  1. I've made up my mind to get fitted this year.  Probably start with a new driver.  So,  looking around the internet I somehow got the attention of Todd Kolb and VLSGolf because I'm now getting emails, pop ups on FaceBook, etc.  Apparently, this driver is "GUARANTEED to beat your current driver or your money back."  It also shows lots of seniors with great reviews.  AND it's only $249.

All that said, I got to wondering, does anyone in this community have any experience with one of these drivers?  I'm usually not one to fall for a lot of internet hype but now I'm curious.

  2. I made a big mistake this time around.  I've always regripped my own clubs and have always used Winn or Golf Pride grips.  This time (for whatever reason) I decided to go cheap... and paid the price.  I bought a Starlize kit with 13 grips, tapes, activator, etc.

Everything about them reeked of "cheap!"  and they were very difficult to work with.  I almost ruined two grips because they didn't slide onto the shaft easily and got stuck halfway.  The other problem was, if you get any of the activator fluid on the grip all the colors start smearing and running together.  NEVER AGAIN!

I'll probably finish out this season with these grips but I'll most likely regrip my clubs again in the off-season with quality grips.

Not just because I play them but I wonder how disruptive PXG has been.  During the Genesis they were advertising drivers at $199 again.  They always have some sort of deal on their stuff. Because they are private we may never know how much of a market disruptor they are.  But at my club im seeing more and more PXG headcovers.

Second point.  Once you have been fitted 5 or 6 times as I have, you just know.  I swing at 90 MPH.  Once you know a little about soft tip versus firm tip, shaft weight, etc. You can gamble on fitting yourself.  I'm not tooting PXG's horn but they will walk you through the rest on the phone.  Worked for me on a driver, two fairway woods and two wedges.

The same mentality can be applied to any club manufacturer and versus $600+ it's worth a roll of the dice especially if you go to a place like Dick's and hit a few models.

If I’m not mistaken, these clubs are the 2021  0211 drivers. If you go on their website now you’ll find they’re all sold out!  A great driver at a great price! What a novel idea!! 😂

  4. I think most golfers are becoming more aware of “slick” marketing as a way for OEMs to continue to gouge their customer base for ridiculous profits.  Every year, religiously, they all come out with “the greatest driver ever made!”; until next year, and all that hype was just crap. THIS YEAR’S model is now the greatest!  Folks, the technology just doesn’t evolve that quickly!

Let’s face it, just because John Rahm can hit the snot out of the ball with his new Paradym doesn’t mean we all can! If you spray your tee shot invest $150 with a local pro and fix your swing. It’ll feel like a “Jailbreak!”

The first one is myputter.ch. They are a fully customizable putter company with 2 main models and a whole variety of colors. The prices are not cheap at about $350 usd, but they also have an added option of 2 style faces. One rolled face and one traditional flat face. The cool part of their story is they are all made here in Switzerland and they employ disabled people to give them further job opportunities.

Very interesting putters!  However, with the Swiss franc almost on an equal par with the US dollar (at least for now) they are right up there in price with the elite US putters.  It would be difficult to commit to buying one without a 30-day guarantee with free return shipping.  That said, I love the idea that disabled people are employed.

Regarding "other" golf product companies, I just today added a Founders Club 21-degree 7-wood to my bag replacing my 4-iron.  It's brand new, directly from Founders.   I'll put it in play tomorrow for the first time.  Many folks are not familiar with Founders Clubs but they had a good following and reputation 20-30 years ago.  In fact, my brother played Founders woods for years and loved them.  You can buy individual woods, sets of woods, sets of irons, and complete sets all for short money.  They also have golf bags and other accessories. Also you didn't mention how you arrived at the driver head and shaft combo you currently have.

I forgot to mention, my brother-in-law works for Titleist so I got my driver new from the factory with their “regular” shaft for half price. 🫢    Never tried getting fitted or experimenting with different shafts. Something to look into!

    Thanks!

200-230 at 76? I think that's at the high end of club distance for our age. I'll be 76 in December and generally average now about 190ish occasionally I break the 200 + .and peak in the 170's for my 5W. Most of the guys I play with are in the same boat for age and distance. I did find that working out and/or lack of is making a difference in clubhead speed. I was consistently working out til May when we came back to Ohio - my numbers started to fall off since then - so it's back to the gym. Also you didn't mention how you arrived at the driver head and shaft combo you currently have. This past spring I upgraded from a 410/Alta Senior Shaft to a Taylormade SIM2 Max D with an AirSpeeder A flex shaft. That made a big difference so you might experiment with the head and shaft combo - that might met the distance expectations you're looking for. Note here's an 'unofficial review' of my upgrade.

