Big news for TaylorMade and their Project [a] launch along with their push to be a serious player in the golf ball market:

Based on last night's equipment counts, for the first time EVER, Titleist is not the #1 ball in play by amateurs. Amateurs is the reason why I put that '*' up there in the headline.

As you might expect, Titleist remains the #1 ball (and likely by plenty) in use by the actual professionals on the course, but being able to claim #1 at anything, especially when what you're trying to push is a better ball for amateur players is actually something...maybe not a huge something, but something.

You think we'll see any commercials this weekend?

Here are the quick stats:

  • Project (a), played by 53% (83 of 156) of the amateur field.
  • Overall, nearly 60% (93/156) of the amateur field played a TaylorMade ball

By comparison, last year TaylorMade's golf balls were played by only 20 amateurs.

Also...TaylorMade is giving away 10,000 sleeves of the new Project [a] ball. Click here if YOU WANT.

Very good question. Were the ams given the balls?

Almost certainly.

A few ways to look at that:

1. Hey Free Balls! Let's play these.

2. Hey I'm so stinking rich I don't care about free balls, but I'll toss these in my platinum-plated golf bag.

3. Probably other free balls available.

4. Pros play free balls too. Titleist is #1 because of free balls.

Obviously this is a planned thing, but there were no guarantees.

T - Have you seen any comparisons in spin between the Project A ball and the Tour Preferred lineup?  I'm assuming the A will spin less off wedges, but what about driver?

Definitely interesting. Puts a chink in Titleist's armor, but really how many of those guys are going back to Titleist after? As you said, they don't care about money, so they'll spend in their comfort zone.

The problem with this bit of statistic is, although cool someone is making a dent in the Titleist dominance in ball counts, it was done so blindly. These am could not have possibly made an informed choice as it was probably the first time the ball was made available to them. They simply put a ball in play that was readily available. But I do like the news!

...And here's the official press release:

TaylorMade Golf's PROJECT (a) is Amateurs' No. 1 Choice of Golf Ball at AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

Nearly 60% of the Amateur Field Playing a TaylorMade Brand Ball

More than Half Choose Project (a)

CARLSBAD, Calif. (February 7, 2014) – TaylorMade Golf announced last night, via its official Twitter handle (@taylormadegolf), that its new Project (a) golf ball was played by 53% (83 of 156) of the amateur field at this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and that Project (a) was played by more amateurs than all Titleist, Callaway, Bridgestone, Srixon and Nike golf balls combined. Overall, nearly 60% (93/156) of AT&T's amateur field played a TaylorMade brand ball this year, compared to last year when only 20 amateurs played a TaylorMade ball.*

The “a” in Project (a) stands for “amateur,” and the reason for its creation is simple: Amateur golfers generate less spin than Tour professionals. Project (a) is designed to deliver more spin on mid irons, short irons and shots around the green; resulting in enhanced control and increased scoring opportunities.

The high-spin performance of Project (a) is rooted in Soft Techâ„¢, a cast urethane cover that's TaylorMade's softest and most durable to date. At $31.99 per dozen, Project (a) is one of a few golf balls at its price point ($31.99) with a urethane cover. For more information, please visit taylormadegolf.com.

“The number of Project (a) golf balls in play this week demonstrates that, with the right message, product and performance, players will switch,” said Dean Snell, vice president of golf ball R&D. “For these amateurs, playing at Pebble Beach is the highlight of their year, and to see them test Project (a) a few weeks before the event, or in some cases the week of, and make the change is a true testament to the product's performance.”

TaylorMade officially launched Project (a) earlier this week with amateur competitors on the Pebble Beach driving range, and also by announcing a month-long promotion that gives consumers the chance to receive a free sleeve of Project (a) golf balls; TaylorMade is prepared to give away up to 10,000 sleeves. Did Taylormade give you this response or is this yours?

Non-story if you think about it.

All me.

Actually, I think it is a story...at least it will be. You know how this works. TaylorMade does what they need to do to put them in a position to make a claim.

This time around they littered the field with Project [a] balls, relegated Titleist to #2 (for amateurs) for the first time ever (how's that for a middle finger).

Next comes the commercial where they talk about more of the serious amateurs in the Pebble Beach ProAm chose Project [a] over the ProV1 (because even if the balls were free, the guys chose to play them), and by the time they're done promoting just that, nobody is going to remember or care that the balls were giveaways.

#1 Ball for amateurs isn't the #1 Ball in Golf, but #1 claims are basically still the best marketing there is.
