OFFICIAL FORUM MEMBER REVIEW - Sentio Sierra 101 Putters

First, I need to thank the entire MGS community, Sentio, and the incredible MGS Staff for putting this opportunity together and allowing me to participate.

Onto the review...

After receiving the Sierra in the mail, I immediately began rolling some putts on the carpet. I noticed it felt nice and firm which is the feeling I prefer. I also noticed that this is not a face insert. Whenever I hear about or see a putter with a face insert, I'm immediately turned off. The inconsistency I've experienced with face insert and they've always felt too soft to me. I ended up getting the firm floating face, and was very glad to see the insert between the face and the body of the putter. The insert makes a nice little alignment aid as it serves as a perpendicular line to the target line, so without noticing the insert at address, I believe it has helped me get setup more square. The putter has a somewhat unconventional look to it. The cavity extends into the bumpers was the most noticeable unconventional part of the appearance. Wasn't a huge issue for me... but I do like a more classic look to a putter. Now, for the good stuff, how did this thing perform? It performed great. Better than great. Incredibly. Here's what I noticed:

Range/practice green:

I'm putting on grass for the first time, line up this 20 footer, take a stab... hot damn, that's the line,... speed looks perfect, internal monologue gets interrupted by the sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup. This is a sign of things to come.

The thing I was most interested in putting to the test was distance control with this putter. How would the floating face perform for more consistent distance control particularly on long putts?

I rolled 100 putts from 20, 30, and 40 feet with the Sentio and with my Bettinardi Studio Reserve JAM Mallet. The results were eye opening.

20 feet results with the Bettinardi:

17 putts made

Average distance to hole: 2ft 7in

Sentio:

26 putts made

Avg distance to hole: 1ft 9in

30 ft:

Bettinardi avg distance to hole: 2 ft 11in

Sentio: 1ft 10in

40 feet

Bettinardi: 3ft 10in

Sentio: 2ft 5in

Are you kidding me? That's literally more than a foot closer to the hole in terms of average dispersion from both 30 & 40 feet. I've never experienced distance control like this. It's consistent, it instilled a ton of confidence at address. If I can get the ball on the right line, I can make the putt. I cannot wait to get this putter on the course.

Course:

This is something I wrote in our PM between the testers:

"I've never experienced this kind of distance control in my life. I sincerely can't tell whether or not it's the "honeymoon phase" with a new putter, or if it's the design. I play some pretty quick greens at my home club... this time of year usually at double digits stimp. I had 26 putts today. No 3 putts. Wasn't knocking it stiff all day, or having up/down tap in situations on more than 4 or 5 holes."

26 putts?!?!!????!!!! That's wild. Not only that, but I've played a half dozen rounds with this putter and haven't had more than 31 putts. Have averaged under 30 putts. It's the best performing putter I've ever had in my hands. I'm absolutely blown away by the distance control I've achieved with this stick. The ball generally goes where I want it to. I don't ever have that putt that's a brain fart and goes 7 feet past the hole or doesn't get halfway to the target.

Performance score: 58 points of 60 points possible

Just one more note on performance. This Sentio unseated my gamer and is now a permanent resident in the bag. I NEVER thought I would putt with anything that wasn't created by Bettinardi or Cameron and approached this very skeptically. I still cannot believe that it performed so well that it left me without a choice.

Sound Looks Feel:

The flavor of face float makes a huge impact here I believe. I was lucky enough to choose correctly based on the questions asked. I think being fitted is going to make all the difference in the world to those in the market for this putter. That being said, the firm option I was outfitted with was perfect for me. It made the right sound, and it felt the way it was supposed to. To me, there's nothing worse than not knowing why a putt comes up 6 ft short because it felt soft and buttery pure off the insert when you struck it. The right amount of feedback is given here, and I'm astonished by the speed control I have with it.

I've talked about looks previously so here's where I'm scoring:

24 points of 25 possible

Likelihood of purchase: 15/15

As long as this configuration of the putter got put in my hands, I would shell out whatever the price tag said. It's a huge leap in putting innovation from where I sit. I'm all in on this idea.

Overall: 97/100

The best review I could ever give a putter.

Congrats gentlemen. I like the look of these putters.

I myself am a mallet putter guy with an Odyssey 2 ball but, like probably most of us on this site, fiddle with putters and want the one putter that sinks 90% of the putts. Looking forward to your reviews and how accurate they are. Just hope the weather where you are allows you to do tons of testing.

Unfortunately, in my limited testing, these putters only sink 89% of the putts so you may need to look elsewhere. 😄 All kidding aside we'll do our best to get some high quality reviews churned out with plenty of testing.

It's all about feel and how it looks to my eye. Form over function in a lot of cases I guess is a good way to put it. For example, those "CURE" putters, I don't care if it guaranteed I'd never 3 jack again, I would have a seriously hard time putting one in my bag.

I'm with you on this. I've tried the Cure putters and I just can't get past the look and feel. This putter on the other hand is a winner in those categories. I read a review thread on this at another forum where people were stating they thought the putter looked cheap based on the pictures they saw. Keep in mind these are people that didn't see it in person. They just looked at a few pics online, but I have to say this putter looks anything but cheap. I showed it around to a few guys at my golf fitter as well and they said it was a nice looking putter. No complaints there especially after I put a new grip on it.

