A ball in flight loses something like 3.3 to 4 percent of its spin for each second it is in the air.
In the six seconds of hang time typical on the PGA Tour, the initial spin is reduced to between 78 and 82 percent of its initial spin.
When I first read that I thought it said that a shot would lose between 78 to 82 percent of its initial spin in 6 seconds!  I had to read it a couple times to see what it was actually saying.
It seems reasonable to me that a shot beginning with 4000 RPM would land with 3120-3280 RPM.

When reading articles and watching videos on club fitting, the one thing that has always bothered me was the SPIN rhetoric. I never understood why this was such an important aspect of fitting, especially when spin #'s are gathered the second the ball is hit, but not when the ball lands....so i get the driver part of it...and to a certain extent long irons.....but the questions surround your scoring clubs....we see all these spin numbers generated by wedges and 7 irons but does anyone really know how much spin is left on the ball when it hits the green?
from what i gathered, balls lose up to 80% of its spin in a shot with a six second flight.....meaning you hit a wedge from 140 and its in the air for 6 seconds, your 9000 spin number is actually 1800 rpms when it lands.....when trying to fit for wedges and balls, how come this is never discussed?  Also, what spin rate around the green should we be looking for is 1800 relatively high? will 1800 rpms grab on hard greens the same way it does on softer greens?....there is probably close to no spin when chipping off the edge, so does this even matter?
How do you fit for a ball when you have no idea what the greens are like at any given course.....a Prov1 will act different on 30 different greens you play so do we concentrate too much on this #?
Just curious about the whole ball fitting thing because im not sure most people understand what they need to be looking for, namely in scoring clubs....

    any thoughts?

The Ghost & Mrs Muir was with Edward Mulhare & I think Hope Lang a remake from an old B&W movie.  That was an enjoyable tv show. Oh my goodness dating ourselves! 🤣🤣

Yeah it was (and the movie was from 1947). If I remember correctly- the show was in a house on the seaside overlooking a cliff. Yes we ARE dating ourselves but it was a good time (for the most part). I also remember Dark Shadows (w Jonathan Frith as Barnabas Collins) and I Dream of Jeannie and Get Smart, Gilligans Island, Petticoat Junction and...........

Hitting balls is a must for me.  I will always stretch and warm up before I play but I play better and feel better if I have had time to hit at least 10 - 20 full swing balls before I play.  I put that above the chipping and putting if it is a course I know and play frequently.  I do the same as is said by many others with starting with short wedge shots and build my way up to driver.
When I was younger I would stretch and practice swinging and then my first hit on the range would be a 4 or 5 iron to see what a shot on the course might look like if that was my first swing and even when I was young and much better the shot didn't usually turn out to well. Now that I am older I learned that I need the swings and dropped that from my warm up routine.

Chipping, putting, and bunker warm up only, then some stretching.
Don't want to use up all the good shots on the range 😄

There is a local par 3, walk on with no tee times, that I go to. If there is no one behind or if I am held up, I search along edge for balls. I actually now have a 5 gallon bucket of found balls in my truck. I have to walk by the driving range to #1 tee, so I usually take about 10 of those found balls and hit them off before I start. Just seems to stretch a few muscles instead of teeing off completely cold.

I loved that movie @Dweed.  Ghost & Mr. Chicken was on the "Movies!" channel last month. It's still funny! Don Knotts with those quirky moves! 🤣

While playing a wet towel and a stiff brush to get debris out of the grooves. After the round I use the splash caddie on all clubs. I use dawn and water with Mr. Erase on the grips after 5 rounds.

OMG! Is that stuff still around?  I remember an old Don Knotts movie...some sort of ghost in a haunted house where there was an organ playing in the old tower and one character always made reference they tried to clean the blood off the ivory keys, and they even tried Bonami.  Don't ask me why that line stuck with me. But it did. So funny how the mind works.

Always worth reporting to pro shop. They might not do anything but at least you can vent about it. Sad world we live in. Even senior former govt workers feel they can drive the green.

Recently did the swing eval and bought a 5 pack of lessons.
Eval was about 30 min and it was a discussion of goals, how you play, etc.
you hit into a screen and then they overlay the video with how you swing compared to a zero hc. after that it's a bit of a mini lesson (15 min) trying to fix one of the flaws in your swing.
then comes the 'recommendation' from the coach on what he thinks the best plan is for you.
my guy recommended something that would be awesome - I think it was like 10 lessons, some on course, free fitting, etc. - but it was around 2800 dollars (!!!!)
I told him that was a lot more than I was looking for so he asked what I would like and we agreed on a 5 lesson package to start with the eval being free.
I also received a veteran discount and it came to around 400 and change.
Their lessons are 30 min each and I asked why and the answer made sense; they don't want to overwhelm people with too much and would rather them practice one thing for a while.
I've done 2 lessons so far and it's really worked well for me. I'm working strictly on my irons right now and my GIR have gone up, I'm more consistent and my dispersion is tighter.
The good thing is everything is posted online to their "clubhouse" and you can watch your lessons whenever you want. they add some drills to use at home too.
Like everything - you have to practice it. I practice every day in my backyard for about 30-45 minutes and it has helped.
I told my coach that I don't want to swing like a robot and if my angle of this and angle of that aren't precise but within reason then I'm okay and he's doing a good job of abiding by that.
I have 3 more lessons and will probably do them on driver and wedges. You can choose putting too, but I don't plan on doing that.
Overall I'm pleased so far. Hope this helps!

yeah not so much worried about that in terms of this thread. Was more talking about that aspect of my game + the walking taking longer. Would love to walk but being conscious of my play being longer due to looking for balls and more shots makes me feel more obligated just going the cart route.

... High index players "rushing" isn't a bad thing. We all started out playing poorly and felt rushed. As long as you take one practice swing max, and no practice swings after hitting a shot I never mind playing with high index golfers that need a little extra time because they hit more shots or need to search for balls. We were all there. It is easy to be mentally overwhelmed when you first start or shoot high numbers so playing faster which feels like rusing gives you less time to think. Take all the time you want and multiple practice swings at the range but on the course just hit the ball, go find it and hit it again.

Just got done walking 9 with the wife in under2 hours . Try to walk as much as I can. I use a push cart cause the back can’t handle carrying golf bag anymore.
I prefer walking than taking a cart, but a lot of the courses down here are so spread out it makes walking 18 a little difficult (it can be done) so usually take a cart if doing 18.

Trying to get back to walking the course.  I bought an Alphard V2 unit with a Rovic RV1S cart to attach it to using some leftover pro shop credits (covered most of it) so I can walk without having to push or carry clubs around our fairly hilly courses.
Nursing a bum knee right now but looking forward to getting my walking in while playing my favorite pastime!

Nice to see a lot of forum members posting in this thread! Very encouraging, too, as I believe golf IS a walking game..!
I understand course design in some instances makes it impractical to walk, but - maybe the course was not designed well enough...? 🤔
As to the social aspect question - imho there's lots of time for beers and talk after the round. But there's no reason why that can't happen during .. while walking .. if that's what people prefer.
Yes, I also understand that riding carts are a revenue source to the course but consider the flip side -- carts cost money to lease and maintain and to recharge; they cost employee hours to clean out and park in the barn and bring out in the morning; then there are many miles of cart path to pave and maintain; and then, unfortunately, there are a few (expletives deleted) that drive the carts causing damage to fairways and sometimes to greens or their surrounds... 😞
Clubs and courses could rent _nice_ push carts or even electric ones for a reasonable fee .. and should, again imho, be encouraging more people to walk for their health and also for course maintenance considerations.
