... Nothing wrong with cutting to your preferred playing length once you absolutely establish it is the right length for your swing. That said, absolutely nothing wrong with continuing to choke up either. Some find the counter balance effect works for them when choking up and after cutting the shaft, it doesn't feel the same.

Big time fan of the counterbalanced effect. Plus for me mentally something about knowing I'm closer to the ball makes it feel like its easier to hit a better shot. Most Par 3's I club up, choke down 1/2 in and play it as a knockdown shot and the left to right dispersion just goes away.

  2. Experimented with choking up some more during today's Trackman session and came to a surprising conclusion. I was really trying to focus on delivering less loft and lowering the flight if need be because should I play on a windy day 140ft in the air and 3,000rpm's of backspin is going to absolutely kill me.

The length I settled on I marked with the blue line and I was seeing tighter dispersion, better dispersion, lower flight, and in general all of the good things that happen when good confident swings are made.

Looking at the data yes more shots were hit with it full length but that dispersion choked up is tight (full report here) those massive misses just didn't seem to be a concern at this choked up length. When I got home I took it to my club ruler and measure what this change was and I was choking up a whole 2.25in bringing the playing length to about 44.0in roughly.

By no means am I going to cut the shaft down to this length at any point because that would be absurd. However, the next time I take it to the course I will be playing it at the marked length to see the on course results and be reporting back.

Such great data, and really interesting to disect.   I really wish I had an indoor or outdoor place where I could go to get big chunks of time on Trackman.   And I work at a course and have access to our Trackman, but the instructors have it use 90% of the time, plus it's range balls outside.

Your GolfCave sounds like an ideal place, I'd pay a pretty good monthly membership to have something like that around here.

It's a really great facility and there are a few here in NJ but none do it the way GolfCave does it. Been working there since 2020 and since it's a part time gig I have been fortunate enough to not get a bunch of hours but take full advantage of the benefits where if no other simulators are in use I can use one for free. So typically since I go in the morning and nobodies there I have full access at no cost. It's a pretty sweet gig especially in the winter.

I'm loving all this data. There's nothing wrong with high bombs! Within reason I guess. Funny how you get the 1.5 smash factor on the one swing with "bad setup".

That PRGR launch monitor is turning out to be super handy for you (and us for following along). That's great you had the course to yourself and could collect data along the way. Is it fairly easy to use the PRGR on shots? I've seen Youtubers that video every shot with a tripod and their phone, and they have it down well enough that it doesn't bother random playing partners. That's cool if you can do that with a launch monitor.

Also, awesome that you were getting good ball speed on the range (with range balls) that matches on-course numbers. You've got data from enough different situations here to remove uncertainty for things like that.

The "bad setup" was more a reference to the PRGR setup as I probably didn't have it setup exactly down the line i intended to swing on. When this happens the ball speed is still accurate however the club head speed seems to be off by a few mph.

It's also super easy to setup and maybe adds 30 seconds to my setup. I tee the ball up, set the driver down on my intended line behind the ball, place the PRGR at the butt end of the grip on that line, and then swing away. It's a fairly quick process and would argue that people who take practice swings have a longer pre-shot routine.

Holy heck!!!! Those are some pretty insane numbers!!

It's got some pop for sure and I'm very happy to start seeing the efficiency climb up.

Love all the data @ZMendle10! Interesting that the longer shaft was finding the center of the face more, is your usual shot shape a draw?

Also, that website GolfCave built to display all your Trackman results is fantastic! I've only been able to see Trackman data in the mobile app, and after a recent update it's been kinda hard to read.

Edit: Wow! It also captures swing video for each shot too, really cool!

I think a lot of the center dispersion with the standard length was me finding a solid groove with the AutoFlex and just riding that wave towards the end of the session.

I think trackman does this for all reports but not the app. It's such an intuitive tool and way to look thorugh a session on your own time. And they don't really expire which is also great so I can always go back to them as well.

  6. Fresh off the heels of my trip I was back at it getting some swings in with the Dream 7. I headed off to the Golfcave early this morning and got plenty of swings in to start figuring out the shaft. I wanted to test the driver length at full length as well as choked up about 3/4ish of an inch which would bring the playing length to somewhere between 45.5in and 45.75in which is where all my drivers are currently at.

Full Trackman report can be found here for anyone who really wants to dive in but lets go over the highlights. with first being overall the numbers and dispersion are pretty similar. I hit 55 shots at full length and 35 shots choked up with only editing out one shot from the full length the dispersion circles are pretty much on top of each other.

    image.png.9a1d47d0ecaec6d64be09cf43810607c.png

Honestly from this test and large of a data pool it would be hard to notice a difference on the course. One thing that me is the center grouping of the standard length. I really started to find a groove and it shows.

Now removing about half the shots from each gives us a good idea about what the good ones between the two are doing and we start to see them separate from each other a bit more. With the standard length we have about 24 shots and with the choked up grouping we have 17 useable shots.

    image.png.67eaaed604350f3f8e5cf2b718052a47.png

The shorter is still marginally faster on club and ball but the spin is much higher giving a higher but floatier flight compared to standard length.  So right now the standard length is the winner and I think I am on to something with getting a feel for the shaft because the red dispersion circle is tight and can't be ignored.

    2 final thoughts

    1) my theory on lost efficiency because of club path was correct as we are seeing a much much more neutral path compared to the fitting and much higher efficiency on the good strikes.

