Sluggo42 Posted September 30, 2022 Share Posted September 30, 2022 We all grip the club, but in many different ways. Strong, weak, neutral, overlap, interlock, no lock, and baseball right? I’ve stumbled on a grip that’s new to me, but very effective. I touched upon it in my daily report, but wanted to try giving a better description in this section. My normal grip used to be a very neutral overlap. I took some lessons back in April, and my instructor wanted me to strengthen my grip, but it always kind of felt funny, turning your hands over to the right, in order to see a few left hand knuckles, and I always eventually went back to a neutral grip. about 6 months ago, I made the radical change to an interlock grip from the overlap grip, that felt insanely weird at first, and actually made my pinkie hurt for a few months. But the entire grip felt steadier and more “as one”. So every day when I warm up in the morning, I always swing my yellow whip back and forth with a baseball grip, and I always felt like I could really rip a swing with that, right up until it was time to actually hit the ball, then I would go to my normal interlock grip and fire away. But in the back of my mind, the baseball grip was always lingering. so a few days ago, I decided to create a hybrid grip that included a normal, fairly neutral right hand, and a baseball grip left hand, and then married the two hands with the interlock fingers. All I can say is wow. The combined grip is very near to the regular interlocked grip, with the only difference being the left had thumb. It now curls around the club instead lying on top, cradled in the palm of the right hand. It feels kind of goofy the first few swings, but quickly begins to feel very secure and correct. the result of this grip is that it really forces the club to get back to where you set it up, and at impact, really drives the ball on your intended target line. It eliminates the leaky fade, and actually helps promote a nice little draw, if that’s how you set up. Otherwise, it’s kind of a super straight laser beam. It feels very natural and confident. It might not be an “approved” grip for the majority, but I’ve been experiencing phenomenal results so far, but granted it’s only been a few rounds. If you feel like your grip just doesn’t inspire a solid strike, it can’t hurt to give it a try, right? I play an interlock grip. Recently I have "weakened" my right hand (I used to have a VERY strong right hand grip). So if I take my normal interlock grip, then move my left thumb underneath the right hand... bingo... Hybrid grip? I will have to give that a try. I should also mention that I played many years in my early golf life with a full on baseball grip (transitioned to golf when I finished playing college ball), so I'm not completely unfamiliar with the 10 finger grip :). Is it wrapped around the grip toward the underside or laying on the right side of the grip? I play an interlock grip and my coach had me make some adjustments back when I started working with him. My left thumb sits along the right side of the grip (when looking down the grip), kind of in the middle of my right palm. I don't think my fat thumb would be able to wrap towards the underside of the grip without being in the way of the right hand, but sitting in that crease in the middle of the hand, guess it's called the thenar crease feels solid for me. As far as I'm concerned, grip changes are one of the worst experiences to go through because they feel so awkward and get in my head so much that everything gets thrown off. From that point on every part of the swing feels foreign. I agree with the comment about the club getting back to square... that I had no issue turning the clubhead over through the swing. Hard to tell resulting shot shapes into the net, but I hit a few powerful and solid feeling shots... I'll give it a go next time I have a range session. I am playing tomorrow, but not sure I'm ready to unleash this beast on the course yet.. haha. Interesting concept though! Good on ya Sluggo!!. Unconventional? Sure. If it works for you... why not? Yea I did it while at the range, and it surprised me how powerful it is. Shot shapes are straight, or a baby draw, depending on where the face is aimed when you lock it up. another part is how you lay the right hand on the club too, as well as how deep into your palm you take it. I’m kind of a little bit more in the fingers. Funny thing is I’m wearing new spots on my right hand ring finger, could blister if I take too many swings. it was very difficult to take it “live” if you will, but I had an opportunity to roll a practice round first time out, and it blew me away with how many great shots it hit. First real round I went -2, but second round was a +6, but the grip wasn’t the problem with that round. The most note worthy aspect was the end of the “leaky” weak fades. From driver to partial wedges. And accuracy is definitely improved… I’ll keep with it and continue to post results. If it goes sour, I’ll pass that along too, I don’t want anyone blowing chunks then blaming the “Hansons Hybrid grip”, ya know what I mean? I recently started gripping my driver that way and it's been very very good. And this action suddenly makes another left hand knuckle visible without having to rotate the right hand to the strong position… does that make sense? Bang60 Posted October 3, 2022 Share Posted October 3, 2022 I had a interlock grip and got changed a year ago to overlap grip, now interlock grip feels weird but think I may try interlock grip again because overlap is not better. Can you post a photo, I just can't picture it in my mind... Absolutely yes- another perk of it is it saves your thumb joints, if yours are worn out like mine are. I go left and setup with the face open to stop that but don't remember to do it every strike, but with your grip change maybe that will work? From the thread it sounds like it's every club, and is now your default grip - but wanted to clarify in case I missed something. I'm so tempted to go put up the net in the back yard just to try it out. I'm at my desk right now putting my left thumb up, then down, then up , then down - trying to feel the difference, lol. knotthead17 Posted April 26, 2023 Share Posted April 26, 2023 I have switched back-and-forth from interlock to overlap over the years. Playing well with both, never really having a favorite. I guess I've played with a little more overlap than interlock that's probably just cause that's what you're supposed to do… I'll have to try this out next time I'm on the range. grip changes can be really difficult but I found after practicing with many different grips I can function with a wide variety now As far as what's right or not, who cares what it looks like or if it has a name or not. Feels strange loose grip and right hand feels high on the shaft which was great for my SIM driver with Widex'll L flex shaft, I'm going to practice more with @sluggo42 grip, feels promising.. Bang60 Posted April 28, 2023 Share Posted April 28, 2023 Today the body feels abit sore so just 100 metres shots and green side putting, used @Sluggo42 grip with a twist lol.. Used my 8 iron that has a Ladies grip still because I've not used it, decided to add a Tennis grip on the Mizuno grip as it's small and slippery. After 20 strikes I was hitting ok, it did feel dead though so may try again or not but after my Tourney next week... I have a problem with turning over my right hand through impact and end up topping the ball or hitting it off the hosel. Okay - so quick update from the range from Friday - completely forgot to post this earlier! I tried this grip, quite a few times, and just COULDN'T get comfortable. I know some of that is just the 'left thumb in right palm' feeling is so, so ingrained, that it will take some getting used to the opposite feeling, but I think it was so foreign I couldn't seem to get past it to get a good swing on the balls. However, I'm not a quitter, so I'll definitely be trying again the next time I'm at the range. Hoping to work this a little bit each time to see if there's any noticeable differences in contact.
