in the market for new irons (need some help here from those that actually know what they are talking about) and went to Club Champion for a fitting. I was targeting the 919 Hot Metal Pro’s and commenced to hitting several shaft options. Long story short, it wasn’t the best experience in the world and I won’t be purchasing the irons from them. The 919’s did not offer me any upgrade over my current TM RSi1’s but I’ll challenge that in a sec so keep with me for a moment. What did offer me better performance was Hogan PTx Pro’s (I think). So let’s jump into the data:

    Current Gamers 6 iron Trackman Data – TaylorMade RSi1’s ½” over - +2 upright (they have creeped to over +3) with Project X 95 5.5 Flighted shafts (101g) @ C9

SOOOOOOOO here is where I’m stumped! I went to another shop and did the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer and it came back with these for my top 4 – AMT White (R), Project X LZ 5.5 (115g), DG S300 (@ 118g), KBS Tour (120g) Stiff Soft Stepped and it makes sense as I have a quicker tempo swing… Looking at my data, it appears I need more spin but that might not be the case in reality right? I don’t currently have issues “holding greens” because height and decent angles are equally important! The heavier club (@ D8) had me slightly outside-in and closing the face so doesn’t that cost me spin? I suspect the same clubs @D2 (normal for most clubs) possibly perform better because D8 is freakin heavy after a few swings in succession? Both my gamer and the HMP are 26 degree lofts and the PTx is 30 degree and I was getting only slightly better spin with more loft but strangely launch angle went down (I was really tired at that point as the Hogan was the last test after maybe an hour of swinging the club).

Am I over thinking all this? I love the KBS Tour (120g) shaft and I’m seriously considering the Sub70 699 Pro irons… but would a different shaft be better? Maybe mid/high launch like the C Taper Lite or $ Taper Lite? HELP!!!!

  11. I have the 699 Demo 6 & 9 irons on the way to me now so I can decide if I'm pulling the trigger on these (or most likely the 699 Pro's) or not... REALLY hoping these are the real deal because I'm at my wits end on selecting new clubs! I did a fitting at Club Champion and while it provided me some good data, they wanted an astronomical amount of money to get me into the Hogan Ptx Pro's.

  12. I think that the key value of the MSG report is using the robot to keep all variables equal and provide us with the outcome so we as a consumer know what we might expect on any swing mirroring that of the robot. All those other variables change on a swing by swing basis for every golfer (none of us are machines and repeat exactly the same swing every time) so attempting to create an analysis with all these other factors would be near impossible because you'd also need to factor weather variables (temp, humidity, wind) as well... so at the very least as a consumer I can view the report as "If I swing at or near perfect, I can expect this ball to do X (a measurement somewhere within the range of the test for all factors)"!

In my own testing using their report, I was able to confirm I would get better performance out of a different ball I had never even considered using! I had been playing Vice Pro Soft exclusively and initially tried the Q Star Tour (performed better across the board over the Vice), then the Z Star (gained maybe 5 yards off the tee but lost 5 yards on short irons compared to Q Star), and ultimately tested the Maxfli Tour (performed better than all tested (for me) across all areas of distance, control, and spin on the average).