    2) We are closing in on the 180mph ball speed goal. This shaft has the potential so it's not a matter of if it happens but when it will happen.

The story behind the DTX is that our machines couldn’t run a cord material without clogging the machine. I designed this grip specifically to try get to as much traction as possible.:it is a great grip…I might be biased though..

You should be both biased and proud. I started using it in like 2019 and haven't gone back since.

So true.  I am coming from a very quick jerky transistion to having worked very hard on a 2 second or count full stop at the top.   I’m not quite Cameron Young yet in that regard.   But at least 50% of the time i do.  And as You say. Deadly!   Including one 248 yard last week which is my longest in at least 7 years.

And heres the thing. Those 50% or so where i dont quite have the tempo yet.  They are still very good results. Often times equal to whaf one od my previous decent shots would be ans certainly miles better than what my previous bad would be.

This is very reaffirming in some struggles that I have been having with getting used to the shaft. To me this is shaping up to mean 2 things so far.

First is you absolutely have to get fitted to have this shaft dialed in. If you don't you will never get the most out of it.

Second, be patient there are gains to be made and there will be an adjustment period similar to a swing change. The work has to be put in but the results will be worth it.

The shaft was playing at almost 47”, but we cut it down to 46” for now. He wants me to measure out .25” increments down the grip, and practice with my hands choked up to those positions. He doesn’t think 46” will be my final length, but he’s hesitant to chop it before I’ve experimented with it.

Absolutely stealing this since I am for sure considering going shorter as a possibility.

Wow you put yourself through the wringer too! 🙂 Well it’s been thrown into the fire, and sounds like you can already see there is something there, which is awesome. Thanks for that!

It was a very long day of testing but easily the most thorough of all the products that I have tested There is for sure something to it and i have my theories but I will unfortunately save them till the final review. I will be going to Austin from Saturday thru Tuesday this week so I won't be bringing my sticks with me so I wanted to put it fully through its paces beforehand for first impressions. I will try to get to hitting some more balls today or tomorrow before I leave but only time will tell.

I wanted to ask how consistent your indoor sim and outdoor 18 holes experiences were with it. When on the course, was it performing similar to how it showed up on Trackman?

I will say what I was seeing during my fitting was very close to what I was seeing on the course. The good ones were high bombs and the bad ones were super spiny weak fades. That being said I had no penalties off the tee and several drives over 310 yards so when it connects boy oh boy does it connect and is it a fun ball flight to watch. As testing progress I am going to capture clubhead speed and ball speed with my PRGR launch monitor.

     image.png.aa9efeb396f31248839ac3c42952ba3a.png

I have been using this thing for a while and the ball speed and club head speed are accurate to within a mph because of rounding. It's easy to setup and use so I will have it be apart of my on the course testing for the final review. Unfortunately the batteries were dead when I wanted to use it yesterday so we will have to wait till next week to try again on the course.

  10. So today was a massive day for the AutoFlex Dream 7. It was put through the absolute ringer today with a trackman session, followed by a fitting, then a pre round range session, and finally 18 holes from tees playing about 6800 yards. I'm going on a last minute trip to Austin from Saturday to Tuesday so no golf is gonna be played those days. However, being able to do so many different situations with it was really eye opening for me and gave me a true performance for my first impressions.

Some things that I noticed so far for those who are impatient. The shaft delivers quicker swing speeds and thus higher ball speeds, shot shape is for sure consistent, and the head weight needs to be on the lighter side to get the most out of this shaft. So adhere to the swing weight recommendations for the shaft flex and get fitted for this shaft to get the most out of it.

I'm hoping to get both an outdoor range session as well as a trackman session before my trip but so far this shaft is the real deal and I'm excited to continue to the process.

  11. Tried to get to this earlier today but got a little caught up and the day got away from me but the Dream 7 has arrived! I have it all specked out at D2 and trimmed from 46 3/4in to 46 1/8in in length with a Golf Pride CPX grip. We are ready for our fitting tomorrow and more photos will surface in the first impressions but for now hers a bit of a sneak peak.

... I am old school. My Autoflex Dream 7 will get here when it gets here. 😎  In the meantime my Ventus Red Velo knows what's coming and on the 247yd par 4 over water yesterday hit a drive 10 yds over the green. So it has a few more days to state its case before the new guy arrives.

It's called club chatter for a reason because clubs talk and they know when their number is upon them.

I really like your set of questions there, on the money.

Do you play a little fade with driver, or roughly straight? Your path/angle numbers look like tiny fade, but I also see most of your drives are on the left half of the fairway on that one Trackman screen. Oh this Arccos graphic shows slightly more right misses than left. Anyway, nice hitting!

If I'm not trying to hit a specific shot shape I want to see something relatively straight or a slight fade and the days where I have the fade working are by far my best days off the tee. However I was struggling with a hook a few months ago because I was shutting the face in my takeaway and keeping it shut. It's gotten much better however those large misses to the left still show up every now and then and usually what follows is a few open club faces to the right producing a slice on a neutral path.

    image.png.e7c22c8b446fc5738cc867df12c4b49e.png

Out of 20 shots only 2 shots you could make the argument that the path got away from me relative to how neutral it was the prior ones. Something to see if the AutoFlex Dream 7 gives me more control over the clubface while not effecting path because if that is the case we will be in business.

Went the more subtle route myself and went with the black and green one as I am always a fan of subtle detailing that the black background provides for the green. It was an honest toss up between this one and the white one but after seeing some sneak peaks of the shafts I'm very happy with my  decision.
