revkev
I was intrigued by the heavy/light concept from our most reason 5 questions with long drive champ Jamie/Sodlowski (sp?) I used to do a lot of heavy club work in the winter and then I read that this would slow you down so over the past few years I've being doing a lot of light club training in the back yard between rounds and practice sessions. I don't know why I've never gone heavy/light before but I haven't. It makes sense that this would be the best of both worlds, 10 swings heavy/10 light every day plus some core work and a little cardio (getting that with a brisk 2 mile week each morning since school started - my golden retriever makes me move.) Any thoughts on the heavy/light concept? It may be worth a try. Undershooter
It's a good way to train. Our speed training back in college incorporated similar programs through sleds, agility work and parachutes. That crap sucked lol Also we would train with weighted baseball's and then switched to a tennis ball. After going back and fourth we would go to a real baseball. Hitters did similar things with bats. Weighted bats, fungos and then real bats. It works. revkev
I hadn't thought of that but of course I did it for baseball. I tried it today 10 swings with the medicus weighted club, 10 with the speed stick. I will try to do it every day that I don't play or practice and see how it goes. I've only been using the speed stick - the medicus was rotting away in the storage room. Blade
I made this several years ago for the light club. I drilled through two golf balls and halfway through the third and epoxied them to a broken driver shaft. I used an Orange Whip for the heavy one. A three foot piece of 3/4" pipe works great for a heavy club also. Sorry, but I guess the site doesn't like vertical pictures. It rotates it on its side. mizuno_lover
I remember seeing a heavy driver that was hittable on the range advertised as a training aid. They marketed it as a way to increase your swing speed. I thought it was a great idea at the time and still do, I just couldn't afford it. It seems to have dropped off the radar now so maybe it didn't sell to well. I might just google it and see if it is still out there. My Bag Driver: G25 Stiff shaft3 Wood: JPX 850 16 degree. mizuno_lover
Yes it is still available and the website that I found it on seems to have every golf training aid known to mankind and I kid you not. I'm talking seven pages maybe more of training aids. If I were you I'd just have a look out of pure curiosity. Here's the link: http://www.golftrainingaids.com/POWER-HITTER-DRIVER/productinfo/POWHIT/ The driver head starts at 240 grams and goes up to 350 and the shaft weighs in at 250 grams. It is marketed as the number 1 training aid of its type on the tour. Is it? Who knows but sure is worth a look if you are into it and is quite reasonably priced by the look of it/ My Bag Driver: G25 Stiff shaft3 Wood: JPX 850 16 degree. fozcycle
I remeber when my Grandfather took his old hickory shafted Driver and added a big lead weight to the face. He drilled holes throught the lead into the driver. He would swing this at home and before he went to play. This was around 1960. revkev
I have the Power Hitter and that's the heavy driver that I started using yesterday. I've hit balls with it a few times - what a pain! I'm going to keep this simple 10 with it every day followed by 10 with the power swoosh that I have lying around (I've been using that exclusively). At one time I had a donut that I affixed to an old driver and would swing nearly daily all winter. I think the key is to do both types of work in close proximity to one another. If it goes well I may start 10 swings with the heavy driver, hit 10 balls with it, 10 swings with the inverted driver, hit ten balls at regular weight as on the range practice. BIG STU
I made a speed stick several years ago from a fiberglass pipe that is about 3/4 diameter. I wrapped friction tape on the end to securely grip it. My heavy club is an old cheapie metal no name driver I bought at an yard sale for $1. I drilled the head and added a mix of epoxy and fishing sinkers. Let that dry and sealed the hole with J B Weld. It is steel shafted so I blew the grip off and put the same mix down the shaft about 1 inch to help stabilize it. Kenny B
I think you have to be a little careful about using weighted clubs. They are certainly good for stretching before a round, but overuse can introduce slight changes in your swing that may affect tempo and swing plane. Just saying... use with caution! “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
revkev
Understood Kenny, my teacher says yes to this one though - it's 10 with the heavy/10 with the light each day - no more The idea is to make normal swings with the heavy club and normal but as fast as possible while staying balanced with the light one. BIG STU
Oh yeah Kenny I agree with you 100%. I use mine to help stay loose and flexable. I guess you could say I do golf yoga with that thing. I never do the regular swing tempo thing with it. OHHHH it makes me hurt to think if I tried that how many joints I would throw out.
