How hot is too hot?

How hot it too hot to play?

  1. 1. Dealing with the summer heat, going to be 116 on Saturday in parts of Northern California, and people flaking on tee times because it's too hot got me thinking.... how hot is too hot?

We played today and it was 110F (114F out now) when we finished the round at 1115. The old "it's a dry heat" notion is somewhat true but with all the watering of the courses, it can feel lots more humid.  Everyone's tolerance for heat (and cold) differs but for me, temps >110F get my too hot vote.

It's a swampy humid 90* here today.  At least it's mostly cloudy which knocks a bit of bite out of it.

... It's unpleasant just getting out of the car to go in a store at 118* but at least I don't break out in a heavy sweat with 19% humidity. Admittedly I am not a meteorologist but I understand the dew point is much more indicative of the moisture in the air than humidity. Dew points are normally in the mid 40's here but this summer they are around 60* and today 51*.

Being the desert rat that I am, I've become accustomed to 100+ temps. I don't mind the 105's and the such occasionally, but once you pass the 110's.....no freaking thanks. It makes for a miserable round. Did one in Tucson at 114 and I will never do that again.

You know its humid when you have to start opening the face because you know the humidity is going to grab the hozzle and shut the face!

I don't know that I've ever played a round that was "too hot" - I love hot weather. I had one a couple years back that was 98 with humidity. I just made sure that the beers and Gatorade were on a 1:1 basis and was fine. The deputy sheriff I was playing with did not follow that ratio and ended up cramping up on #16 and getting some IV's later in the day.

I saw 127 in Kuwait and would probably call that the upper limit of doing anything outside, that was actually pretty miserable with the humidity. I spent a lot of time at NAS El Centro and MCAS Yuma, and I was one of the idiots out running at 105, it just doesn't bother me that much. Probably because winter here absolutely sucks; -30 with wind is a real ball breaker and makes me appreciate the heat.

I don't know if it was the highest temperature I ever played in (I think that was a trip to Utah - no humidity!), but the worst I ever felt was a trip to French Lick, IN, over the Fourth of July. It was 105° with high humidity, and I was ready to quit at the turn, but surprisingly my wife said she wanted to finish. Never have I ever wanted to quit when she wanted to keep going!

I hear ya Taylor.  We could also ask the question "how cold is too cold?"  I was playing at Bridger Creek in Bozeman, MT a few years ago and overheard a Titleist rep at the range talking with buddies.  He was a born and raised Bozeman-ite who had moved to Scottsdale, AZ for work.  He was saying that "at least in AZ I can truly play golf year round" and "that while summers can be scorchers, one can usually get a round in before it's too hot".  My wife and I had already started looking into relocating to AZ and this tidbit resonated with me.  It is very true.

I recall a round (one that I posted on the forum), playing Madison Meadows in Ennis, MT, in late September, wearing blue jeans and thermals in 36F, snow flurries, and 15+mph wind.  The pro shop knew I always walked the course and simply said "not today Bill, take a power cart on the house... we don't want to have to rescue you". 😆

  • 2 weeks later...

Went to Branson in August last year and the heat index was 115* +.  Everyone was cramping and sweating through their gloves.  Didn't think it was possible but entirely too hot, beer got warm in 5min and all you wanted to drink was a body armor or pickle juice.  Great time though and i would do it again lol

Physically I can stand hotter temps in short spurts, but as a bigger dude, the threat of heatstroke means if we're going over 90 I'm going to try and stay inside

I'd personally rather it be too hot than too cold.

I've played a couple of rounds in the Orlando and Tampa areas in July and it's not pretty.  Sunscreen-loaded sweat runs into your eyes as you line up a birdie putt.   Everything you wear immediately goes into the wash.

It's been warmer than normal in the Pittsburgh area this summer and I did bail on one round last month because the Real Feel temp was going to be around 105 with bad air quality.
