den748
Not sure if any of you have participated in one of these tournaments before, but for those who have not, this is a format where the golfer can choose 6 holes from each of 3 tee locations (usually red (forward), white (middle), and blue (back). I've done it once and really enjoyed it. Does anyone have suggestions on how to best choose? If it's a course I play a lot I'd think this is easier but if it's a new course, do you go by handicap (choose the red for the hardest holes)? Or always use the red for the par 5's to increase eagle chances? I think I'm going to go red's for all par 5's and then choose 2 par 3's for the other 2. For the blue's I'll look at the other par 3's to see if it allows for a full club rather than a half swing or something. Any other tips out there? SmoothG
If playing forward on par 5s will allow you to hit a short iron into the green for your second shot, I'd do that. If you still can't reach with a scoring club on par 5s then I would move up on the par 3's so I'd be hitting a wedge into all greens. xOldBenKenobiX 1 Quote Cobra SpeedZone 9* TourEdge EXS 18* TourEdge C721 22*H PXG 0211 DC 6-P + G Cleveland Zipcore Full Face 52/58* Wilson Staff Infinite Michigan Ave Taylormade Tour Response Link to comment

xOldBenKenobiX
I have never played a tourney like that before, but I do love your logic with the par 5s, you want to have the shortest club possible for your second shot, specially if it makes it easier to get into the green in two, most courses have 4 par 5s and 4 par 3s, so I would strategize to use those 6 reds in the longest overall holes, the 4 par 5s and maybe the two longest par 4s. I don't know that are the lengths of the par 3, if they are not overwhelming and the yardage from the blues, I would keep those as blues and utilize the whites for most of the 4s. Do you by any chance get the yardages from each tee color in each hole in advance so you can plan? THEZIPR23
Not sure of distance differences between blue and white on the par 3's but I would play all par 3's as far back as possible. In general par 3's are the highest average score. Won't change much if only 10-20 yard difference between tees. Par 4's and par 5's can change drastically if you are closer off the tee. den748 and xOldBenKenobiX 2 Quote Stealth 2+ 9 (Diamana PD 60 S 45") Stealth 2+ 15 (Diamana PD 70 S 43") G425 19 (Raijin 2.0 85x) G425 22 (Raijin 2.0 85x) ZX7 5-9 (KBS C Taper S) Vokey SM9 45 10 F (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 49 08 F (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 55 08 M (KBS 610) Vokey SM9 59 04 T (KBS 610) Spider GT Splitback 34" ProV1 #23 Twitter @THEZIPR23 "One thing Golf has taught me, is that my muscles have no memory." DaveP043
I'd just use a simple evaluation, which holes does the yardage make the biggest difference? If you can make a 3-shot par-5 easily reachable, do it. If you can turn a 5-iron par-3 into a wedge, that's a good choice. If you can take a big dangerous hazard out of play on a par-4, that's a good idea. To move forward to gain 10 or 20 yards isn't that big a change, might as well stay back.. Tom the Golf Nut
You can always get the score card on line if you don't have one for that course. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, water hazards and such. I typically go by yardage. Try to get on par 5's in two, then look at long par 4's to give you a wedge in for the reds. Blue I would pick short par4's or 3's den748 1 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag Link to comment
den748
Thanks all. Looking at the course, I will go red on all the par 5's, there is a par 4 where you can reach in 1 from reds (cuts off a dog leg), and then a par 3 where the red is a wedge shot and you don't have to go over a bunker. The #1 handicap hole is rather interesting and will go with blue on it because being back actually take a water hazard out of play. Will be interesting! Looking forward to it. den748
Just in case you were curious, I'm playing in 2. One tomorrow is a 2 person scramble event at my home course and this is what I was referring to in my strategy above: http://www.southridinggc.com/course/ The second is on the 4th and is an individual handicapped event here: http://www.pleasantvalleygc.com/course/ The individual event is at a course I've played a few times but am not super familiar enough to come up with a great strategy. Well, the 2 person scramble went really well. Finished at Even so was middle of hte pack. Kind of what I'd expect from two 10-15 handicaps. Left a few strokes out there but over all a great time. The solo event on the other hand..... just a tip for everyone...don't stay up to 3am drinking with buddies when you have a golf tournament tee off time of 7:13am. I almost passed out on the putting green prior to the round. I was dead last in the city tournament two years in a row 2011 and 2012 I was in Maryland over the weekend, I think you guys were facing 100+ degrees heat index this weekend in VA too. Hangover and dehydrated in that kind of heat is very dangerous. I hope you are feeling better today.
