Ted Bishop Out!

Recommended Posts

Well, I just saw where Ted Bishop, with only 2 months left in his presidency of the PGA of America, was removed from office for his "sexist" comments toward Ian Poulter.

I must say, that when you are the Front Man for an organization, large or small, you must refrain from making personal comments.

Besides, Ian's comments regarding Nick Faldo were a European PGA thing....the PGA of America should not be making comments against a player......any player on the Tour.

Of course we aren't privy to the inner workings of this thing but the punishment seems over harsh for a guy who has a good track record in promoting gender equity including working to keep the LPGA afloat.

Stupid comments but to be canned and to have his name expunged as ever having been president? That's harsh.

Interestingly us old guys are always telling our kids to be careful what the put on social media so it's remarkable to see one of us doing something so stupid. Perhaps he should have quickly and clearly apologized and stepped down himself and that might have saved his posterity.

I agree Rev, when I see the comments on FB, I wonder why people want to say such agregious things. I do not agree that Bishop should be expunged as he has done some wonderful things as PGA President.

I'm always afraid of what someone may post on my facebook wall so much so that I have a set of eyes that watches it for me and will warn me if something is there that shouldn't be.

I get particularly concerned about the political discourse on facebook.  I do have a number of international friends but they would never post anything political.  It's my own fellow citizens who seem to enjoy posting terrible things about elected officials, public servants and folks who are running for elected office.

While Bishop's comments were immature and unprofessional, his punishment may have been a little overdone for the comment that was made. I don't condone his actions, he shouldn't have said anything, but calling someone a "lil girl" and coming under fire that much, ridiculous. Plus the amount of PC regarding the comment is ridiculous as well.

Well, I mean, Poulter is a lil girl.  Have you seen some of the stuff that he posts on social media?

Let's face it - we live in a world where there are things that you can say and things that you can't and even that shifts based upon what you do.  It's like the seven forbidden words that couldn't be spoken on the air only now it shifts based upon position and current world events.

There are any number of older movies that I watch that are hysterical and yet there is no way you could make those movies today because of what's said.   But it's okay to make movies that could never have been made then normally because of what's done.

So Ian Poulter can basically say what he wants so long as he doesn't insult a sponsor or golf fans.

Leave out the "lil girl" reference and Bishop's remarks are still offensive to younger people.  I could say to a younger person that he or she might want to carefully consider the matter before saying something about a respected figure.  The last thing they would take from me is being chidded or scolded about insulting an Icon when they haven't really accomplished anything yet.  That's essentially what Bishop was saying there.

The PGA president has to stick to golf and golf only with the generic stuff on any other topic.

Hey it could be worse, he could be a politician, they aren't allowed to say anything. :)

I'm sure they've wanted him out for a while and this just gave them what they thought was a publicly good reason to end his tenure early. In all reality, with today's world/media the face of an organization has to be a poster child and he was offside on this one.

Is there a financial issue regarding cutting Bishop loose two months early?

Id contend that we live in a world where you can say whatever you want but theres consequences to whatever you say.  Unfortunately, it seems we increasingly are living in a world where people think they can say whatever they want, no matter how stupid or ignorant it may be and no one is allowed to get upset at them for it and no one is allowed to disagree with them.

This just reaffirms my belief that if I were a celebrity and especially if I were a professional athlete; no way would I be on social media.

Well I suppose we are coming at the issue from two sides but yes I'd agree with you, if you are a public figure anyone can say anything they want about you and there is very little that you may say to rebut it.  And yes were I an athlete I'd have my agent do all of my social media stuff for me but I'd insist that it be run by me first so that I knew what was going on.

Oh wait - I do that now - as a Pastor of a larger church I have to use Social Media - someone else does it but she runs it by me.  Even then we had a major gaff last week - I mean major - thanks You-tube and adios, so long, farewell, good bye.

Well first off certain people in certain positions need to take care of what and how they say things especially on social media. That is part of the things about taking a job of that statue. I personally believe in saying what you think period. LOL I think you folks know that about me after the other week. Yep in certain positions it requires you to use tact and keep your tongue in check. With all that being said I think Mr Bishop made an off the cuff statement that got blown out of proportion. And the PGA done a so called politically correct kneejerk reaction. I mean I have talked to a lot of people both male and female that were not offended. Have not heard but two females that were offended one lady is running for VP of the PGA this term and the other one was Paige Mackenzie of the GC. Yep the PGA went too far on this one

As far as I am concerned he does not owe any apology it was an off the cuff remark and Ian Poulter can bring that out IMHO Polter does not have any respect for anyone

Now here is where my comment may get me in trouble on social media ha ha I let my PGA membership lapse many years ago and I am glad I did because if I had not I would have now. Hope this does not go national media and get me kicked off of MGS!

As far as social media I don't and never have done the Facebook/Twitter thing I don't need anyone spying like that on me or saying things that are untrue etc. I guess the only social media I use is here on MGS or on Wrx.

I may not agree with your opinion but I will stand by you and fight to the death if needed for you to retain that right to express it.After all this is still a free country aint it?? And I do agree with you with on one twist if I were any kind of public figure period I would not be on the mainstream social media period. In fact I am a nobody and I aint on it

TEE Hee probably was since 500 dues paying members lost their jobs with Dick's a month or two ago. You know no job no money no dues paid. Such simple economics a redneck could figure it out LMAO :)

I have been in the golf business over 30 years and didn't hear about this until today.

More proof that the PGA is completely irrelevant. If the whole organization disbanded tomorrow no one would care, especially the tour players that cut those ties years ago.

Club Pros would live on. Tournament Players Championship would replace PGA as fourth major. Manufacturers would still have the Equipment show. And Ryder Cup may actually be fun again.

PGA road the wave of the golf industry and now that the curve is going the other way, people are shaking them off their coat tails. Dicks just happened to be the biggest.

I listened to Bishop tell his side of the story this morning on "Fairways of Life" with Matt Adams.....the more I listened, the more I came to realize that Ted Bishop put himself up on a pedestal and really thinks his S@#t does not stink.  He does claim responsibility for his actions, but his manner of being is so pompous that I suspect he may even end up losing his course in Indiana.

Actually you are very correct. The trend down here in the last couple of years has been for courses or management groups to hire golf directors and staff outside the PGA. IMHO the PGA is really interested in one thing and that is their pocketbook.

He did some good things, but his last big decision (Ryder Cup Captain) was not very good and his attitude was a bit of a deterrent to many in the organization. With the doom and gloom forecasts for the industry and the loss of many PGA positions in DSG, even the slightest public relations issue had to be met with a strong stance. With his tenure ending, it was much easier to simply end it early than to play PR catch up for two months. Since it is an unpaid position, there is no monetary commitment to him, so cutting ties is a "good" option.