Tony,  the operative phrase is.. “when I catch it just right.”  AND I need the roll! 😆

Great point about working out. I’ve slacked off a lot these day. Need to get back on schedule.

Nice choice on your new driver!

I'm 71 and beginning the exact same "experiment" you just described.  Odd thing for me is I hit a 3 wood off the deck pretty well; off even a low tee not so much.

Bobbers,  I had the same issue. So I just drop the ball behind the tee markers and hit off the deck. That’s why they call it golf — all the other 4-letter were taken!

  9. Like many, I struggle with consistency hitting my driver (Titleist TSi2 (2019??)).  At 76, I hit it around 200-230 when I catch it just right. I play at least twice a week; problem is, I never know who’s going to show up each round - the ball striker or the slicer!

So this week I retired my driver and used only my Cleveland Launcher 5-wood off the tee. I’ll admit, I hit it only around 180-200 yards, BUT, it was on a rope right down the middle! Every time!  On many holes I had to use it again for my 2nd shot but I was either on the green or very close.  It was one of my best rounds ever!

Now I’m wondering if I’ll ever go back to a driver. I’ve been very pig-headed about this for decades so it was a big deal for me!  It was an eye-opening experience.  Of the courses I play, I might consider the big D occasionally for the carry, but it could be a 3-wood instead!

I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks - if you kick him hard enough! 🤣

  11. I always my Tilly or my wide brim Panama hat on the course during the summer.   I can drench the Tilly in cold water and then wear it, whereas the Panama couldn't handle all the water.  But it does have a really nice brim that keeps the sun off and is great when there's a nice sea breeze.

  12. Not sure what's happening with Maxfli Tours and Tour Xs, but the prices have jumped considerably.  I just went to Amazon and searched for Maxfli golf balls.  They seem to be pushing SoftFli, and StraightFli, and U Fli, but Tour had only one hit and  it was for $45/dz.  I could eventually find Tour X but also for $45/dz.

Out of curiosity I checked with PGA Superstores and Golfers Warehouse in the Boston area and they don't even carry Maxfli!  I did find a local Dick's Sporting Goods that purportedly has them in stock now and on sale for 2 boxes at $60.  From what I can see, that's a great deal and the only game in town!

  13. Well, we're gonna find out!

I just bought a 46" GP Face-on putter from Patrice Dionne because my back just can't take bending over to putt.  It took a long time to make such a radical decision, but I'm committed to putting this way for the upcoming season.  Living in the Boston area, I hope to get on a real putting green within the next few weeks; but if putting on my bedroom carpet is any indication, I think I'm going to like it.

It does take a little getting used to because it different than anything else I've done in golf.  I get my line from directly behind the ball, then move to the left one step and facing the hole. (It's not legal to putt by straddling the ball, but putting from the side and facing the hole is totally legal.)  Then it's just a simple pendulum swing along my line.  I'm sure it'll take practice to get my distances down but it's very comfortable on my back.  Let's see what the year brings! 😅

  14. I tried TGF, but I'm not confident in its results.  Maybe because I'm not confident in the answers to the ambiguous questions that are used to spit out a result.  Then I discovered the videos that help you answer the questions.

So first attempt, I put in data I thought was "about right."  I used a 15 handicap, medium swing speed, level AoA, and medium tempo.  It then goes through its "big data" analysis and pops out a  TM M3 or M4.  So I mull this over for awhile.  I got rid of my TM Superfast in 2017 because the shaft was too long and I couldn't control it.  I replaced it with a Titleist D2 917 and have been enjoying it a lot.

Now I look at this result (and the videos) a little more realistically and figure out, my bi-weekly golf scores come in around 86-92, so my wishful thinking handicap is probably 18ish (because I don't maintain an official one).

My average drive flys straight about 200+/- yards, so my swing speed is probably slow rather than medium (I discount the occasional 230-250 as outliers).

I have no idea what my Angle of Attack is, but I assume level because my drives climb at a slight angle.  However, if I put the ball a little further forward I can get better elevation but have to adjust my aim more to the right to compensate. Although it looks prettier, I'm not so sure it gives me much better distance.

Finally, I have to guess at tempo.  It's definitely not slow, I'd like to think it's medium, but I can't rule out quick.  So for now, I'll have to assume medium.

It's time to update my answers to take into account reality.  I decide to re-enter my stats, and at the cost of another $7, (this is starting to get expensive!  ;) ), and NOW my perfect driver is a Ping G400 with 14+ yards and miniscule accuray improvement, OR, a Cobra FMAX with only 3+ yards and 14+% improvement in accuracy!  Ohhh, what to do???

Maybe I should pay the $100 for a professional fitter to figure out the right answers to these ambiguous questions so I can spend yet another $7 to find out my perfect driver!

I wonder if this "big data" approach will work for irons some day.
