Dynacraft Driving Iron Review

I want to start this off by saying that I am USUALLY a hybrid player. I never could find a utility iron that I could hit better than my hybrids. The problem I had with hybrids was high launch and the bulge and roll would sometimes make my misses far worse than normal. I just couldn't find an iron that could compete with my less than consistent striking.

Then an I took a chance on a Dynacraft Driving Iron over a year ago. I had wanted to try something different, but all the major brands had irons that didn't work for me. So I bought an assembled Dynacraft Driving Iron for about $35 from Hireko. It was a 21* with FST 115 stiff shaft. At first I didn't use it much, but it grew on me slowly. I honestly love the look of it now, in my bag and at address.

The offset set on the club is what I would call moderate, not off-putting in the least. I was surprised with the look at address as it lines up nicely. It is not gigantic, I feel like I can work the ball and am not using super-mega game-improvement Iron like some you see.

The feel is what surprised me the most. I get a lot of feedback on mishits but no pain in the hands or wrists, just enough to know exactly where on the face I struck the ball. The feel on center strikes is just as good as any other manufacturer. Not buttery smooth obviously, this club is designed to get the ball up and forward and is hollow, so it sounds/feels like a well designed helping iron should. Reminds me of the feel I used to get off my Adams super s DHY I had.

At at first I only used this on windy days to replace my hybrid, but I now have replaced my hybrids altogether. It is easy to launch, high or penetrating, but not as high as a hybrid. I can still stop it on the other end as I get about 1k more backspin. My distance is exactly the same, 200 yards average, but with much lower distance dispersion than my hybrid. Only about 10 yards from shortest to longest, instead of 20.

Overall i I have been very pleased, and just ordered the 18* as well to my arsenal. I would give it a try if you are in the market.

Very interesting. At that price I may have to build one of these and check it out.

I have one of these guys. It's a nice club but I have a hard time hitting it in the air. I got a new Adams Pro hybrid 18* to try out this spring.

It is literally called the Dynacraft Driving Iron. There is only one model of it that I know of. Pics of my new ones posting now.

Here are the new ones I ordered and built yesterday with my kids. They like to help cut the shafts and spray the grip tape. I ordered a 18* and 21*, with x-stiff shafts that were on sale on hireko. My old one was a 21* with FST 115 stiff shaft.

IMG_0602.JPG

I used shorter ferrules to help them look a little understated.

IMG_0603.JPG

The shafts were Matrix hybrid shafts, right around 88 grams, and the grips were Lamkin z5 tour taper.

  • 1 month later...

I assembled a 21-degree Dynacraft driving iron about a month ago, I went with an Apollo aculite 95 steel shaft to match the weight of the rest of my irons, and so far I'm seeing pretty good results, it seems easier to hit than my 4 iron, and easier to work than my hybrids.

I gave this a try like a year ago to see if it was an option to replace my hybrid when it was windier or if I was playing a really tight course. Club was a little clicky sounding for me but it wasn't bad considering the price. I definitely should have gotten it with a heavy graphite shaft though instead of steel.
