Very cool! It looks like we have musical instruments in common too?  I'm a band director in public school.
Love playing the saxophone! Not my main instrument, but I have a Yamaha YAS62 that is really nice.
I often wondered why Yamaha didn't get into  golf club-making...

I have loved my Cleveland CBX, CBX2, & Zipcore wedges.
    I've got at 48 Zip, a 54 CBX2, and my original CBX in a 60 deg.
When I saw the CBX4 article, I set my sights on replacing the 60 with one
if it's not radically different from my CBX2.
I am very much looking forward to trying them out in the next week or two!

I used to be picky, nowadays not as much. I’ve realized that a ome of my lowest rounds or even my one Ace were played with cheap balls I had found in the woods. I like the idea of being “Green” and recycling, My home course is a ball eating machine with water along 15/18 holes. So I also like the idea of being frugal as well since many of my balls are “donated” to the course over 60 rounds I play there a year. (I play all my ProV’s on easier courses) I’ve used Lostgolfballs several times buying the Mint or near mint with zero complaints.

so here is where I currently stand-
last year I found a guy locally who has family that are grounds keepers at  several courses in the area. They bring  found balls to his garage every day where he cleans & sorts them and puts them in Tupperware bins in sets of 50.
His garage walls are stacked floor to ceiling with every ball brand and model you could imagine. I’m like a kid in a candy store there. I’ll tell you this, it’s a super cheap way to try many different balls till you find the ball that meets your needs. Now for me, I’ve found that I can hit a titleist tour speed into the water and not get frustrated cause I only paid .70 cents for it.

I know it’s not for everyone, but I’d say give ‘em try. It’s a small investment if you don’t like the used balls.

I can report that I have had success with this as well. Admittedly, I thought for sure last year when I paid for the plan, it might not work out. But, I kept my receipts and in the 11th month took a pair in as evidence and they just let me walk out of the store with the identical new replacements.
no questions asked. It was a good deal!

Well these  are extremely wonderfully strangely designed putters that will cost you nearly $40… that is almost all of my monthly husband allowance.

Okay, now that I have your attention, I'm asking if any of you keep differently weighted putters to use (same putter for a full round) at a course based on that course's green speeds.
So, a few of the courses I play have lightning-fast greens where I blow my putts with my heavy mallet Taylormade putter 12 feet past the hole and I end up three-putting myself into convulsions.  The next time I play, I might be at a cheaper Muni course that is fun but the greens roll at what seems like an 8.
I play all over in the summer, and admittedly, I should be able to "adjust" accordingly, but lately, I just can't lighten it up enough.
I'm considering getting a lightweight putter to offset my preferred heavy mallet for the courses I play that have that marble countertop feel to them.
I plan to keep it in my trunk and make a decision of which putter to use for the round based on what course I'm at.
Would love to hear your thoughts.

Let's petition the R&A and USGA to increase the 14 club rule to 15 by allowing 2 putters.  We have many clubs to deal with different course conditions, but we are basically stuck with only 1 putter despite wide variety of green speeds over 18 holes.

I find better results with a heavier putter on fast greens, and conversely, a lighter putter on slower greens.  With that said I use the heavier GoLo Select with 25 gram weights most days.  I like the overall feel of the heavier putter.  You need a shorter stroke, hence less dispersion for me.

Over the years I have tried multiple  putters  and always go back to my old taylormade  my opinion is that how can you go out one day and play with a light putter and the next with a heavy one there is no continuity  to your game  the putter  is the most important  club in your bag

I agree!  It has taken me about two winters of 200-250 putts a week, for Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, to get to the point where it feels like I am making a consistent stroke with the putter I have had for 10 years! And feeling like I am finally putting better than before.   I can't imagine switching between putters  of differing weights course to course, but if you think it will help, give it a try.

Yep, there is a feel aspect to golf and feel controls how you deliver the club at impact.   This is why everyone plays different clubs, has different characteristics for those clubs, and why it is strongly encouraged that you get fit for your equipment.  These feel things are done to match up with the properties of physics that can’t be overcome or changed.  Ultimately, do what you want to do, if 1000 people told you not to change putters but it feels right to you then just do it.

IMO, switching putters due to green speed is kind of like switching clubs because it is windy.   If you have a putter that “feels” good and has been fit to your stroke the green speed shouldn’t matter; we make adjustments for uphill and downhill putts without changing our putter.   Practice and pre round feel calibration is how I’d recommend managing green speeds.

