Handicaps

I run our weekly buddies game. Usually just a $20 buy in. We have that one guy that has the questionable hdcp. Either never posts or only posts the higher scores. Every week we have to embarrass him into posting to GHIN and it's never a comfortable conversation.  How to you guys manage your groups and handicaps?  Here are my options:  

1.  Leave him out of the game.

2.  We do the adjust and tell him he's playing to a xxx.

If I was part of your group and he played, I'd opt out of future games, so definitely #1. It sends a clear message "no sandbaggers" allowed.

Keep the group's handicaps based ONLY on scores recorded during the weekly competitions. (ignore GHIN or other official handicaps)

Helps the person that has a "tendency" to shoot high scores all week but has a "great" day during the competition. (seems to be  lot of these guys)

Also helps the person that has low scores when playing outside of competition but struggles with nerves when in competition. (not as many of these - but they do exist)

Sort of evens out those opposite players and pulls them closer to the normal players and helps keep everyone happier.

I've been in groups that simply disinvite cheaters.

Agreed. This is what I did when I ran my companies work leagues. Scorecards were turned in and scores were entered into a spreadsheet. We had a formula in there to establish handicaps. There was no way of getting around it. No sandbagging or cheating the handicap by not posting.

I have an issue with someone who's inclined to cheat during a buddies game with a fairly small buy in. If you can't be honest with your buddies and have to cheat when you're with them just to win a few bucks, that's not necessarily a person I'd want to keep playing with.

Agree! Best club I ever played in worked this way and it made for a fair game.

I don't think I'd want to be friends with a guy that cheats to get $20 out of his "friends" so I'd just stop playing with him.  But I like the idea mentioned of keeping a separate handicap just for your money games.

Or do any business dealings with him, either!   Sandbagging a handicap (or any other cheating)in golf tells me a LOT about a person's character.
