I grew up in Monmouth County, NJ. About 90 minutes south of NYC on the NJ transit line. Our public courses were great. Hominy Hill is the crown jewel of parks system, but I was a big fan of Howell Park as well. Tamarack in Middlesex County has one pretty good course and one really good one. Just bear in mind that I haven't played any of these courses in 25 years...

Played hominy hill and charleston springs a good amount this past summer, the monmouth county system is great all around. Wish the metropolitan nyc area had something like it lol

Ditto on all the Monmouth county NJ courses but as a non county member your rates would be in the $75 range, try Trumps new course in ferry point during the week rates are $150 it's certainly worth it and views are spectacular.

That's a damn shame. I only played it a couple of times, but my grandfather wore that place out in his later years. He shot his age there a week before he passed away suddenly.

He wouldn't let us call the papers because he wasn't a Middlesex County resident, but his buddies behind the counter always gave him the resident rate.

There are so many quality public courses on Long island that it would be hard to list them. The further out on the island you go the more options there are.

Bethpage is the obvious, but Eisenhower park has a couple of nice courses too.

To me Suffolk County had some of the best.

West Sayville

Timber point

Spring Lake

Crab Meadow

Pine hills

Indian Island

Swan Lake

Rock Hill

Montauk Downs

Just a few of my favorites. The county courses are on the water and usually windy, but no better place to be on a hot summers day.

Good luck.

I am about ten minutes from Timber Point and used to play it three or four days a week when I first moved to NY.  Nice track and a great layout for the money, especially the Blue nine.

Blue is a special 9. White to blue was my favorite. I miss playing there. It's been many years though. I made eagle on the second hole of the white 2 days in a row once. I have fond memories of TP.