... Russ, I am beginning to think music on the course is similar to the parable of the blind men and the elephant. The group all touching a different part of the elephant and thinking the others are just so wrong. I have certainly heard groups playing music loudly that I can hear from at least a fairway over but it is not an every round occurrence. It is almost always companied by copious amounts of alcohol and rap or country.

... There is a generation that have grown up in a bubble surrounding them radiating out from their phones in a 6 foot circle. hard to blame them as they grew up in an age of technology with most everything at their fingertips. Many are just completely unaware of the world around them. I have been paired up with quite a few that have no concept at all of groups in front or behind them, just themselves and their friends. Leaving the tee on a par 5 while the group in front are walking off the green, they don't hesitate to stop the cart girl and take their time ordering their drinks. And some are playing music easily heard from 100 yds away. Don't hate the player, hate the game. If confronted, which has happened a few times they are not apologetic but offended someone entered their personal bubble.

... And before throwing stones at the younger generation, I have also experienced Boomers that are older, angry and bitter that know better but just don't give a sh!t. They are gonna smoke cigars and play music and if you don't like it go cry to mommy ya snowflake.

... I have said more than a few times here the best of both worlds is playing music you can hear from 6 feet away and if everyone in your group loves music on the course, 20 feet away. Music is an accompaniment for me and I don't need to hear it while teeing off, hitting shots or putting, just between shots while walking or riding. Because I love music and it makes me happy. But I also completely understand those that prefer the sound of silence. It always come down to understanding we are all different and being respectful of those around you.

I read an interesting post from a putting instructor.   The intent of weight change seems to be to control weight so you are making the same stroke size and tempo no matter the green stimp.  If you look at the physics of this, it takes it takes about 300 grams of weight difference to adjust to 1 stimp/1 foot.   Based on some math with a 300 gram putter going 10 feet, a 400 gram putter would go 10.337’ .  To me does’t seem like an effective way to control distance.

I had same idea.  I putt cross handed and have 3 face balanced putters.  A heavy Scotty Futura X, circa 2015, a David Musty wood mallet, and a freebie, a K-mart Precise lightweight in style of a fang.   I learned basics of cross handed from Spieth in 2015, but it took years to figure out what to do with my front, left, hand.  My scores don't prove much, but I found out I putt similar style to Brian The Killer Harman, many congrats to him.  Although I look at the hole or line on putts longer than about 7 feet, and my follow through looks like a full swing.  I bring the club head almost shoulder high.
Now, weights:  makes sense to choose a heavier or lighter depending on the greens you face any given day. But I also finally found out earlier this year, the fat grips are way better than regular.  It stabilizes the hand.  Much less twist of the hand.  So for a while I used Scotty with a medium width grip, not a full fat one.  I put a Super Stroke Pistol 2.0 or 3.0 onto the cheap Kmart putter and love it.  But I like the heavier Scotty so I will either put a fat grip on it, or maybe also a hi-tech shaft, like the new Mamiya stable All-in or a new mallet with fat grip and hi-tech shaft.

I’m currently using conventional grip but when I go switch over to cross handed I find a putter with full shaft offset neck and thicker round grips feels more comfortable for my eye alignment
im using a goose neck with no offset and a thin pistol grip Thsy combo works for me with conventional reverse overlap grip

Admittedly, I really struggle on slower greens. It used to be the other way around but over the years I’ve become most comfortable with green speeds around 11-12. My league course is probably closer to a 9 and I just can’t make myself swing hard enough when I have putts over 20 feet. Last week I started the round with 4 three putts. But to your question, using a heavier putter doesn’t really help because I subconsciously adjust my swing due to the weight. In the end, I just have to be mentally stronger when playing in different courses.

I am a band director and have a few thoughts on music on the course.
One half of me says- let the good times roll with the caveat your music isn’t too loud & fairly clean. Yiu and your friends should have a nice time while being respectful to your surroundings.
Now the inner competitive side of me says shut that crap down! I’m trying to draw a 6 iron around an oak tree in the fairway and I need to concentrate.

While I get 40-50 hours of music playing and listening in a week, I do prefer the sounds of nature while on the course. However, I can attest to this, If the music is relaxing and the right style/tempo, it can possibly help your swing tempo and help you forget about all those pesky swing thoughts clouding your mind on the Tee. Bob Marley and Chris Stapleton have definitely helped me pure a few shots that I may have otherwise psyched myself out for otherwise.
Whatever side of the fence you sit on, I hope you enjoy your round this week.