Thanks, mate. I clean mine up a bit in "post-production". My photography is dubious at best.

sentio-header.jpg?w=680

For my second foray into the realm of club reviews, My Golf Spy and Sentio Putters were kind enough to allow me to test out the Sierra 101 S model, "S" being for the soft variety as decided using Sentio's very own Feel Selector option on their web site. If you would like to hear about a more complete overview of my golf game, you can look through my review of the Cobra F6 irons early this year. That aside, I would like to focus more on the art and concept of putting for this first installment. Prior to receiving the new flat-stick, I did a bit of homework on the company, which I've tucked away in the Putter Forum for those that are interested or wanting a bit of background on Jim and his company.

sentio13.jpg

I had received an email from Jim Varney, Sentio President, letting me know that my putter was in the final stages of construction. A nice personal touch, in my opinion, and I was provided tracking info as soon as the package entered the postal system. The packaging was high quality with custom cut foam, plastic wrapped grip, and a letter from Jim himself. The level of investment on his part is evident in both the effort and the quality of the product.

sentio12.jpg

The first thing that really caught my attention out of the box was the weight and balance of the putter. You know when you first pick a putter off the rack and it has a certain vibe to it before you set it to address? These were good vibes fresh out of the wrapping, like a finely made sword that feels different from those you've wielded previously. At a head weight of 350g, I didn't expect such a noticeable difference from my current gamer, an Odyssey Metal-X #5CS weighing in at 343g with a mid-mallet design. The address and practice swing felt effortless. Again, good vibes out of the box, which is inspiring.

sentio11.jpg

Going from a mid-mallet to a blade isn't a big transition for me as I previously used a YES! Tracey III Plus for about two years. Following a three-day golf trip earlier in the spring, which produced some atrocious putting results on my behalf, I switched my grip to the left-hand-low method and started using the ol' #5CS in the process. Having become comfortable with the new grip, the switch back to a blade-style putter was inevitable. The Sierra felt as if I had used it before, which again inspires a sort of confidence you usually have to build up with a new putter.

sentio4.jpg

The Dynamic Response technology, Sentio's patented construction where the face is completely isolated from the rest of the putter by a dampening polymer core, is every bit as responsive as you would want from the face. The sound off the face is very clean and the ball comes off smooth. I also like that if you're using a brightly colored ball, you can see it through the colored polymer when holding the club over the ball during address. That's a beneficial feature for me as my pre-shot routine includes a practice swing over the top of ball in an effort to align the face to my selected putting line.

sentio5.jpg

Another beneficial feature is the space that houses the sight-line is roughly the width of the ball, which I like to use as an alignment aid.

sentio1.jpg

As you can see, the MIM & CNC milled 304 stainless steel face and orged & CNC milled 303 stainless steel body blend nicely as a whole. The Satin Silver PVD finish doesn't seem to be terribly reflective either, which was a problem I had with my previous YES! brand blade.

sentio2.jpg

The head features 2 degrees face loft, a full offset plumber hosel, a 72 degrees lie angle, and 4:00 toe hang which is very comfortable even though my stroke is predominately straight-back-straight-through.

sentio3.jpg

The stock grip is a PURE mid-size grip, which is a bit larger than the Golf Pride Players Wrap I've been using. I like the feel though, and the custom Sentio marking really stands out as they match the grip color to the firmness level. Its the little things, after all.

sentio8.jpg?w=311&h=355&crop=1sentio6.jpg?w=181&h=355&crop=1

The included headcover is embroidered and features a soft interior with what feels like a waterproof exterior. If I had to pick out one complaint, it would be the velcro enclosure. I was hoping for magnetic, simply to ensure longevity.

sentio9.jpg?w=280&h=286&crop=1sentio10.jpg?w=212&h=286&crop=1

I haven't had a chance to take this beauty outside yet, what with the weather and the holidays, but rest assured it will be covered in the next couple stages. Thanks again to My Golf, Spy, Sentio Putters, and the forum community for this opportunity. Stay tuned for more and please ask any questions below.

Nice job Joey E!

I enjoyed the heck out of reading all the stage one threads.  Mighty good stuff guys and I love the pics!   Those are really some sharp looking putters and if they perform on par with the looks part, they will be in show nuff demand.  Thanks for setting us up for the journey..

Enjoyed the Stage Ones, DJ and X!!

DJ. I know I've said this before. But we gotta get you up to Compass Pointe for a round. We can take our very near identical bags out. LOL

I'm glad the EVNRoll reviews helped in your decision on the ER5. Even more glad to hear, it's paying off for you.

Thanks homie. First time I've ever formally reviewed anything other than a scathing yelp on the service dept that ruined my Tahoe a year ago... which was more of a means to an end.

Looking forward to getting stage 2 up. This is a sweet stick.

Good stuff. I feel like a kid Christmas morning watching the toys being opened, not my toys but my brothers. What I love about these tests is that you have 6 guys going through 4 stages. Of the 6 testers one will be close to your handicap or ability so you can get a virtual feel for the product through his hands.
