I play on a course with ball-eating trouble on every hole, so I usually play the best budget ball I can find. That has been the Wilson Zip for the last 2 seasons. Decent ball, nothing more, nothing less.
Just ordered the new Laddie Extreme balls made by Bridgestone, will try them over the weekend.
Have played SrixonZ stars, ProVs, B330s, Chrome softs, NXTs, and most recently the Volvik Vivid. Of these, the Vivid impressed me the most off the tee and around the green.
With all that being said, I will continue to play the budget balls until my budget and ball striking allow for the higher end options.

Ok, after the morning round fiasco I decided to have another go at my home club. There's another member who's about to go out for a quick round too so we joined up together.

He's quite a player, 2 handicap at 65 is very impressive. I've seen him all the time but never get a chance to play together. A true living prove that you don't need to be a long hitter to score some awesomeness. We both played from the white.

His drive is about 225ish which is not that much shorter than mine but quite deadly with his hybrid and fairway woods. Great touch around the greens. We had a good time chitchatting thru out. I told him about my morning round. Then we went on and try to match each other's shot for shot. I thought I know all the ways to approach each holes apparently I've much to learn.

I shot 70 to his 68. It's refreshing to play with "older" player and get my ass kick so brilliantly and enjoy it at the same time. Best day ever.

simple fix for this... single length clubs; ball position ends up in the same spot for all your irons!

I'd say that things like Ball Position and Grip are hugely important, way too important to rely on our advice - talk to your pro about it because there are a variety of theories and we're more likely to mess you up than help.

If I were playing with you or on the range with you and could see your issue I might be able to make an intelligent guess to help you out but just go see your pro - his will be intelligent and educated.

I've read through dozens of posts in this thread and want to thank you all for sharing. I am inspired by the scratch players and those breaking 90 or 100 for the first time. It's refreshing and makes me want to go play!

After taking a lesson Friday, I had an erratic weekend shooting 38-46-45 Saturday and 43-46-38 today. Struggled off the tee all weekend until the last 9 when a small change with ball position helped me find the fairways again. Best hole today, #5, 514yd par 5 been eating my lunch lately. Drive 314yd, 5 iron 200yd to center of green, 2 putt birdie. I wasn't trying to crush the drive, just wanted a smooth swing into the fairway. My avg drive is around 250, so you can imagine my surprise. Putter has been better than usual as well and it soothes the soul to finally see some putts drop from 10-15 feet (and a couple from 20-30 )! Here is the card from the last 9:

I broke 80 for the first time on Saturday morning. It was on a par 71 which is a a little * on the 79 but still it is a new personal best and feels amazing. I played at randall oaks golf course in west dundee, IL.

shot a 42 on the front with 1 birdie but the greens were in really great shape and It felt more like a 39 or 40 because I got so close to dropping several more putts on that front. I started the back off with a double after messing up the tee shot with my driver and 2 putting a very tough green and following up with another bogey when an 8 foot putt lipped out. I flipped the switch on 12 and mashed the driver down the middle, put a 50* wedge from 106 to 12 feet and poured int the putt for birdie. I parred out hitting all but one of the last 6 greens in regulation with another 3 putts that were extremely close to going in. I just wish 2 of those putts on the back 9 fell in so I could have shot even par over 9 holes. Looking back there were a few bad shots that easily could have saved me some strokes, but putting saved me as i had 6 one putt holes.

I couldnt believe how easy it felt to actually score like that, especially considering the front 9 was not that great.

Nice move. Sometimes you're better off just tossing the scorecard in the trash and enjoying the company you're with.

My wife and I played this morning and we were joined by a young single guy from Longview, WA.  He only played nine holes since he was driving back home in the afternoon.  Great kid!  Hit the ball far with really old clubs.  He said they were his dad's.  This was only his 3rd time playing this year and I think he shot somewhere around +6 for nine holes.

I played a lot better today than yesterday.  Not a great start though with a +6 on the front nine.  We chatted a lot with the kid, and I wasn't focusing very well.  Doubled #9.  The back nine was a lot better.  I birdied #11 and #13, so I was -2 after 4 holes on the back... without hitting a green in regulation!!  However, I promptly gave those shots back with a double on #14.  Had two more bogeys over the last 4 holes, so +2 for a score of 80.

I just had brain f@rts on two holes.  It could have been my best round this year.  Coulda, woulda, shoulda!!

I played a local city-owned course last weekend. It's a pretty nice course and fairly tough - a lot of very mature trees that can get in the way of even decent shots so you have to know where you want to land the ball, and it plays ~6300 from middle tees so a good distance for me. I shot 87 (+16). Front 9 I was getting off the tee very well but short game sucked, back nine was a bit more sporadic off the tee but short game came around - 2 sand saves and 3 straight 1-putts. Middle irons were not that great, at all.

Aside: I have been trying different GPS apps since I got a new phone a few months ago - I used 18 birdies and started playing around with using for stats instead of purely for GPS. Who else uses 18 birdies and how do you think it compares to other apps?

While testing the Ping i200s, I decided to channel my inner Bubba and picked up a sleeve of Volviks (the matte, pink balls) and discovered... that they play just as well as other urethane balls and they're crazy bright pink so I find them really fast! They play on par with the B330S that I used to game for both distance and control and not only do I never lose balls but my search time for balls in the rough is about a quarter of what it used to be. These things just pop. I recommend giving them a shot!
Bonus, they're a bit cheaper than ProV1s or B330s, about the same as the B330RXS

PS - The only issue I have with them is wear. Since I never lose these things, I really need to inspect the ball for wear. The matte finish also hides cuts and scuffs better than gloss so you have to keep an eye out.
