  1. Hope the surgery worked; when will you know? I’m sure that your swing will be fine, but short game might be a little rusty… my experience from long layoffs.
  2. Today my wife and I teed off at 0900. Thought we were going to be alone, as there were not many cars in the parking lot. At the last minute we were joined by two young guys we have played with before; both can really hit the ball far… sometimes… and straight… sometimes!! Good thing our course has adjacent fairways without many trees. They both could use some short game practice!! Even though it was sunny, a brisk wind out of the north chilled me to the bone!! I struggled on the front nine putting on less than ideal greens that haven’t fully healed after aeration. I shot 42 (+5) with a double and didn’t get my first par until Hole #9… the #1 handicap hole!! However, I did make two birdies; one a one-inch tap-in, and the other a SW hole out from 60 yards, so my score could have been a lot worse!! The back nine was better with pars and a couple of bogeys until the par 5 #18… decent drive, poorly hit FW that worked out OK. Had a SW into the green; came up short and landed in the bunker next to the lip only 3 yards from the green. The green is elevated and standing in the bunker, I can’t see the putting surface. I could only get the ball up and out but left it in the rough by the green. Chip and 2-putt for my double. A mediocre 39 and total of 81. The two guys were impressed with my play, even though it was mediocre. I was always on the green closer than they were… mostly from better chipping! One came up to me and checked my bag looking at my irons… "What are these blades? Mac—-Gregors?” Never heard of them. He just ordered new P790’s.
  3. Happy Birthday @ZoonORama (again), @vamosjackets, @Vernon, and @Indi Golf!! Have a great Easter birthday!!
  4. The round today was rather chilly even though the sun was out; wind out of the north… thanks Canada!! A mediocre 81 with two birdies and two doubles. Greens are not back to normal yet; probably another week. Got home and saw our Tulip Magnolia tree blooming in the sun... It always looks beautiful, but the flowers don’t stay on the tree very long. Sort of like buying an avocado; get one slightly green, wait a day or two, then poof… too ripe!!
  5. I only know roughly how far I hit any club; not precise carry distance. I am not that good to hit any club consistently the same distance. What I do know is how far I can’t hit a club. Using GPS I know F, M, B distances, and when I know the back distance, I know what club will not go off the back; same goes for a layup shot… hit a club that I can’t get to the water even of I flush it. I will usually shoot for middle of greens, knowing that mishits could still be on the front. I will use the front number on some greens where there is no trouble short and I would rather chip than have long, downhill breaking putt if I don’t hit the number. My strategy.
  6. Appreciate the offer Bill. Thanks!! Might have to stop by sometime.
  7. Good Morning everyone and Happy Easter!! Sounds like everyone is having a feast today; love BBQ!! Since it’s just my wife and I, we don’t BBQ as much as we used to. However, yesterday our next door neighbors invited us over for dinner at 3pm… Perfect! We have a 9am tee time and we don’t have to cook!! Enjoy the day today!!
  8. Well done Bill!! I’m glad I’ve already been to Palm Springs. That atmospheric river is drenching SoCal, AZ and Las Vegas. I hope next year isn’t the same. Planning our return to Phoenix area next winter.
  9. That something has been with me for years. I have to work on stretching my low back and hips just to keep the pain low. Seems like playing golf my be the cause… uh oh! Probably from years working at a desk and NOT doing those stretches. I got old… that doesn’t help.
  10. @Cannon Safe, at @Bigant18 and @swwyocoyote Welcome to the forums!! Glad you joined us!
  11. Agree. Our course “Committee" changed the ratings for several holes a couple of years ago. One relatively short par 4 used to be rated #3. It had water all down the left side of the fairway that also ran in front of the green; to the right of the fairway is rough that are high grassy mounds. Serious lie issues and carry over the water means no guarantee getting over the water. The green is no bargain once you get there avoiding a massive bunker on the right and a deep pot bunker just over the water in front. The “Committee” which is the pro, asst pro, and Men’s Club players decided that it didn’t deserve to be rated #3, so it was changed to #7, because for the better players it’s driver or less and a wedge. I think it’s probably the hardest hole on the course for the bogey golfer. I’ve seen scores up to 11. As for par 3’s we have 5 of them; two on the front nine (par 37) and three on the back nine (par 35) The ratings are 13, 9, 10, 4, and 16. I don’t think the ratings for these par 3’s was changed much, if any. Since most of the rounds played by the Men’s Club are played from the Blue tees and not from the Black tees, the hole ratings were assigned based on their hole scores over the course of a year. So, one thing to consider when looking at the Hole ratings is what Tee was used for the rating. In our case it is not the tips!! Playing from the White or Senior tees, I have a completely different view of hole difficulty than from the Blue tees.
  12. Happy Birthday @dekape58!! Happy Birthday!! Go ahead and have your cake and eat it too! In your honor I will make an Old Fashioned!! Thanks!
  13. Been playing the Callaway Epic Max 3W and Heavenwood for the past couple of years. 3W has not been a good club for me until I bought this one. Bought the Heavenwood first and loved it, so decided to try the 3W. The Heavenwood is fantastic out of the rough. The key will be finding the right shaft IMHO.
  14. During the late fall - winter - early spring, I like to start a little later when the temp warms up a few degrees… every degree helps. In winter it’s a crapshoot because frost delays mean later starts and if we have a later start anyway, then tee time is pushed into the afternoon unless there are cancellations. In the spring - summer - and early fall we always play early to avoid the heat. Can get to 100-110º by noon. Doesn’t bother me, but my wife is prone to heatstroke.
  15. Have fun today!! Loved playing Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain when I was still working in TN.
  16. Save some room in your luggage for shirts from the clubhouse with their logos on them.
  17. So… how many under par did you shoot?
  18. And I thought it was all in the hips….
  19. I am not interested in the usual “set” because I play Driver and 3 fairway woods… no hybrids. I hate sets that are D, F, X marked. If individual covers were available, put me down.
  20. Harder than I worked before I retired!!!
  21. The question should be how young is too young for a riding cart?! I play at a muni and many players, including me, are… how should I say it… older? While I ride when playing with my wife, I try to walk as much as I can while she drives; I ride up the hills. Many older players also walk; some days I walk 9-holes with my pushcart. However, I would wager that most players under the age of 40 ride in carts, and the majority of the walkers are over 40; I’m 76. Might be one reason why the rental carts get beat up before their lease is up. There have been times when my buddy and I would walk the course paired with another twosome of 20-somethings riding in a cart. There should be a state law that unless you have a disability, players under 40 must walk. However, the course has to make money and lots of money can be made with cart rentals. Get in shape!! If you are in good shape, get in better shape! Walking the course does make you stronger, but until you get used to the distance and the changing terrain, your legs will get tired and poor shots will results. Don’t worry about it; shots get better as the legs get stronger. Good luck!
  22. You might give Grips4Less a try. I bought grips from them in the past and now I see that they have a nice selection of iron and driver shafts.
  23. Happy Birthday @mbrodeur86, @mikeanthony, @Davidr, @Rtracymog, @Hosel_Rockets, and @onyxwulf!! Best wishes for a great day!!
  24. Maybe fairways, but Bill… you’ve played here; do you see these working on the grassy mounds where our rough is? I imagine lots of things happening. What if it misses a section; will the course eventually look like crap? While it supposedly won’t run into anything, it might and then lawsuits if it were a golfer/child. I’m sure it will run over a ProV1 just like the guys do here on their mowers. Martha is worried about her squirrels.
