Likely going to end up with a TSi3 after today's fitting. Better on misses with the TSi over the SIM Max, getting my misses out there 250 total is something that I could definitely benefit from. Gonna go again in a couple weeks because she wanted me to try the stock Tensei 65 at 45" but didn't have it in her fitting bag. Surprised to end up in the 3 because I would've fit myself in a 2, however it was spinning too much. We completely eliminated the left side of the range which is another bonus. Told me to turn it over as much as I could and it resulted in a nice 10y draw from center!

As usual with the HZRDUS line, it felt like a board for my weak noodle arms and I couldn't launch the ball.

Testers still hitting bombs and enjoying your drivers after the honeymoon phase?

Nice! I am still enjoying mine. I think it checks every box that a driver can check, and the level of adjustability for the fitter to get me dialed in makes me feel confident that I have a club well-suited for me.

That's not to say it's got any magic properties! I had a rough day this weekend off the tee on a tough course (Barona Creek), and I actually switched to 3w for the back nine because it was dry and rolling out plenty. I think it was more related to the margaritas I had on Friday night before the early Saturday round though 😐.

Really like the look of that TSi3. I played a similar sized Taylormade Rescue years ago, which the new SIM2 hybrid fits in as well. Would love to give both of these. Have the 816 H1 19 and 21, but wish I went with the H2 for that smaller size.

Funny, I went with the H2 and it has been a good club for me, but now I am wondering if the TSi2 hybrid would be more appropriate for me than the TSi3 or the SIM2 rescue. Can't wait to run all three of those through the paces and maybe even compare vs. a 5/7 wood before pulling the trigger.

  3. Got out on Torrey Pines yesterday, south course. It was so foggy (<75 yds of visibility) we had to yell out all clear to the group behind when leaving the green for the first 7 holes before it burned off. The conditions made for quite a challenging start, plus those fairways are so tiny right now! I actually drove the ball well but still only found 5 fairways, with a few that were thisclose to the short grass but nestled down in the thick stuff. They had cut the rough down from the Farmers tourney in most places, but it's still extremely thick, wet, and penalizing.

The highlight of my day was all TSi: on the par 5 #18 I hit a nice high, tight fade that peeled off of the left bunkers into the left side of the fairway at about 280 total distance. Then from 244 out, on an upslope and needing 230+ to carry the pond to a back right pin location, I hit probably the smoothest, purest feeling 3 wood I have ever hit; it elevated easily off of the upslope with the babiest of baby draws, carried around 235, took one soft bounce and settled ~20 ft below the hole for an eagle putt. I missed that slider low but tapped in for a closing birdie and 38 on the back for an 82. It was one of those shots that literally makes your entire day (although hitting on a Tampa Bay & under parlay was a nice nightcap 😄).

I'm still loving the TSi3 driver but the TSi2 3 wood is quickly becoming my favorite club in the bag. I have never had this much confidence in a fairway wood.

  4. I played the black in 2019 for a while before switching to the X which is the only ball I've played since the start of 2020. I did not notice any launch differences between the two FWIW. I did notice a bit higher spin from the X across the whole bag (possibly too high for some off the tee - YMMV).

I liked the feel of the black, but I usually prefer a firmer feel, and think they've dialed it in 1000% better in the X than they had it in the Red (which was no bueno on looks + feel + performance).

I don't think it's the perfect ball, but when I'm buying in bulk at $27 per dozen and supporting a small business in my native MA, they're plenty good enough for me.

  5. I picked up better launch and forgiveness switching my 3W from Epic Flash SZ to a TSi2. The shaft made a lot of difference on the launch (from Atmos black to AD-IZ), but the TSi seems to be consistently more forgiving for me. BUT I still haven't sold the Epic yet because she has been a good one for me especially off the tee... I need to be 300% sure before totally moving on from a 3 wood.

I am thinking about upgrading my 818 h2 hybrid to a more forgiving TSi2 this year, but I think I will test out a 5w/7w as well just to make sure. Why? Well I've never used a higher loft fairway wood before (>16*), and quite frankly, I kindof just want to use a higher lofted fairway wood.

    Well, it happened.

Just blew some gift certificate money from Christmas to get a TSI3 to replace the old EFSZ.

Hard to compare the two since I have been playing an oversized or jumbomax grip on the EFSZ, and the TSI3 had a standard grip and shaft that wasn’t my Ventus black velocore.

That said, while distance was better with my gamer, dispersion was much better with the TSI3 (there were lots of mishits on both clubs lol) and that was despite the fact that every swing felt uncomfortable given the grip (which tbf has been the case when testing any standard size grip club for me since I switched to midsize with extra wraps or jumbomax)

getting everything swapped out and looking forward to hitting it once my regular shaft and grip are in. I know this is a poor way to self-fit, but there was something about it, it looked so mean, I just know it’s gonna rip on the course

I couldn't beat EFSZ ball speeds with the TSi3 either, but similar to you, my dispersion was much better with the TSi.

I'm not doing anything to my driver/3w setup any time soon, but I do wonder if the new Epic line would maintain a ball speed advantage over TSi while upping the stability/forgiveness factor...

  7. I've run through all the threads on WRX and nothing yet on the 125 stiff, but that should change soon enough. Have seen less chatter about them on here, but maybe I am missing something.

It doesn't seem like it's going to be easy to do until maybe later this year, but I'd love to test out the stiff vs. TX in a fitting.

I will verify first, but assuming one of these does work for me, the first OEM to include these as an option will likely get my business. Callaway offering the MMT 105 as a stock(!) option for the new Apex Pro means they are my bet to be first to offer the 125s.

