I'm very sorry to hear about your grandfather and agree with @Kenny B that he'd probably want you to be out there playing the game he loved and introduced you to. It's good to be out and you'll have the positive memories you made with him to last a lifetime.

Thank you and I definately will be out there more, I just had to have a little break for a bit but back at it and having fun!

Sorry to hear about your grandpa.  I know the feeling; my dad passed away last May at age 90, but he's been in rough shape since his stroke in 2015.  Being isolated for a year in his assisted living facility in Oregon during COVID didn't help one bit!

Hope you can get out for a little golf, especially now that it's warming up.  We all need a diversion from time to time from the daily grind.  And remember... your grandpa would not want you to give up the activity that he obviously loved so much.

Thank you, sorry to hear about your dad. I will definately be playing more.

  3. All very good advise and I will definately try to implement it all, I have been hiting plastic balls in my backyard and of course that seems like I am a dang pro 😂. I will be headed to the range Monday most likely and I might play tomorrow if I can find a babysitter for a few hours.

Too lazy to quote everyone sorry.

Been playing golf since I was about 10 years old. Played junior golf and some in college at what is now known Loyola University Maryland back in the 90s. Didn't play much once I got out of college - life, work, kids, living in cities like New York, DC and Baltimore made it hard to get out.

I'm a 2 handicap, so I can shoot at or around par on a good day, but typically mid to high 70s.

What I love about golf is summed up in this Arnold Palmer quote: "Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

I've been a reader of MyGolfSpy for years but never participated in the forums. Interested to hear what tournaments other good players are playing in, as well as get nerdy about equipment.

I live on Bainbridge Island near Seattle and I'm a member at Wing Point Country Club. It's funny how life is kind of full circle. I grew up in Wichita, KS on Tallgrass Country Club and was out there almost every day with the driving range and chipping green basically in my backyard and now I'm back in similar situation, living right on the course on Bainbridge.

The best thing about golf in the Pacific Northwest is that most of the courses have beautiful views and you can play year round. The worst thing are the trees are too tall! 🙂 It's rare you have an option to go over the trees, it's got to be through or around.

I'm a co-founder of a company I hope some of you have heard of, Spark Golf. We run 9-hole recreational, social golf leagues at public golf courses on weekday evenings. I'm a tech guy so I build the website and the mobile app. Would love to hear what you think if you've tried it out!

My user name is pjb3, which is what I try to use as my handle on all websites/apps. My full name is Paul John Barry III, so it's based on that.

    Welcome!

    Hey all!

    1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I've been playing for about a year now and my handicap is sitting at about ~20.

    2. What do you love about golf? I love the science behind the equipment and the swing. Also love the scenery that you can enjoy while on a great course.

    3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I've seen a lot of review sites and MGS seemed the least biased and it's been my go-to for reviews/release notes.

    4. Where are you from? What is your home course? I'm from WA and my home course is Harbour Pointe GC.

    5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best thing is the view but the worst thing is the unpredictable weather.

    6. What do you do for a living? I work in Marketing for big tech!

    7. How’d you pick your user name? Don't remember honestly. I just always used the same name.

    Welcome from another newbie!

I pull out the trusty old Swingyde training aid. Anytime my ball flight starts  getting crooked, I hit balls with that on my club and it straightens it back out. I developed such a nasty hook this year I hit balls with it before almost every round to stay on plane and in sync.

I will look into this as well

If you have other hobbies take a week or two to focus on them and come back to golf.  For me it’s motocross and it helps a lot  to flip flop so you dont stress out. This advise is only good if your not trying to go pro. 😂

I’ll never be pro but I am extremely obsessive with being good at my hobbies so I get frustrated easily.

Sorry to hear about the funk.  I blame it on the weather!

If you want a pro to look at your swing or for lessons, I recommend Mike Schoner the head pro at Sun Willows.  He was the assistant pro at Columbia Point until last year; really helped a friend of mine.

I agree with others that it is likely a tempo/rhythm issue.  There are fast tempos and slow tempos, but you have to get the rhythm correct for your tempo.

I'm certainly not a golf coach (and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night) but if you want another set of eyes on your swing I'd be happy to take a look.  I've had a lot of personal experience with the s#@nks!

I might take you up on that. Just having a rough few times out.

Yea. I’m the type of person that has a hard time moving on from bad shots to another club or leaving the range. It made it more fun and I had a better perception of how the session went itself. It’s hard enough to hit 1-2 good shots in a row so why am I trying to hit 15 good 7 irons lol grant it’s if you need to work in something certain more reps are better but you can still script out holes for the range session dr-6iron-58 or 4 iron-gw etc.

I definitely do the same thin, I totally get in my own head.

    sounds like the "Twistys"?

I usually just shorten the swing. I'll even play that way if I have to. Think punch shots. Very body connected. Less hands. My version of Tommy Fleetwood.

I'll give it a go next range session. Thanks!

A bit counter-intuitive and might be nerve racking, but when this happened to me last, I left the range and went on the course with no scorecard. I hyper focused on a target and just swung the club aggressively to the target..no finesse/feel shots. Sounds like you’re ball striking and fundamentals are sound, so it might be more in your head (too much technical thoughts?).

Yeah it's a real possibility, I might give this a go this weekend too. Thanks!

For me, when my swing is really bad, I try to focus on other things that are going well, to help boost my confidence. Maybe my short game is well, and it helps keep my scores reasonable. I think someone above mentioned hitting the range and getting all the bad shots out. I agree. A pro once told me that sometimes it's good to just hit balls and not care where they go. If you've been playing a while, and not doing a swing overhaul, then it's likely just a hiccup that happens and it'll likely run its course

    I am hoping so.

I like to think I can hit myself out of a funk. I need to get all the bad swings out. So I go to the range for an hour and let it all out. I video tape myself to see about consistency and inconsistencies. Take a look and see what needs to be modified or corrected. I’ve also found that simulating holes by going to the range is better for me at least. I’ll never be able to hit 10 great 7 irons in a row. But once warmed up I can throw together a good simulated hole session

I will try that out, sounds like it makes a range session more interesting too!

Happens man.  Do not despair, I went for a fitting for the Blueprints a few years ago, and shanked 8 of 20.  Talk about embarrassing.

I was recovering from a recent shoulder surgery, but I had high expectations and my game was/is not Hoseling the ball.

    Patience is key.

Thanks! Did you end up getting them?

Depends on what is causing it.  I get the shanks (the golf equivalent of the twisties) at least twice a year and this year was the first time I figured out why.  I come down too steep. So when it happens now I know what to do at the range, focus on shallowing out and slowing down.

Before I knew what the problem was, I'd just take 2 weeks away from golf.  Look at my clubs and say "screw you guys, I'm going home".   Come back and hopefully it fixes itself.

Sounds like me haha. Yeah I want to work through it instead of just stopping for a bit, then coming back and "oh well it magically dissappeared."
