Going up in flex or hard stepping

Recommended Posts

Debating since my fitting 3 years ago if my speed is now ready for stiffer iron shafts. Currently game KBS tour 120 S. I know hard stepping will save me some cash but also would require shaft extensions (On golf works it would run me close to $400 for new shafts if i reshaft my whole set and wedges and idk how trustworthy iron pulls are). I also know that hard stepping mostly affects feel and launch a little bit so it might not do much. If I get to that point, I may just need to sell my set and get new clubs with the stiffer shafts. If I do that with sub70, it would only cost $3-400 more than just new shafts. What have others done? Plus I got jealous seeing @JFish350 hit these amazing controlled shots.

Steel pulls are generally fine as long as the length is ok

It’s not going to affect things as much as you think especially if only hard stepping once.

your best bet is get fit and find what’s best instead of tinkering and not knowin

unless you have ballooning balls your shafts are still a good fit and controlled shots come from technique not the shaft you have

Thanks. I was thinking more from a dispersion standpoint. Sometimes i just feel consistency is down with my swing and a loose the head due to the softness of the shaft. could just be me.

Spin and launch aren’t going to change a lot exotically with only a single hard step.

iirc that’ only changes the flex by 1/3.

You lose the feeling of the head because the club is out of position in the swing. Could this be shaft related? Possible. The weight and feel of the club comes from the shaft. If those are off for your swing they could cause you to swing differently. Your coach should be able to see if your fighting your club or not. If so then a new solution in shafts could be a fix, but it didn’t necessarily mean going up in flex is the answer. And once you get away from the shaft your are using flex comparison goes out the door. If changing chaffs you want to look at weight and then the shaft profile