  8. Great review @chisag! I had been curious to see if these overtook the T100s for you. I definitely plan to give them another look as I continue my 2021 quest to find my perfect next set of irons.

If you could combine the look & performance of the MIMs with the feel of Forged Tour, would you? Or has the MIM grown on you enough that you prefer its feel over the Forged Tour?

The MMT will be coming out with a 125 Stiff reasonably soon, or so is the word.  They were to be out end of last year, but pandemic affects everything....

I just read through the giant wrx thread on the MMTs and am pretty excited about this development. I know a lot of the Steelfiber, Recoil, MMT, etc. seem to play stiff to flex, but the extra weight is what I really need to keep my transition at least reasonable. That 125 stiff, whenever it arrives, seems like a potentially good comp to my $ Taper 130x.

Not sure what flex you are looking for and not to offer something not in the title but the MMTs have a 125 option, but that is only a TX flex, but there is a 105 in x as well which would be close to the 110 in Recoils.

Interesting thanks for the info. Even with a quick rhythm and transition, my sub-110 swing speed likely can't handle a TX. Maybe if it were soft stepped, though...worth bringing up when I ultimately get an iron fitting.

  11. I am planning to test out both of these this year before taking the plunge on my next set of irons. It's going to be strange coming from a 130g steel shaft but my surgically repaired wrist is telling me that a switch should probably happen sooner rather than later.

Planning to test out the 125g offerings in each, since I think I still need as much weight as possible to mitigate my tendencies. Do any of the OEMs offer the 125g in either brand?

  12. I've got my eyes on Apex Pros, think they look fantastic (if they just removed that "tungsten" wording from the cavity it would be perfect IMO).

It's amazing how many options there are now for "players" irons that pack in technology to help distance and/or forgiveness. I might be testing stuff out all year before actually pulling the trigger on something lol.

Been hitting the gym hard and working on some speed stick training...I think it’s time to get on track man again and see some more numbers this week!! See if I can get the TSi3 kicked up a notch

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

I need to do the same. 2020 was a rough year for me fitness-wise and my club/ball speeds when testing out the TSi and my Epic/other drivers this fall were enlightening, and not in a good way.

  14. The golf seasons blend together here in sunny San Diego, but for 2021 I am counting my recent tester TSi3 courtesy of MGS, and I also just added a TSi2 3w. The metals and wedges/putter should be set for quite a while (I hope), but just for kicks I also picked up a cheap MIM 52* to mess around with a 3 wedge setup that would allow me to include hybrid and DI in the bag for more options off the tee.

That should get me through 2021 (but never say never when it comes to golf spending 😐)

For next year, as technology-packed irons get smaller, and as becoming a father in 2020 meant less practice and fewer rounds, I am interested in a set of irons with a bit more forgiveness than my Cobra CBs - they are still performing just fine, and the DBM finish is in excellent shape even after 80+ rounds, but on my bad days I could use a little more help. I plan to test a few of the new models that are already out, but am keeping a close eye on iBlade and T100 replacements that I think will come out in the second half of the year.

Like I said - it depends on how you load the shaft. The KBS Tour EI curve in red compared to the PX LZ in blue. (KBS Tour V in brown for comparison).

It also depends on how Titleist are measuring their shafts - the KBS Tour is famously incrementally stiffer along it's length as the EI curve demonstrates quite nicely with a rather flat linear style curve. If you measure from mid point to the tip, it will be stiffer overall as Titleist suggest. The PX LZ is much stiffer initially in the tip but then dips before flattening out in the middle - it may well be measured at a lower cpm because of this contrast from tip to mid. Again, the same story plays out in the mid to butt measurement as it is stiffer it an increase towards the butt - however again the contrast could be measured as lower in cpm. Think of two stiff sections connected by a more flexible middle (like the Nunchuck). The KBS Tour on the other hand has a more lateral flex increase and flatter EI curve, meaning the difference in measured tip to mid, and mid to butt sections appear to measure stiffer in cpm. Overall butt frequency will measure as stiffer too.

But it how the shaft profile plays that makes the difference. Smooth swingers with a smooth transition, but with an early release will see lower flight and spin than someone with a later release with the PX LZ. Harder transitions will be more thankful of the butt and tip stiffness of PX LZ in terms of launch and spin control for the same release. It all depends on the load and release how the shaft reacts.

Titleists graphic probably covers how average joe would expect to see it play on paper, but even they qualify it with a caveat to get fitted. You can't take everything on paper as face value if you haven't tried it for yourself. The specs are really too close to call it one way or another on overall performance. This is a classic example of this.

This is great color, thanks for sharing. I don’t know that anything will kick my $ tapers out of the bag any time soon but it’s always cool to learn about comparisons across brands/lines that go deeper than said brands’ 2 sentence descriptions.

  16. I ripped the TSi3 at the range and in my round last week. I feel like I am out of the honeymoon phase and we have only had one minor tiff so far.

Also, the TSi2 15* came in the mail. The sound isn't quite as sweet as the TSi3 driver, but not bad by any means and it seems like it's going to be a great addition to the bag. I'm going to give it a little time before I sell my Epic Flash SZ 3w because it's been a pretty good one for me (much better than the driver), but if all goes well I will be going forward with the TSi metals for at least a couple of years.

  17. Of course I had my two worst driving rounds since receiving the TSi this weekend, right after I finished my review. So this isn't a magic wand we're talking about (in case that wasn't clear based on my glowing review)! 😐

That said, I still think this club/shaft combo mitigates the worst of my misses. Was it enough to avoid a few lost balls this weekend? No, but that was because my swing was that bad...as evidenced by the irons being crap too. Oh well; two more rounds lined up for 2020 to get it back on track.
