How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I started playing golf when I was 4. My mom ran the junior golf program. My father was the President of Beacon Hill C.C. and my grandfather was the Club Champion. I have been playing for 34 years. My handicap floats between a 2-5 based off different times of the year. My scores are anywhere from -2 to +8. I would say I shoot 75 (+3) the most frequent at my home course.

What do you love about golf?
My grandfather/grandmother, mom/dad and sister all play. It was a family thing when I was a kid. Now I love the competition. I played high school and college golf. I still play in local and state tournaments. My nephews and niece just started playing. I love going to the range with them and teaching them. Golf has been a great way to spend time with family/friends and release my weekly stress.
What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I love testing new equipment and talking shop. I am obsessed with product reviews. I can not wait to try everything and anything.
Where are you from? What is your home course?
Red Bank, NJ. My home course is Hominy Hill G.C. in Colts Neck NJ. It has been ranked one of NJ's top 10 public courses for years. I learned to play golf at Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands from the ages of 4-18.
What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
NJ weather and also 5 hour rounds.

What do you do for a living?
School teacher. Been teaching 8th grade math for 12 years. I found a career that lets me play golf after 3pm daily and I have 2 months off in summer.

Played in the New Jersey Monmouth County 2 man team scramble event at Shark River Golf Course yesterday. My partner and I WON the even with a score of 61 (10 under par) Gross score. We started the day off on a par 5 with an Eagle and then I had a hole out eagle 7 holes later. I had 157 from the adjacent fairway. I hit a 7 iron high over the trees to a 1 hop in. One of the best tournament shots of my life. We only won by 1 stroke. Last year my partner and I came in 2nd with 6 under par. This is the best we have ever played together. We "hammed and egged" almost every hole.

I wouldn't call it silly, but I agree that a match should be decided by continuing play.
However tee times are limited, as is daylight.  If all the sudden you have several match's going extra holes it gets harder to finish on time.  I understand the need for scorecard playoffs.  If everyone knew the rules going in, and technically it is based off play since you are starting with the hardest hole and comparing cards, then I don't see any issue with it.
It sucks to lose that way, but I'm willing to bet if you had won that way instead we wouldn't have seen this post 🙂

Not silly. It’s somewhat common to go to the cards to determine a winner. As mentioned above there are limits that can affect things. Let’s say you run out of daylight and the match is tied. Not you have to play another day which takes away momentum either golfer had.
lets flip it around. If you won would you have posted asking if going to cards to decide a match is silly?

JoeyBananas got a reaction from Shrek74 in Do you still carry a 5-iron?
My bag changes constantly depending on course length and tightness of fairways. If the course is short I do not require a 5 iron b/c I usually tee off and have 8 iorn or less into greens. If a course is really tight, I like to carry as many irons as possible so I will ditch my hybrid and put all my irons in bag p-3. When I play a wide open longer course, I like to have Driver, 3wd, Hybrid, and Driving 3 iron in bag. I will pull my 5 iron out. I am very good at hitting knock down shots or power shots. So I can cut a 4 iron down or power up a 6 iron into the 5 iron gap.

I have had several tournaments over last couple week and another tournament on Wednesday. I have really good short game so I am confident I can always get the ball within 3-5 feet of any hole from greenside. I work on 3-6 foot putts for an hour each day. I place 4 balls around the cup and walk around making them. Always try and putt from a different angle. This helps me when I am sweating over a makeable putt. I have a very high percentage of up and downs every match. My goal is to make so many it just seems routine when I am on course. My grandfather always told me if you want to grove a shot you need to hit it 10,000 times so you don't think you just do.
